I was sewing a month ago and the smoke alarms went off. I could not figure out what was going on but then I started to smell my iron (a 10 year old Rowenta). It never leaked and I liked the weight and the amount of heat. I had bought a Black & Decker from Target when I read an earlier post about the Rowenta so I had a replacement handy. I am not real happy with it -- if I put water in it the water spits all over so I have to use it dry and the temp does not seem as steady but I am keeping an open mind. My irons have always been on surge protectors since I don't want to put all the wear and tear on the plug.

DH says no more Rowentas.

I have a Rowenta that I do not use. Mine leaked and I contacted the company with no relief. I was really out of sorts with them because of the price tag on it. I decided to keep it as a reminder that not all high end items are worth the bother. Good luck getting any reply or any compensation for yours. I also have a pair of scissors that my DH paid over $100 for that sit on the same shelf with the Rowenta. I believe there are posts on most all the quilting blogs about the fire danger with these irons.

My travel Rowenta iron caught on fire. Luckily, it happened while I was in the room sewing.

Maybe you mean a Reliable? I have a Reliable Digital Velocity iron, my friend Cindi has one and she loves it so much she sent me one as a gift. It is, hands down, the best iron I have ever owned. You could run a train off the high steam setting, lol.

WOW! I'm glad you caught it before something really bad happened! I should consider my self lucky, my Rowenta was leaking all over the place and suddenly just stopped working altogether. Throw it out and will never but a Rowenta again. I purchased a panasonic cordless iron and I love it so far so good! It doesn't have the steam like the Rowenta but for all the stop and go ironing I do in quilting it's great! The big plus is not having a cord to get tangled up in!!!!!!

You are the only other person I have ever seen that has a Tfal. I have had 2 both are still working just fine. My first one my daughter has because her cat knocked it off my ironing board and the point got messed up. I bought another when I moved. I love it, works well, doesn't leak as long as I let it heat up enough, has a auto turn off , although it is plugged into a strip that gets turned off went I leave the room . I have never had any problems with it and would buy another in a heartbeat.

I bought a GE back in 1976 (the year I got married) and I'm still using that very same iron! It was a bit heavy, but it has never leaked or had it's own mind to catch fire! There have been far too many negative Rowenta reports here and loads more on Google. I will NEVER own one. Be safe everyone, no matter what, ALWAYS unplug your iron when you are done with it.

I have owned a couple of Rowenta irons in the past. None have caught fire (thank you Lord) but the have spit and leaked. QVC had a Rowenta for a Todays Special Value, so I ordered one. So far so good; however, after reading about all the fire and overheating problems, I may chunk it and buy a Shark. Seems you ladies are pleased with them.

Anytime an appliance has a safety issue, it should be reported to the manufacturer and the consumer safety counsel and I think also consumer reports.

My first Rowenta work great for about 2 months. It was over $100. It started steaming so heavy no matter what the setting I had to wipe up puddles under my ironing board. I took it back to Bed BAth and Beyond. The manager gave me the next better model iron fro no more money. When it was about 1 1/2 years old it started leaking like crazy and smelling hot. I quit using it because of the leaking and smell. I emailed Rowenta and they wouldn't do anything. They just told me it was out of warranty and I was SOL. I even contacted a supposed manager same response. I will never, ever buy another Rowenta iron as long as I live. I wouldn't even take one for free. I would be afraid to use it.
