So, in addition to what color of thread would you use to applique around these, which sashing do you all like? Thanks so much for the input!!

jljack 08-23-2011 03:24 PM

I like the plaid, but would be careful on how you cut it so it looks straight. Also the light blue would be better than the dark..it's a little too busy, I think.

medots 08-23-2011 03:24 PM

I like the plaid, but any one would be fin.

Rachel 08-23-2011 03:25 PM

I like the plaid best.

medots 08-23-2011 03:26 PM

Cut the plad on the bias and you won't need to try and lining it up.

blueangel 08-23-2011 03:26 PM

Plaid also

I like the plaid but how about on the bias. I have done this before and it looks real cool. Just starch it alot and handle it gently when sewing. Do the binding the same way!

Cute!
peace

kiffie2413 08-23-2011 03:33 PM

I really was leaning toward the light blue, for fear that the plaid wouldn't look straight...but on the bias is a great idea for it...thanks for all the input!

Sassylass 08-23-2011 03:37 PM

I like the plaid too and your blocks are fantastic...please show us the finished quilt.

MaryAnnMc 08-23-2011 03:39 PM

I agree, plaid on the bias! Great blocks, BTW. Someone is gong to love this quilt!!

wolfkitty 08-23-2011 03:42 PM

Either of the blues!

bebe 08-23-2011 03:46 PM

plaid
thread a light blue, yellow or varigated

sandyl 08-23-2011 03:53 PM

black with a white line down the center. Would look like a highway.

Crqltr 08-23-2011 03:56 PM

I would do a narrow of the plaid..on the bias then add a wider border with the dark blue. Blocks are really nice.

tealady 08-23-2011 04:00 PM

I like the plaid, too, on the bias. Would love to see the pattern.

Quiltcamp 08-23-2011 04:02 PM

My vote is for the plaid also.

Jim's Gem 08-23-2011 04:03 PM

I like the plaid!! I think the tractors would be cute for a border!!

Hmmm....thats an idea...so, you mean sash with solid black, and then stitch a white line down the middle or the black...with a longer straight stitch?...clever idea!!...wow, so many great ideas...I love this board!!!

I agree with this. Maybe cut it on the bias? But you still have to be careful

kiffie2413 08-23-2011 04:06 PM

By the way, on the blocks, some of them are from fatcatpatterns.com, from Sindy Rodenmayer, and some of them I googled free coloring pages, and drafted them to fabric...just so I make sure the right people get credit!! I actually am making it for my nephew-to-be... but am wondering if I should save it until he is a little older, and make a different one for a baby...sigh...

I'd cut the plaid on the bias for sashing -- adds interest, and you don't have to worry about cutting it exactly right.

Bias can be a nightmare, though, unless starch it heavily first, before cutting. The way I do yardage is mix a 1:1 solution of Sta-Flo liquid laundry starch and water, "paint" it on using a large wall-painting brush until the fabric is saturated, toss in the dryer, and then iron with steam.

I have done bias binding this way, and it stabilizes the fabric sufficiently so you don't have to worry about stretching it while handling.

I posted a tip also about how to make sure your blocks line up when you do sashing without cornerstones. After you have your first row of blocks finished with sashing in-between blocks and on the bottom of the row, turn the strip over. With a ruler and pencil, mark all the seams on the wrong side of the bottom sashing strip. Basically you are extending the block seams through the sashing. When attaching the next row of blocks, line up the marks with the seams in the 2nd row exactly as if the marks were seams. Once pinned, if one fabric is slightly longer than the other, ease it in. With this method, when you are done, all the blocks will be lined up with one another. Otherwise you risk some wonky-looking strips when you are done!

I think the plaid will look best as long as you can keep it straight. Good Luck. Sue

alikat110 08-23-2011 04:33 PM

Plaid would be cute!

marscrafter 08-23-2011 04:42 PM

I like the plaid too, it's really cute and not overwhelming.

Dianemarie 08-23-2011 04:52 PM

definatly plaid -- what color thread did you decide ?

Snorky Lvs2Quilt 08-23-2011 05:25 PM

Love the plaid. I think that would really make an awesome sashing for your quilt.

lheartsl 08-23-2011 05:30 PM

liking the plaid...

Thank you so much for the hint on making sure the blocks line up!! I usually pin, and double check, re-pin, re-double check, etc... So, your idea sounds much better...I am a big advocate of starch, too...haven't tried it your way, but that sounds good, too...thanks!...And thanks to all of you have helped me!!

Well, tried black, and it was cute, but....have to admit, I am going with my usual, match color to part...lol...I think the black will be a great idea if the different pieces of the vehicles were all larger, but since some of them are so small, I was having a hard time getting it to look right....sure it was me, not the ideas, tho....really hard for me to decide....Thanks to you all!!!
On the sashing, still deciding...if its not the plaid, it will be solid black with white stitching down the middle to look like a road, that was a very clever idea Sandyl had!!

psquared52 08-23-2011 06:36 PM

Agree with tea lady...plaid on the bias would be really nice. Please show us when you finish.

QuiltnNan 08-23-2011 06:44 PM

i vote for the plaid

Great idea- thanks for sharing. Cute quilt.

MJONW 08-24-2011 03:26 AM

I would use a solid... Maybe even black or royal blue! Your fabrics arevfun, maybe you can use them together for the back!

SueDor 08-24-2011 03:39 AM

Plaid!

mummadee 08-24-2011 03:44 AM

OOOh, the plaid. Blocks are wonderful, can't wait to see the completed quilt.

piepatch 08-24-2011 03:49 AM

I vote for the plaid, and I love your blocks!

quilt3311 08-24-2011 04:06 AM

The plaid.

jitkaau 08-24-2011 04:13 AM

I like the plaid - correctly cut, it will not detract from your main shapes.
