Sooooo I have a dream.
My DH also has this dream Open a fabric/quilt shop. Needs a name. I have a few ideas, have had help already with a few more, but would like other thoughts. You have gotten to know me a little bit on this board (most of you have). So keep what you know about me in mind. I want ideas on a name only. I've been in businesses before and know the risks. This is not a 100% deal yet, as we are in the beginning stages. And it may not happen. God is in control and so far He hasn't erased it from our minds, so.... Here are the clues to assist your thoughts: 1) It will be in TN, in the country vs a down town location 2) It will be more than just fabrics and quilts (just don't know yet what all will be included - I'm creative remember? 3) I also plan to have a web site 4) IF we use a name suggested here and IF we actually get to open a business/store I will acknowledge the person who suggested it. 5) My real first name is Phyllis Remember this is for name ideas only. Thanks |
I had a boss once that said you should always name a business with the main 'thing' that you would be doing. So in this case, would you start with "Quilt....????" You did say that you would be having other things, so not sure if that advice would work. I am thinking......

The name must include the word 'fabric'. Oh please. It is so hard to find suppliers in so many areas. The internet will be a big calling card for you and searches will get your hit with the word 'fabric'.
My suggestion is: Quilting Grannie's Fabric and Quilt Shop. I will concede my recognition to topper1. ............ I am on my edit time now. I thought of an execellent idea!!!!!!!!!!!! A bed & breakfast along with your quilt shop!!!!!!!!!! Think of the retreats you'd pull in. Oh my goodness!!!!!!!!!! |

Grannie's Quilting & Treasures
Grannie's Quilting, Fabric & Treasures this way when you set up a website, when others are searching for quilting or fabric can find you I think a cute logo would be a cute treasure chest full of quilts inside and hanging out of it, rocking chair, some other cool antiques Have fun and let us know what you decide. You will have a blast! I hope you will offer classes and retreats. We need places for retreats!!!! |

I'm thinking about your board name: The Quilting Granny
or Granny's Quilting & Treasures. Oh didn't read last post, someone though of that. |
Make sure to have the word "quilt" or "quilting" in the name - so if someone is using a locator (Garmin or whatever) one can find it if one doesn't remember the exact name.

Some things to think about:
It is much more difficult to obtain the domain name you want than it is to obtain the business name you want. You are in competition with the entire dot com world for a domain name and just the state of TN for the business name. If you want to have your URL reflect your business name, register that one first. It is possible to check for availability of domain names, but it is not a smart thing to do until you are actually ready to register it. The mere search for a specific name, either via a registrar or even by Googling it, can spark someone else to register it and then try to sell it back to you at a much inflated price. Also, your business name should reflect your "brand", the image you want to portray to the buying public of who you are and what you do. Decide what you want that image to be and who you want to draw to the business. Innovative? Exciting? Friendly? Helpful? Unique? Old Fashioned? What do you want the first reaction to be when someone hears the name or walks in the store for the first time? And don't forget easy to spell...like how many ways has your name been spelled so far in this thread?? You can set tags with most of the search engines so that you do not have to have 'fabric' or 'quilt' in your name to be included in a search for fabrics or quilts.. One more thing to remember...pretty much everyone with internet access has the ability to read this message board and the names suggested for your business. You should probably think twice about announcing what it is going to be called until after you have registered both the domain name and the business name, but that's strictly my own personal opinion. Sorry, didn't mean to run on so much. All the best on your journey. |

not to sound negative but Grannie's makes it sound like it's only for old people. I like "sew much more"

Wow so many good names, there a quiet a few that I like. Best of luck to you. Would love to have my own quilt shop one day, but is not very likely to happen.
|
Whoever posted about the domain name is correct. Had the problem naming my clinic.
There are many many cute names out there that the domain names are already gone for that reason I would put Phyllis in the name. OTOW, if you want to sell it later you would want the name to be more generic. I will dream on it. |
I toiled w/lots of name when I was starting my home based sewing business (I'd never register this online), but Sheila's Sewing X-Cetera it is. I live in a very rural part of NE Ala where lots of folks look at my window decal & might ask, what does that mean??? I just wanted to throw the et cetera off because etc they'd really have a time with. The X would throw the Internet right into the Porn sections, so I don't wanna go there.
Phyliss' Quilting & More. I know you want something catchy, so I'll be watching to see what you finally decide on. Good Luck! I'll be praying God answers your prayers for your & DH's dreams soon. |

Since there is already a Tennessee Quilts in Jonesborough, I would vote for 'Tennessee Backroads Quilting and Crafts' or just 'Backroads Quilting and Crafts'. Or to somehow include 'Jonesborough' in the name because everybody within a couple of hundred miles knows where Jonesborough is. Such as 'Jonesborough's Country Quilting'.
|
Thank you all for your input. I've been watching off and on throughout the day.
Keep them coming. I've found a few 'interesting' but not usable, Tennessee Quilts is already an established store (not mine) I will let you all know what the name will be after I have chosen it and after we have it established as a business. I don't want to publish it here before I take that step in case it gets stolen. You all are great! Thanks Keep 'em coming. |
Kuntry Bumpkin Stitchin Stuff
or maybe just Stitchin Stuff |
When I worked at a quilt shop ladies were always worried about hiding the receipts and the bags so hubby's didn't notice their spending habits. We always laughed that if we ever opened our own shop we would call it something like "Phyl's Hardware" That way the bank statements would look like you were spending all your time at the Hardware!
|
don't know if this has been suggested but what popped in my mind is "STITCH IN THE DITCH" seeing how you will be quilting in the country. You will have to keep us up on the news and if you don't mind I will keep you in my prayers that God will be there every step of the way holding your hand guiding you.you could also add quilt shop or fabric shop to the end of it. or if you are in a bad mood you could always go with stitch'n witch. j/k
