TexasGranny it is a major job taking care of 3 that young! I don't think I could handle it any more, my 7 year old GD drives me crazy!! She wants to learn how to sew/quilt...then 2 minutes later she is out the door and forgets about it. Or she talks nonstop when she sits very long. I wish you loads and loads of luck!

Karen 06-30-2010 07:30 PM

I stayed up til 1:30 this morning sorting and ironing scraps for this project! I got a load of them cut today! They are 2.5 and 1.5" squares! I designed a pattern for 20" square blocks...there are 12 of them and this will be a good start!

What a happy quilt StitchingJoy has created I also started leaders and enders in very little time you can have hundreds of 4 patches done and a reason to buy more fabric!

This message is for Quilt Queen 2 or anyone who can help me.Regarding your beautiful blocks

I feel like such a dunce ....i have read this thread avidly...I love the nine patch but do not see how you call that a nine patch.....because it has that 4p in it. sorry but I am really confused...I asked GrammaNancy how she made hers....What am I missing??

Also I have tons of scraps but they are a mess and in several different boxes. Where do I start to get them organized ....i read that you make certain sized strips and sqs...is there a formula for organizing your scraps???? Please help and thanks....all of you on the 9P project are making beautiful blocks and quilts...hugs SG

Oh ladies...my apologies to all. I just watched a tutorial on the dissappearing 9 patch and I now understand where that 4p came from.....if you realign them up that way...so my problem is solved ....I am sooo thickheaded....I thought you made that 4p and the strips.....um...duh!!!! Sorry to have bothered you all. I can hardly wait to try it ....thanks for the tutorials on the 1st page,...hugs again to all of you..SG

PS I would like to know how to start getting my scraps in order or is there a tutorial for that too????

Swan Song 07-03-2010 03:02 PM

swimer are you doing the 9P project with us? If so I will add your name to the activities page. I may have missed your request, if so I am sorry.

Swan Song 07-03-2010 03:07 PM

Here is an article about organizing scraps-

Hope that helps.

Here are six scrappy disappearing 9 patch's...they are very busy/confusing and only 6-1/4". If I continue with them, I will need to set them with an alternating plain dark block to calm the fabrics. What do you think?

This is my first attempt with the D9P, I like the technique!

Hi Swan Song...you are soooo sweet to include me. I appreciate that very much. You did not miss me...I have been hanging around (I love the disapearing 9patch so much) and if I can get a handle on the scraps and get some cut....i would like to make a dissapearing 9patch and be a part of your group....I am planning a generous lap quilt and was going to make a Warm Wishes, but I have spent 4 hours or so reading all the pages and tutorials and now want to make the 9patch quilt instead. I am way behind as we are into July but would like to give it a try.

The thing is I will probably use the material I bought for the Warm wishes....is that ok?.....it's not scraps, not yet anyway.

and Swan Song ...big big, thank yous for the managing scraps site....I think I can start tomorrow getting some of it sorted out.

You are most kind....hugs SG

I love it ....it looks great to me but I like the busyness of it

sharon b 07-03-2010 06:28 PM

I like the busy look  Keep going

Swan Song 07-03-2010 07:00 PM

Ok swimer girl I will add you to our group. :-)

wilhelmina, I think they make it look like a crazy quilt. I would just have fun with it. I could see some embroidery or decorative stitches in it. I think it's great.

Here's what I made today out of four 9-patches. I'm thinking of making it into a small bag or purse. I used only 2 fabrics, and alternated like this:

2 blocks
dark,light,dark
light,dark,light
dark,light,dark

2 blocks
light,dark,light
dark,light,dark
light,dark,light

Then when I cut 'em (4 blocks cut make 16 squares) I used 2 squares from each set to make each block. Sew 'em all together and it's kindof a cool pattern. I'm happy with it, at least!

Oh, and they're made from 2" squares so the pieces are a bit tiny to work with. Next time I'll probably do 3" squares.

fliedermaus 07-04-2010 01:07 AM

Good work MegsAnn, looks swell!

BrendaB 07-04-2010 01:08 AM

So, you came up with a new pattern?! Way to go!! Love the block too. :-) Be sure and post a picture of your new purse :-)

QUILTNMO 07-04-2010 04:22 AM

very pretty nice job

Swan Song 07-04-2010 07:44 AM

Very cool block! Can't wait to see the bag.

thanks Swan Song....I'm om my way to the tutorial on scrap organization to print it out and get started...hugs SG

swimer girl 07-04-2010 04:03 PM

Well ....what a job the scraps will be....I have every size, shape and color....all I did today was iron quite a few pieces of material and part of a small box (there were tons of different materials in there) and put them into piles that I think I will be able to cut into the sizes reccommended by the Quiltville gal.....Bonnie, I think, is her name.

She gives great information, but my scraps (I have at least 20 years worth) are overwhelming. I guess I will try to do a little each day and see if I can get better organized. No promises tho!!! That is tedious stuff!!!

A question for you..... about the strings... I have to believe that the true strings... teensy teeniny widths..... are just thrown out...what is the narrowest size you all keep.....I think I would be interested in sending my strings to someone who would want them ....I'm not thrilled about trying to make a quilt with them.

Thanks for listening to me...hugs SG

I've read on quiltville's website somewhere that she keeps strings wider than 3/4". Hope this helps.

MegsAnn 07-04-2010 04:36 PM

I use scraps as small as one inch square. If you have extras... I'd LOVE to have some!

I think the 4patch/9patches are easier than they look. But they turn out really nice. I made them by making good sized four patches in two contrasting colors. 6x6 I think. Pressing them and then cutting a 3 to 4 inch strip out of the center vertically, and again horizontally. turning the smaller pieces so they contrast and sew the nine resulting pieces back together. Does this make sense??? I think someone may have posted a tutorial somewhere too, if I am unclear. I am pretty new to quilting but I seem to be blessed with figuring out how to do things...not so good a explaing though. Hope I helped in some small way. Nancy

QUILTNMO 07-05-2010 02:33 AM

I have made about 50 of these blocks, have run out of Christmas fabric, will be looking for a couple of FQ's today on sale.

Very pretty I like the fabric combos.

brushandthimble 07-05-2010 10:03 AM

Swan Song, thank you for the work you are putting into this, the link back to the photos sure is an extra, thank you!

I just got back from buying a little fabric to go with what I have started, cuz I ran out of stash/scraps in the Christmas with the gold metallic (which I usually avoid). FQ's Monday on sale and 20% drawing from the picnic basket today, YEH @ FQ's and 2 1/2 yards should be enough to finish the required number of blocks.
