You can put any fabric you want on the back, it doesn't have to match the fabric on the front. But IMHO, I would use one from the front. And you don't have to place the inset fabric in the middle either. Your LA-er would probably appreciate it if you don't run it straight up and down as the seams create bulk and the quilt will probably stretch unevenly as she rolls it, creating tucks or wrinkles.
On my backs, I usually place the inset piece a little off of straight, just enough to make it look like I intented it. Here are a couple of examples you might enjoy that I found. The third one is the back I made for my Mom's quilt: |
Just be sure the red isn't going to bleed. Some reds are really bad at bleeding.

Absolutely beautiful quilt. I have seen many French Braid quilts and I have noticed all kinds of backing fabrics on them so I think whatever you put on the back should please you and make you feel comfortable with your decision. I have a question about the pattern-is it in a book or an individual pattern?

I'm just adjusting to a plan B for the back of a Candian Comfort and Remembrance Project quilt - the cream print backing is too small, so I make it exactly 4" smaller than the total quilt top and have added 7" of border around that in the tan colour that is the background fabric for the maple leaves. I was really glad there was enough leftover tan fabric to do the borders. Putting it together today.

If you want to put something on the back, I would suggest a design that was offset - so that if it didn't get lined up "exactly so" - it would not be a big deal |

I love your quilt. My advice would be to buy more black (if that is what your border is) and add it equally around the edges i.e. a border for the back. I know that you don't see the back but I just can't fathom a red cross in the middle of a backing of such a beautiful quilt. Cut the backing first so that the borders will be the same width all around. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Yolanda Wood River
