You don't actually have to pin the pieces on the seam line. You can place the pin about 1/2" below and parallel to the edge of the pieces. If you use the flathead pins, your machine will roll right over them without your needle ever hitting a pin.

I pin everything. As my pieces go through they seem to get a little off kilter towards the end if I don't pin. Maybe using a stiletto or something like that would help though...

Very rarely, only on the most complicated blocks, I do pinless curved piecing and love it.

Yes -- pinning makes me feel more comfortable. It always makes me more accurate.

I've been sewing for years and quilting for years too. I just always pin. I hate ripping stitches and it seems if I don't pin, I just have to rip. I just keep pinning.

I pin as little as possible, only when I feel I need to match a seam. I use my stiletto a lot.

If I have seams to butt up, I will pin them. It is easier than unsewing it they don't match up later.

It depends on the block that I am working on as well as the size of the pieces being sewn together.
