If you haven't discovered this site yet give it a try. There just might be some inspiration here. In an art quilt, you will want to go in your own direction but some basic ideas and jumping off points can be helpful.

Have you seen the Heat N Bond Iron on Vinyl? Missouri Star has a video using this product. I have a lot of antique hankies I want to use to make 2 quilts. I originally planned to use tulle to help protect the hankies. When I saw the video using the vinyl I decided this may be the best way to go, I've priced the product with ranges of $19.95, $11.95 and the cheapest at Hobby Lobby for $9.99, for the same size roll. It is washable, but I don't for see the quilts being washed a lot as they would be heirlooms. It comes in a roll 17"x 2 yards. You might want to check out the video.

I am so in awe of this piece. It is spectacular as your fabric choices are so perfect to make this collage dog almost alive. Others have commented about the beautiful eyes; I also think the tongue and teeth look so wonderful. As for using tulle or not I have no comment. But, I think any quilting should be around the features, not the individual patches using the finest thread your machine can handle-maybe even silk. Anxious to see the finished project.

You've done a fabulous job making him look so realistic! I don't have any ideas for the quilting of the dog, but a wood grain would look good for the background.

Darling! Love those fabric choices...my suggestion is the same as others...vertical stitching to emphasize the board effect. Maybe some stitching to look like fur...stitching going in the direction of how the fur would go. I don't think you'd need a lot, because the fabrics already suggest that. Have fun!

I agree with not quilting around the individual patches. I should have clarified that I was talking about free motion sewing around the individual patches before the quilt is sandwiched. That has worked for me in the past when I didn’t want to put tulle on the surface to hold the loose edges as I quilted. I do not use a stabilizer under my piece at this step since the collaged pieces are on fabric which acts as the stabilizer.
