So are you using the old disks as templates or what?

LOL--I'm watching the same two threads too!!

nwm50 06-24-2010 08:23 AM

And cheaper than having to go out and buying new templates!!
Smart thinking on re-using for some purpose or another!

Just checking in with the group and ya'll are doing a great job. I have just started. Taking care of Mom and things are settling down into a routine. Bad news is DH took off for a road job and took my fabric by mistake. Hw won't be back for 3 to 4 weeks ..You know what that means.... A trip to the LQS. I think I will go to the Amish Quilt Shop in Arcola, Illinois. That will teach him to take off with my stash. Have fun, Gang...

craftybear 06-24-2010 03:57 PM

did you have your fabric in his vehicle???

anyone online now, I can't sleep so up reading the board

sewcrafty 06-25-2010 05:53 AM

Boy oh boy, I've only gotten 5 blocks done and working on the next set of 6. I'm doing a 8" modified 9P with a sawtooth star in the middle and an alternating pattern of an Irish Chain for a queen size bed. Lots of cutting and piecing before the blocks can be put together. Of course, I didn't think  and make strip piecing out of some of it. DUH!!!! So I'm sewing every little piece together!! When the cut pieces are used up I'll be strip piecing instead, but can't not use what I've already cut up. Oh well!! May not have 60 blocks at the end!

oksewglad 06-25-2010 07:24 AM

I've got 12 pastel blocks made from 2 inch squares (using up scraps). I have seen several pastel with white setting quilts here on the board--it's inspired me to sew one--now to decide how to set the 9P's

craftybear 06-25-2010 08:13 PM

i love your quilt on your avatar

Thanks craftybear. It's a ThisnThat pattern called Blessings (I think) by Sherri Falls, but I miniaturized it to 2 inch blocks instead of 8" blocks; added the piping and kept the borders unpieced.

I have a "blanket" in the works it qualifies for this 9 patch project but I want something on the out side besides striping to make it bigger any ideas?

JudyG 06-26-2010 12:58 PM

You could strip piece a border with the fabrics you have used or other fabric with the colors you have used. It would be very pretty. Also, if you offset every strip in your piece, you can cut it on an angle and that makes a very pretty border instead of just straight across strips. Hope this makes sense. If you look real close at my avatar picture, you can see where I did the angled pieces at the very top of the picture - the bottom border.

Swan Song 06-26-2010 01:19 PM

Very pretty shopella. I just opened my eyes after working the past 2 nights. I will have to wake up a bit more and think about it. I like Judy's idea. I think I might use a white border and then the stripped border.

QUILTNMO 06-26-2010 03:37 PM

i agree with judy make a strip from each color all the way around and then make your binding a solid color like black since black is the main color its pretty i have that same black print

Nana2Sew 06-27-2010 06:56 AM

Here is a sample of the 30 nine patch blocks that I have finished. They are made from 2" squares and all from my stash. I'm still looking at pattern ideas.
This is sew much fun........thank you for hosting this project.

Swan Song, thank you again for getting this off the ground. So many of us are going to have wonderful quilts that we wouldn't otherwise have developed. I've enjoyed seeing everyone's beautiful blocks.

When I finish my current RWB military quilt, I'm going to take a break from that project and jump into the kids' scraps I've been accumulating.

StitchinJoy 06-27-2010 02:33 PM

Nine patch blocks make nice borders too.

I apologize that I've not let everyone know my progress. I'm so far behind it's not even funny (or rather I was). I did two different 9-Patch squares to finish the Boomerrang swap I was in ... and then I started a quilt for my niece. I'm VERY pleased how these have came out ...

Here's a picture ... I've got 14 done.

You're right on schedule, Robin, and the blocks are lovely.

CraftsByRobin 06-27-2010 03:11 PM

Thank you Dagny ... I spent today getting them caught up ... I need 42 / quilt ... and 2 quilts of 9-patch ...

I may change the layout and have a border and not so many squares ... not sure yet ...

Swan Song 06-27-2010 03:14 PM

GrammaNancy those are wonderful! You all have been so busy. I have been working, now I need to catch up! I actually found a focus fabric on sale for my Mom's lap quilt. It's more periwinkle and peach than a true blue and peach but I think she will like it. I found some green plaid in my stash that should work with it. But I have no peach in my stash :| so...since the LQS is having a sale I may trot off to see if I can find a peach to complete this. Until then I am putting together my daughter's Bow Tuck bag (the first I am making) and still doing 9P for my Christmas toppers.

Swan Song 06-27-2010 03:17 PM

Great job catching up Robin. They look great!

CraftsByRobin 06-27-2010 03:21 PM

Thanks Swan Song ... and thank you for organizing this ... I feel like I will actually get my Christmas projects done :D

GrammaNancy 06-27-2010 03:26 PM

Thank you Swan Sonng, this is such fun. Have fun with your Bow Tuck too, they are a really nice bag to make. I am making four for prizes for my sister-in-law's cat show in August.

Swan Song 06-27-2010 03:43 PM

You are welcome :D I cut all the pieces for the Bow Tuck and then promptly slammed a finger in the door. That was my early Thursday. Then I worked 2 nights and slept Saturday away so now it's back to business! ;)

oksewglad 06-27-2010 03:56 PM

So what's more fun--making the blocks or seeing what "Nifty Nines" everyone is coming up with? To me it's a a toss up!

I got going on this and just could not stop.... a couple each morning, a few more and night and viola... enough to make a quilt!
I have a problem with UFOs (I can't have them) so I had to put them together. There are 50 total 9P in this.

Dragonflynana, your quilt is beautiful.

Everyone is doing such a great job on the 9 patches. I have to get the camera out. I have a few done, but not near enough for a quilt.

Dragonfly Nana 06-27-2010 04:43 PM

Thanks JudyG. I have had the fabric for a while and was looking for the "right" pattern and this challenge just seemed to be it.

Nana2Sew 06-27-2010 04:47 PM

Dragonfly Nana.......

What a beautiful quilt!

Here's the deal, you make 1 nine patch block any size each day using fabrics from your stash....

I thought we could start ours June 15th and run thru August 15th so no one has to catch up. You can do them anyway you want 1 a day, the week's worth in a day, whatever you want, it's a no pressure thing the goal is to have 1 for each calendar day.

Ok, so who wants to play?

I'm in. I've been sewing 9patch blocks from stash and from a FQ packet of Kaffe Fassett fabrics that were gifted to me. I have 22 finished so far.

I got bored the other day, so I bought the stripes for the alternate blocks and started sewing some snowball blocks to go with the 9patch blocks. And then I sewed them into rows.

I decided to switch them up on every row-- one row they are horizontal stripes and one row vertical. The idea was to make the 9patches look like they are exploding. BAM! Happy 4th of July. It's not red white and blue but it's still fireworks.

I don't know how I missed this thread. I'm on here all the time! Is it too late to join???
I would love to have a project that I'm "required" to do a bit on every day :D
