New Year's Weekend Virtual Quilting

As requested, today starts the New Year's virtual quilting weekend. I plan to continue working on what I was working on the last VQW--BOMs and finishing quilt tops. After that weekend, I took about ten days off from quilting and would like to finish several things before the start of 2018. I plan to start a Swoon quilt the end of next week and don't want to feel guilty when I do :) ..

What are You working on this weekend? Are you getting an early start on next year's Christmas presents? Or maybe finishing some for this year??? Cleaning and organizing the sewing studio to start the new year off right? Shopping pre-inventory sales to save money and restock? Or planning what you want to work on in the new year? Whatever you're working on, please share with us. Pictures are welcome too.

The next regularly scheduled VQW is January 19-21, 2018.

rvsfan 12-29-2017 05:32 AM

What is a Swoon quilt? I will be sandwiching 5 small wall hangings and practicing my FMQ feathers.

Cheesehead 12-29-2017 05:42 AM

I will be busy working on my Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt units and getting my fabric prepped for the next Boom swap. Also need to finish up my blocks for the Churn Dash swap, I have lots to keep me busy over the long weekend!

i'll be making more quilts for the cancer center. i've got a top in the works right now.

SusieQOH 12-29-2017 06:17 AM

I'll be sandwiching a Christmas quilt and hopefully start quilting it. It's almost ready to do!

anne2016 12-29-2017 06:19 AM

rvsfan....here is a link to Swoon pattern.

Starting tomorrow morning, I will try to get some block units joined for my Drunkard's Path
quilt.

tucsonquilter 12-29-2017 06:23 AM

Continue working on Bonnie Hunter's MQ and reorganizing my sewing room....maybe.....it sure needs it. lol

Boston1954 12-29-2017 06:23 AM

I'm glad you mentioned next Christmas, because that is precisely what I am doing. I've started two Boxed Squares. One is for Jim for next December, and the top is already close to done. (the blocks were finished and sat as UFO's for a couple of years). LOL I almost feel like I'm cheating. :)

Macybaby 12-29-2017 06:26 AM

I'll be working on the BH mystery (almost caught up) and binding quilts. I may do more LA'ing as I've put backings together with most of the tops I had waiting. Not sure though, as it's going to be subzero for highs and I have to go outside to get to the LA.

cherrybsixty 12-29-2017 07:24 AM

Last week I had told myself that this would be a good way to start off 2018, and now here it is. I am not prepared to start but will try to put away what I am caught up in. A good adolescent novel and can't tear myself away. I did make a list last week on what I want to try to accomplish for this weekend. Ok, I think that I will read for a little while longer and then start to piece later on in the afternoon. May come back with a pix or two. Happy New Years to everyone and happy sewing.

thimblebug6000 12-29-2017 07:41 AM

I am finishing the binding on a baby quilt, hopefully this afternoon. I have started SID on my large peacock quilt.... "and" I signed up for the Introduction to FMQ on String & Story site for the 30th (will be rushing around as it is also my walking group day) " and" haha.... I am also going to do the NYD mystery quilt on Merry Mayhem site... and now my Sis has invited us for lunch on NYD so it will also be a rushing around day..... whew.... I'm tired just reading about my plans! :D

Look forward to seeing and hearing about what everyone is working on.

meyert 12-29-2017 07:55 AM

I started sewing on a double wedding ring this week.... and that's what I will be working on. So many little pieces :) I think if I can get the arcs - 416 of these :shock: - done this weekend then I will start to feel like I am making headway (I hope anyway)

soccertxi 12-29-2017 08:32 AM

I too am a Bonnie mystery solver! I had such big plans..just finishing up Clue 3. So this weekend is cutting and cutting and cutting...and sewing! (one of the things that sidetracked me was our DD having an emergency appendectomy! THAT was not much fun for anyone involved! She is well and will fly home with her DH this afternoon. )

Kitsie 12-29-2017 08:38 AM

I will be finishing the borders on the Red Hot quilt I'm making for a friend and sewing buttons on a sweater! Happy New Year everyone! :D

happylab 12-29-2017 09:03 AM

I will be working on: 1) BHMQ, trying to catch up. I have 4 days. I have 4 steps to complete. In between that, I want to (2) pin my temp quilt for 6 months, sew them later next week. (3) Bind a purple tree skirt I was given 2 years ago and give it away. This will be my 3rd UFO this month. (5) Stitch a 40" kids top for donation, blocks are cut just need to be sewn together. I want done by 5th January to give away at guild Quilting Bee. lastly (6) Take apart last years BHMQ, remove yellow blocks for 1/2 square purple/white blocks. Sew the individual blocks together. What I don't get done this weekend, I will complete on the next VQW, later this month. I'll check in later. Happy sewing everyone.

For what ever reason - I suddenly remembered one of my Mom's UFO's that I could get to the floppy stage. From her notes, I think she was making this for her Mother, but it got set aside when she stopped quilting after Dad retired (he wanted to travel so she switched to crochet). So it's been in UFO stage for about 40 years. It's a flower basket quilt. There are another 20 blocks, but I think I'll put them together separately for another lap quilt to give to a sibling that Mom never got around to making a quilt for. She never made one for me either, so I'm going to keep this one.

There is enough sashing fabric to use for binding, so that is a bonus.

This will be the third of Mom's UFO's I've completed. Still have several more and I pull them out and work on them when the mood strikes.

I’ll do my best to clean up a little table where I stack UFOs & planned projects. It’s not real full so I can probably make a difference and then I don’t have them staring me in the face. There’s always cooking to do and DH may have a plan or two for me. We try to fit in a walk in the Mall for exercise. Friday is “clean day” and after 50+ years, he helps now so I get more done besides housework. Before Spring, I want to clear out the sewing room so I can clean and reorganize then start in anew.

the top is complete, an original design. started with 42 HSTs, which made only 10.5 pinwheels. so the odd two made two hourglass blocks that were built out to the 10" blocks that the pinwheels made.

what a great quilt and terrific that you can finish it for her

Macybaby 12-29-2017 12:36 PM

I'm back from shopping with no plans to head out again until Tuesday. I wanted to take advantage of the 30% off everything at the local fabric shop and picked up backing for three quilts - and several yards of fabric that caught my eye.

Now to get some serious sewing done!

NZquilter 12-29-2017 12:53 PM

I told my DH that all I want to do this weekend is sew :). He wants to play video games, so we will be simply relaxing in our ways. I'll be working on the Bonnie Hunter MQ.

Cathy, so nice that you have some of your mom's ufos. I love the old style quilts and hers is lovely. It just goes to show that we don't need to finish all our projects:D. Guilt complex ereased!

charlottemarie 12-29-2017 01:00 PM

Thanks for the link. That will make a pretty quilt.

Jingle 12-29-2017 01:24 PM

I am working on my third quilt for foster kids. First of Dec. we had to turn them in, I made 36 or 37 quilts for 2017.

I'm in, but not sure about posting much. At the cabin in Wisconsin, and only have kindle fire with. Working on a table runner for DH'S cousin. Will check in when possible everyone have a safe weekend and happy New Year.

barny 12-29-2017 02:12 PM

Wow! Jingle, that is a wonderful thing you are doing.

beckyw 12-29-2017 02:30 PM

I cleaned my sewing room and my sewing machine this week. So I'm all ready to start all over with some projects, Made three quilts for Christmas. I have two birthdays in January and a baby coming for a friends daughter. So I need to get a baby quilt and two twin quilts done this next month. The weather here is really cold this weekend. So I will be working in my sewing room. Happy sewing everyone!

Raggiemom 12-29-2017 02:39 PM

Cathy, that is so cool that you have your mom's UFOs!

I hope all of you Bonnie Hunter mystery quilters are enjoying the mystery :)

I finished two Kids Komforts quilts today and have a Lone Star quilt almost quilted. I have a couple quilt backs to be pieced then I can quilt a couple more. My husband had me take a couple breaks today to make some chocolate fudge and a chicken n dumpling soup. He enjoyed both. So far it's a productive start to the weekend.

Would love to see pictures as you progress on this quilt. A double wedding ring is on my list of things to do.

I cut the triangles for clue 6 of that famous mystery quilt LOL! While babysitting at my son's home so no sewing today. I also want to work on our guild January block for swap and an orphan project for our guild boutique.

tscweaves 12-29-2017 03:41 PM

I will be working on today's clue for BH mystery. A friend is coming over tomorrow to play on my serger & treadle, so that will be fun. I also am hoping to get my guest room curtains made from the fabric I finished weaving today. Not too much actual quilting will be going on but a lot of sewing related activity. I also want to give my latest Singer 99k a spa treatment.

Sync 12-29-2017 04:33 PM

I'm in ......... :D Put me in with the group that is working on Bonnie's mystery quilt. Clue 6 came out today and I'm still working on clue 4 & 5.

sewingsuz 12-29-2017 04:46 PM

I have had a Bonnie Hunter scrappy quilt ready for spray basting back and batting and top so then I can decide how to quilt. This has been waiting since last May. Happy new year to all of you.

Battle Axe 12-29-2017 04:55 PM

Count me in. I have all the instructions printed out for BHMQ, but maybe 10-15% of each clue done. I've got 12 UFOs on the list. Everytime I open a drawer, I find another one. Only got one done.

I ordered a three pack of a sorting box for all my patterns. Maybe I can organize them and get foot hold in the new year. The only other thing that is organized is my collection of Australian Patchwork magazines.

Hats off to tscweaves for keeping the weaving craft alive. I'm still using all the hand towels that I made for an order that was never picked up. They were yellow, so now I have a yellow kitchen.

retiredteacher09 12-29-2017 05:09 PM

I'm in. I plan to stay home until Monday morning as it's going to be below zero for highs and windy at least through Sunday.

1. Bonnie Hunter mystery clues 5 & 6

2. Iron, measure, and sort more blue scraps in general sizes- less than 2" and 2-10" and a bigger than 11" bags. I get smaller pieces of fabric (generally 2" - 8" width) from 2 groups where I volunteer. I have been putting them in bins and rummaging around to find sizes I want to use. Needless to say, the scraps are super wrinkled and some are tangled! So my goal is to get through the blue bin scraps by the end of January.

3. Finish the remaining blocks in my Amy Gibson book

4. Try to find a remedy to alleviate my off and on sore throat----Uggg!

Happy sewing everyone and, for those of you dealing with the elements of weather, stay warm and safe.

Connie

I'm going to sandwich a patriotic quilt I completed today so I can take to quilter next week; work on my swap blocks for Summertime swap; and cut out my next quilt...hopefully, if time, I'm going to get myself organized to begin a Baltimore album quilt...my big project for 2018

Krisb 12-29-2017 05:46 PM

Cut out the triangles for clue 6 of the BHMQ, or about 1/3 of them, out of fabric, went to Dunedein, bought 1/2 yard, plus 1/2 yard of two more neutrals because I am tired of some of the ones I am using, came home, cut the redt of the triangles, sewed 1/2 of them. Will finish the rest tomorrow, then press and trim units 5 and 6. Maybe finish quilting and binding a wall hanging. Maybe sandwich a quilt for DH. Depends on how much football interferes.

IrishNY 12-29-2017 06:02 PM

I'll be working on the BHMQ. I'm way behind (about 25% of Clue 2 done) and Clue 6 came out today. Also making place mats for my daughter. I'm hoping to get them pieced and quilted before Tuesday. I'd like to not leave the house until then. :-)

rryder 12-29-2017 06:42 PM

I’m in. Today I finished 1/2 of Clue 6 for BH mystery. Tomorow am we have brunch with DSS, DDIL and both granddaughters who are home from college, then will finish Clue 6 and catch up on my temperature quilt. Happy New Year everyone!

Kelly_Y 12-29-2017 06:58 PM

Having just finished a massive project just in time for Christmas, it's time to look at some of the loose blocks I've made and work out what to do with them. Maybe I'll start something for my bed, maybe more charity quilts.

My clue #6 is finished, that was one of my goals for today. My curtain yardage is tumbling in the dryer right now, so I hope to get that cut into 4 panels and start sewing in the morning.
