So, in addition to what color of thread would you use to applique around these, which sashing do you all like? Thanks so much for the input!!
I like the plaid, but would be careful on how you cut it so it looks straight. Also the light blue would be better than the dark..it's a little too busy, I think.
I like the plaid, but any one would be fin.
I like the plaid best.
Cut the plad on the bias and you won't need to try and lining it up.
Plaid also

Cute! peace |
I really was leaning toward the light blue, for fear that the plaid wouldn't look straight...but on the bias is a great idea for it...thanks for all the input!
I like the plaid too and your blocks are fantastic...please show us the finished quilt.
I agree, plaid on the bias! Great blocks, BTW. Someone is gong to love this quilt!!
Either of the blues!
plaid
thread a light blue, yellow or varigated |
black with a white line down the center. Would look like a highway.
I would do a narrow of the plaid..on the bias then add a wider border with the dark blue. Blocks are really nice.
I like the plaid, too, on the bias. Would love to see the pattern.
My vote is for the plaid also.
I like the plaid!! I think the tractors would be cute for a border!!

I agree with this. Maybe cut it on the bias? But you still have to be careful |
By the way, on the blocks, some of them are from fatcatpatterns.com, from Sindy Rodenmayer, and some of them I googled free coloring pages, and drafted them to fabric...just so I make sure the right people get credit!! I actually am making it for my nephew-to-be... but am wondering if I should save it until he is a little older, and make a different one for a baby...sigh...

I'd cut the plaid on the bias for sashing -- adds interest, and you don't have to worry about cutting it exactly right.
Bias can be a nightmare, though, unless starch it heavily first, before cutting. The way I do yardage is mix a 1:1 solution of Sta-Flo liquid laundry starch and water, "paint" it on using a large wall-painting brush until the fabric is saturated, toss in the dryer, and then iron with steam. I have done bias binding this way, and it stabilizes the fabric sufficiently so you don't have to worry about stretching it while handling. I posted a tip also about how to make sure your blocks line up when you do sashing without cornerstones. After you have your first row of blocks finished with sashing in-between blocks and on the bottom of the row, turn the strip over. With a ruler and pencil, mark all the seams on the wrong side of the bottom sashing strip. Basically you are extending the block seams through the sashing. When attaching the next row of blocks, line up the marks with the seams in the 2nd row exactly as if the marks were seams. Once pinned, if one fabric is slightly longer than the other, ease it in. With this method, when you are done, all the blocks will be lined up with one another. Otherwise you risk some wonky-looking strips when you are done! |
I think the plaid will look best as long as you can keep it straight. Good Luck. Sue

Plaid would be cute!
I like the plaid too, it's really cute and not overwhelming.

On the sashing, still deciding...if its not the plaid, it will be solid black with white stitching down the middle to look like a road, that was a very clever idea Sandyl had!! |
Agree with tea lady...plaid on the bias would be really nice. Please show us when you finish.
i vote for the plaid

I would use a solid... Maybe even black or royal blue! Your fabrics arevfun, maybe you can use them together for the back!
Plaid!
OOOh, the plaid. Blocks are wonderful, can't wait to see the completed quilt.
I vote for the plaid, and I love your blocks!
The plaid.
I like the plaid - correctly cut, it will not detract from your main shapes.
