Question do you think using these 2 blocks together that the quilt will be busy?????? the blocks will be set on point... and crazy squares will be added around the edge............. see attached picture.

It's disconcerting to me. I find the two blocks sort of clash in the way the come together. It's that odd shaped path that the light spaces make. Maybe because the 9 patch is based on 9-patch grid and the pinwheel based on 4 patch grid.

I dunno. Guess I'm the oddball. We all make our our quilts-- you need to please yourself.

I too am looking for a companion block for my nine patches but haven't settled on one yet. I will keep looking. Thanks for the inspiration!

I'm in LOVE !!!!! What a WONDERFUL IDEA for scraps. AND I love the way you use the light/dark squares to build up on the four-patch !!!!!!

I can certainly see THIS in my future !!

sewnsew, Can you share a picture? I am thinking of making one in those colors for a fellow going into the service.

Anyone making the D9P, what size squares are you starting with? I think my 2 1/2 squares would be to small and 4 1/2 maybe to big? Thanks

I used 6 inch squares for my D9P. Solid navy in 4 corners, solid red in center and the other 4 squares were red and whites - mostly prints - some with stars. Need to learn how to post pics..... sorry[/quote]

This is a pic of D9P made with 5 inch squares .It is SID and hasn't any binding yet This was done as a mystery and all of our new quilters (no stash yet) were able to make this.I like the scrappy look myself

Pics of the 9-patches I've made so far are posted here:

Some of them kind of morphed into things other than 9-patches. I can't seem to color inside the lines.

Beautiful work!

Melinda in Tulsa 07-15-2010 09:36 AM

My goodness, I'm behind. I have made 30 blocks so far. The first 20 9 patches were made from 5" squares and went into a baby quilt. The next are from 4" squares and I'm doing a D 4 to 9 patch block and I'm loving the results. I haven't touched my machine in over a week.

Tomorrow's another day, getting together with Lynnejean for a sew day! This board is WONDERFUL!

fliedermaus 07-15-2010 09:53 AM

Um...how many blocks are we up to? I think I may have fallen behind.
Also, if I want to share with y'all what I've managed thus far, is it better to post here, or on the pictures threads? I've seen people do it both ways and am not sure which would be best!

Melinda in Tulsa 07-15-2010 10:01 AM

I *think* we should be at about 30 blocks, June 15 - July 15. Is this right?

thequilterslink 07-15-2010 10:08 AM

Gee i have been making 9 patches right along and just realized i never signed up LOL. they are fun to do and i am making mostly 4 1/2 finished, but i did make some bigger to do the d9p with. 4 of the d9p will be my july doll quilt. Love all the quilts you are doing i just got caught up reading the thread this am.

Swan Song 07-15-2010 10:44 AM

thequilterslink I will add you to the group. :D
I believe we are at 31 blocks. I am 6 behind and will be 7 tomorrow because I have to work tonight. :-(

I will be catching up this weekend. I have the fabric for my DM washed and pressed. I think I will start on that next since I just found out she will be having hip replacement the beginning of Nov. I want to be sure to have a lap quilt out to her before that. Once I have all the 9P done for that I can go back to the Christmas topper presents. I need to sit in the corner and chant or something, things around here have been crazy!

Everyone's projects are looking GREAT!

Swan Song 07-15-2010 10:47 AM

Actually, I just checked and thequilterslink I have you signed up.

leaha 07-15-2010 10:48 AM

Your black, white and red quilt is absolutely beautiful !

CherokeeGal 07-16-2010 05:33 PM

Can Newbies join in this project, too?

MegsAnn 07-16-2010 05:35 PM

Absolutely! C'mon in CherokeeGal!

Swan Song 07-16-2010 06:13 PM

Hi CherokeeGal. Everyone is welcome. :-D I will add you to the group.

mrspete 07-16-2010 08:48 PM

I made it to 31 so, I'm on task. Hope this weekend I can stack 'em up!

No idea what I'll do with them but they are cute, fun and easy.

Bless you all for hosting and encouraging. Some of us aren't very good and it is nice to be a part of something that no one must tolerate.

Blessings, Ruth

Melinda in Tulsa 07-17-2010 08:05 PM

I'm now up to 41 total. The first 20 were just plain old 9 patches. They went into a baby quilt. The next 21 aor D 4 to 9 patch. I have enough precut 4 inch squares to get at least another 20 done, maybe more.

I am so glad to have joined in this sew along. It has really motivated me. Thanks Quilting Board

auntiehenno 07-17-2010 09:05 PM

Like site. That Stack and Wack is the prettiest one I have seen. Thanks!

dkabasketlady 07-18-2010 06:54 PM

I haven't posted any pics of my blocks yet, I'll do it tomorrow! I have so enjoyed this challenge.

karley 07-18-2010 09:20 PM

Hi, Somehow I lost any info on the 9patch project but I have been making 9patch blocks. Hope somehow I can meet someone in this project. Karley [email protected]

mrspete 07-18-2010 10:58 PM

I've relented to using my scissors again. The new blades for my rotor cutter isn't working well. If I'm going to cut one layer at a time I might as well use my scissors. ~sigh~, it's always something, huh?

I just had to vent, but I love these nine patches. I have lots of patches cut, just have to sit down and sew them together.

Oh see my new thread....."What a find!"

Blessings,
Ruth

Swan Song 07-19-2010 06:19 AM

karley I'm glad to see you found us again!

Melinda in Tulsa 07-19-2010 06:46 AM

As a beginner, I had NO idea that there are as many 9 patches as there are! I thought the 9 patch was just 9 squares sewn together, LOL. I didn't know this block was so versatile! I have learned SEW much here! (Now if I could just get my butt OFF the computer and into my sewing room!

quilt addict 07-19-2010 09:38 PM

Okay, I want to understand the 3, 6, 9" discussion. I cut some 2 1/2" strips tonight so I can get some 9 patches made. By my calculation that will end up with a 6" finished block. So if I wanted to do some 9 or 12" blocks, what width would I cut the strips to make the blocks.

Sorry it is just too late to do the math for me, and I used to be really good at it. Must be the old age.

Mine will be scrappy most likely but have the usual problem. Very little light fabric to work with. I will have to look in my stash some more because I didn't want to buy fabric.

If you want 9" blocks, you would cut 3-1/2" strips. If you want 12" blocks, you would cut 4-1/2" strips. Hope that helps.
