Hi Everyone! I was reading a newsletter from one of my LQS and they mentioned that they and many shop members were participating in "The Nine Patch Project". Hmmm... well my curiosity was piqued so I went to the Facebook link they provided and to check it out.

Here's the deal, you make 1 nine patch block any size each day using fabrics from your stash. This particular project is running June 1 to August 1. They are posting pics of their blocks on that Facebook page. What a fun casual summer sewing project.

I was going to join in and play catch up BUT then I said to myself, "self, we could do this on the board and everyone could have fun with it. Nine patch is easy and all levels of quilters here can participate." So what do y'all think?

Here are the links so you can read about it. The blog that started it is-
http://www.karensayssew.blogspot.com/

The entries that refer to the project are May 4th and June 1.

The Facebook page is-
http://www.facebook.com/pages/9-Patc...16885848345468

I thought we could start ours June 15th and run thru August 15th so no one has to catch up. You can do them anyway you want 1 a day, the week's worth in a day, whatever you want, it's a no pressure thing the goal is to have 1 for each calendar day.

Ok, so who wants to play?

amma 06-08-2010 05:39 AM

This sounds like a fun project... I will try to keep up with it :D:D:D

ScrapQuilter 06-08-2010 06:05 AM

Terryl 06-08-2010 06:12 AM

What size block? Do we make this a swap after we're finished?

Swan Song 06-08-2010 06:17 AM

No it's not a swap. Just an easy way to make a quilt. a couple wall quilts, table runners, whatever. You pick the size you want to work with. I am thinking when I am done it will be a Christmas present or presents.

Terryl 06-08-2010 06:21 AM

Okay, I'm in.

sewcrafty 06-08-2010 06:33 AM

I'm in!!!! Sounds like fun. I have 2 quilts for Christmas and this could possibly help me out!!!!

Maybe you should contact one of the Moderators and request that this be posted in the other area as well. Like the BOM, etc.

aliaslaceygreen 06-08-2010 06:41 AM

Sure, why not!!!! I'm in...and off today...and then I won't have to work on any of the projects I've already started, I can start a new one!!!!! Whoo HOO!

Swan Song 06-08-2010 06:46 AM

I was not sure exactly where to post this. If a Moderator thinks it should be in a different place I can repost.

JudyG 06-08-2010 06:48 AM

Count me in. I think I'll use up some of my Christmas fabric. Sounds like fun.

Dragonfly Nana 06-08-2010 07:13 AM

I will go stash shopping tonight to see what I have to play with!
Thanks for the idea of this Swan Song

sewcrafty 06-08-2010 07:16 AM

I was trying to think how to reach the most people. Maybe this is the way!!

dkabasketlady 06-08-2010 07:22 AM

I can get the top done, but I wouldn't get the whole quilt finished anytime soon because I'm a handquilter & I have several other quilts that I need to finish first. Is this ok? Let me know! Otherwise, PUT ME IN COACH, I CAN DO IT, I KNOW I CAN!!!

GrammaNancy 06-08-2010 07:30 AM

I haven't joined anything on the Board yet, this sounds like an easy start...not too scary. So sure let's go for it.

gollytwo 06-08-2010 07:38 AM

I'm in - this should get me back to my machine, which I seem to have been avoiding - thanks for the push

Swan Song 06-08-2010 07:41 AM

The idea is to make 1 nine patch block a day starting June 15 and the last one you make will be August 15. That should give us 62 blocks (if my math is right). After that you can assemble them anyway you like. Quilt tops, wall quilts, tote bags, table runners or toppers. Sash them, make then into D9P, add solid blocks between, anything, be creative.

You have however long you want to put them together. By the end of this time you should have enough blocks to put together one of those "UH, OH! I need a quick gift or get a jump on Christmas presents or baby quilts.

I know the people who started this and some of the shops will get theirs together in time for a potluck or picnic together. Since we can't do that we can take our time.

I just thought this would be a fun thing for us to do here since we have quilters of every skill level and everyone can do it.

amy WI 06-08-2010 07:42 AM

I have vowed to stop buying fabric until I use up what I have. This will be a great project to use up my stash. Thanks for this I'm going to try. :)

Sarah Jane 06-08-2010 07:44 AM

this actually sounds like a good stash builder. Being a new quilter, I could easily get a couple of yards of different fabrics to have on hand. I will even have a sewing room set up by the start date!!! count me in!

marymc 06-08-2010 07:44 AM

I've never tried something like this...I'm in. I can't wait to get home and make todays block. I don't have a huge stash so it should be interesting.

fliedermaus 06-08-2010 07:55 AM

Sounds good- count me in!

Swan Song 06-08-2010 07:59 AM

I made a New Year's resolution to use my stash and only buy what I need to complete a project. Stash first. Well, let me tell you how that is working for me. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/s...ashamed005.gif

I am a fabricholic, the first step is admitting...http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/s...aughing025.gif

Anyway, this will be a good way for me to use my stash and scraps.

marymc 06-08-2010 08:09 AM

Oh, I guess I'm jumping the gun. We start June 15th. Well I will go home and start thinking at least. Will there be a reminder?

seamstress 06-08-2010 08:10 AM

I've never joined anything on here, think I'll try this one.
Count me in...

Sew-n-Sew 06-08-2010 08:15 AM

Melinda in Tulsa 06-08-2010 08:38 AM

Ooohhh, this sounds like fun!

mama's place 06-08-2010 08:52 AM

Good Idea!! This is certainly doable for everyone. Wonder what is the most common size square for a 9 block.

craftybear 06-08-2010 09:01 AM

cool idea, please contact admin to see if he can move this to the swap area so others will do this, sew in maybe they could make a thread named Sew In instead of swap

I don't want to swap; I just want to make a dent in my stash.

Dragonfly Nana 06-08-2010 09:16 AM

For those "tricky" people you could alternate your block sizes - just make sure they measure in multiples of 3" finished.
Example: Some made with 2-1/2" squares (6" finished), some made with 3-1/2" squared (9" finished), and some with 4-1/2" squares (12" finished)
Then set them with solid, embroidered, or applique blocks (also mixed sizes to fill in) and you would have a Sampler type.
I think this would be a neat way to use up some UFBs or create a "theme" quilt (butterflies, turtles, christmas, fall leaves, whatever strikes)

Instructions for newbies?

I'm in, too, if I'm allowed to make them totally scrappy (oh, that's right, there are no quilt police here. LOL)

quiltinghere 06-08-2010 09:28 AM

Ok I have a week to think about it . . .

or for you to twist my arm to start another project! :(

Terryl 06-08-2010 09:31 AM

Can you feel me twisting? :) :) :) Come on you can do it, join us quiltinghere

nwm50 06-08-2010 09:32 AM

Terryl....tell her girl!

Dragonfly Nana 06-08-2010 09:41 AM

Come on QH....you know you want to....

nwm50 06-08-2010 09:45 AM

Hey..if i jumped in on it with what all lack of experience i have and do it with excitment  then more of us can do it! Finch, do i see you on board?

Kherrin 06-08-2010 09:55 AM

I'm in also!!! I need to use a bunch of scraps!!! Will be fun...so we make one 9-patch a day for a month...any size, color or fabric...What will we do with other than enjoy a 9-patch quilt for ourselves or gift for family/friend?

Pam 06-08-2010 10:22 AM

OK, I am in. My right hand is raised.

I, Pam the Procrastinator, do hereby pledge to do a nine patch for every day of the remainder of the Summer. I will faithfully check off each day as I make the block, some will be done ahead, some will be late, I am a realist. I vow to use scraps, NOT to cut into my stash! I will do my best to make them all different sizes to drive myself insane when it is time to put them together. Furthermore, I will use up those odd, not quite square half square triangles and other odd cuts. I will sew tiny pieces together to inspire others to say "What on Earth was she thinking"? I will fear no color, face yellow and purple and orange and turquoise and checks and stripes with a smile, or grimace, but I will sew them together. I will not quake in fear of the quilt police, for they live in me alone and I CAN have a glass of wine if I need to.
