New survey....to quilt or cook?
Sitting here sewing, wondering what I'm fixing for lunch. So I wondered, would you rather quilt or cook? LOL....silly question, right?
Not so silly. Once I get into my sewing room I can forget what time it is and actually forget to eat. Since I have diabetes that is a problem. And if you look at me you would never believe that I would have that problem but it is so much more engrossing for me to sew than to cook.
So I do try to plan meals in the morning so it is not a surprise later. And my husband would give me grief saying that I was always thinking about food. Well, someone has to give some thought about it because I was responsible for feeding the family and preparing the meals. That is not something you can always do at 5pm if you want to eat by 6. Also, if I don't eat at a fairly regular intervals I am shaking and disoriented. |
Well, I would rather quilt than cook. No contest. :) But since no one else here does the cooking, I just do both. :)

I think I woud rather BAKE than QUILT only because I am a much better baker than I am quilter at this point :D

Much rather quilt than cook. :)
If I'm blessed enough to have time to quilt, quilting trumps cooking every time. I live alone now except for the cats. I'm good with a bowl of cereal. The cats do interrupt my quilting to let me know it's past their dinner time!
Well, given a choice, it would be quilt, but, I am in another slump re: the quilting. I know it comes and goes for me and I just go with the flow. No amount of rearranging my things, reading patterns, looking at pictures, etc. does it for me. It's just time goes by and I get interested again. The cooking, though, I'm really tired of. Especially the day to day evening meal, which is all I feel compelled to produce. It is just me and Mr. Stitchnripper, and bless his heart, he is always appreciative of anything I do. It is usually very simple - chicken on the George Foreman, a bag of veggies, and maybe a salad or rice. Something on that simple order. And I'm tired of that. I told Mr. S. that when he retires I am quitting making that evening meal.
I work 3 jobs, so "They Guys" do the cooking. Sometimes I get to cook on Sundays, and we all get a nice meal for a change. LOL! But I'd rather be sewing.

I rarely stop to cook if I'm in a quilting mood. DH is an adult that can feed himself if he gets hungry. I'm not that wifey.
I headed to the grocery shortly for some ground beef and sausage. Going to make meatballs and stick in crockpot. Keep them warm and will do spaghetti and meatballs for supper. Big batch and easy recipes. Then I just reheat or freeze. Will do that. Got recipe for chicken pot pie. I precooked chicken and froze for that. Got T-bones on sale the other week. Nice ones. Pull one out of freezer in morning yesterday, threw couple taters in nuke and that was it. Have gotten to where I do simple make ahead and DH loves to throw things together. works for just the 2 of us. Love if I don't have to stand over it constantly. would rather sew. but like to eat too well.
I'd rather quilt, unless chocolate is involved.
After Cooking for about 55 years I am getting tired of it. I try to cook on the weekends for suppers and lunches. My Husband in the last 10-15 years cooks Breakfast. I prefer my cooking over anyone else's. Not big on restaurant food either. Eating cereal or PB sandwiches some evenings is good enough for us.
I sew every evening and on weekends. |
I have a rabbit holding a chalkboard in my kitchen that can be written on. For the longest time it said "On strike!"; well that didn't work so now it says "Quilt More Cook Less"
Cook...if someone else is cleaning up. Since no one else is cleaning up, I'll quilt
Quilting trumps cooking each and every time. I don't even have a stove in my kitchen (what a waste of space just to occasionally boil water). We use the microwave and the toaster oven and an electric kettle when I feel the need to boil water.
I'm so lucky! If I do not feel like cooking, Jim will do it. I like both, but quilting lasts longer.
Oh, I love to eat, so i must cook once in awhile, but would really rather quilt. Winter is hard, ready for fresh veggies from the garden, and we can grill outside without freezing our buns, ha.

Sometimes I would rather quilt other times, cook. If I get involved in quilting and don't pay attention to time, DH does the cooking without me having to say anything. He cooks others times too. We both cook and clean up. Remember, this is after almost 46 years of training!!!!
Oh tough question when my 'quilt room' is in a corner of the kitchen and the machine and fabric is there waiting for me...
If I put something on the stove to boil I can wander over and do a little piecing or cutting...I like to cook but hard to concentrate on it when I can walk across the room and be quilting !!! Of course, cooking relates to meals, of which I eat 2 breakfasts and maybe five suppers in a week. So that's only 7 cooking events which don't take more than an hour of actual work-time at most. That leaves all the reast of the evening and weekend for quilting :) |
I'm sick of cooking, having to come up with something different every dang day... Daughter-single, 29 and lives in her own house down the road but still eats dinner with us. I want to know what the empty nest feeling is like? I know I'm retired and they think I have all day to do supper but all I want to do is sit at my sewing machine, work on my design wall with scrapes of fabric and quilt. I'm FAT and don't want to eat a meal every night...Husband thinks if it's not meat, taters and veg. with cornbread it's not a meal. Just wondering how I did it when I was working graveyard for 20 years. Oh I know; I didn't sew and sleep all day while he was at work and she was in school. Guess ya'll realized this has hit a nerve I didn't realize I had hidden in the back of my mind...God help them when they get home tonight. May have a "Come To Jesus Meeting" with them about this issue. I need at least two nights off a week from doing supper. Thanks for letting me vent, what friends are for!
I like quilting and sewing other things also. I don't like to cook anymore but I still do some. DH makes me breakfast if we don't have oatmeal or cereal. I would stay in my sewing room forever.
I never cook.
I'd much rather quilt than cook. Since I do have to cook, I often cook large batches and freeze them so that daily cooking is not so time consuming. Also, since my sewing room is near the kitchen, if I have something in the oven, I take a timer with me and sew. It is amazing what I can accomplish in small segments of time.
Ok I'm totally spoiled. My husband took over the cooking and shopping about 8 years ago. He loves to cook and wants to do the shopping. I'm up early in the morning and clean up all the dishes from the day before. He's not economical with his use of pots but I'm NOT complaining. He even leaves me meals when he travels.
Leaves me more time for quilting. Yeah. |
quilt wins with me
I am Mexican but not a typical Mexican so DH will make his own breakfast if I have not prepared anything. I do cook a big pot of pinto beans and he or I will fix some every day..I try to prepare dinner 3 to 4 times a week and we will pick up something on Sundays.
I would rather be Sewing or gardening...i don't even like house cleaning...I just maintain and hire a house cleaning service several times a year..My dear mother would be ashamed. |

I'm very, very, very lucky. When DH retired, he took over cooking our meals! I still do The Biggies like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and we work together whenever we have a dinner party. Heather Elaine: your DD needs to learn how to cook and take care of herself. Under the guise of "teaching her how to cook" have her practice cooking at least every other night. As for your DH, maybe he needs to learn to cook as well. If you can afford it, make plans to go away to one of the four day quilt shows and leave them on their own. I guarantee they won't starve while you are gone, and ~I hope~ will appreciate you all the more when you get home. Lastly, VENT ALL YOU WANT: we're here for you. |
I wish I had never got this darned cooking thing started. I should have played dumb with both husbands and said I couldn't cook but noooo, I had to open my big mouth!
I'm spoiled. My husband loves to cook and is an excellent cook. He will bring my lunch to me while I'm sitting at my sewing machine. I haven't cooked in years and feel quite lucky.
no contest, never interested in cooking even though I can do several dishes well, one which I haven't made in over 2 years do to how much work it is.

My wonderful mother-in-law cooked a meal with meat, 2 vegetables, and cornbread every day because father-in-law refused to eat leftovers. When he passed away, she put one of the potted plants from the funeral on the stove and said it was closed for business! Thank goodness her son is a good cook and eats leftovers many nights.
I live alone would rather quilt and go out for a carvary at least 3 times a week . And no washing up.
Quilting wins of course but I do like to cook as well.
Once I get in my sewing room I completely lose track of time so I use my crock pot a lot. Dinner gets all made in the morning and then I can sew until the dog comes to tell me that its time to eat. |
I love to cook but am required to do so much of it owning a specialty food market in which we serve homemade soups, sandwiches and pastries... and I rarely get time on my sewing machine so I would rather quilt!
I like to cook but I love to quilt. I sew everyday unless I have places I need to go. I'm pretty lucky though because DH will eat most anything. He is not picky so it makes meals easy when I don't feel like cooking. Also he always cooks his own breakfast
Depends upon the day. I find both quilting and cooking to be stress relievers for me. Sometimes I find a quilt needs to hang on my wall for awhile for me to contemplate the next step and to see it in daylight and nightlight. I will then turn to cooking. I do get bored with cooking, but internet helps inspire me. I have been using pintrest for inspiration- started looking at quilts, but now look for recipes too. Unfortunately the pictures sometime look better than how they taste!
