One Ugly Log Cabin

1 Attachment(s)
This was supposed to be a curvy log cabin. The colors just didn't play nice. So now, we are just going to finish it and donate it to the newborn nursery at church. Our problem, what can we do to make this a little more appealing? TIA, Kathy

how about applique some cute nursery figures on the blocks ?

grammysharon 07-23-2016 01:09 PM

The blocks are pretty, I think if you change the blocks around to a more interesting layout you will be surprised how pretty it could be.

rryder 07-23-2016 01:20 PM

I agree with grammysharon, I think if you rotate some of the blocks you will get some interesting patterns because you've got really good value contrast going on.

Use a micron pen to add prayers and blessings to the gold strips. Like a friendship quilt. The babies will love it whatever you do.

Tartan 07-23-2016 01:36 PM

Baptist Fan quilting will give it great texture.

I agree!! try switching things up

quilter2theend 07-23-2016 02:05 PM

Yes. try rotating them so you can see different patterns. Great colors.

dunster 07-23-2016 03:02 PM

Absolutely try a different setting.

Cotton Mama 07-23-2016 03:15 PM

I vote with rearranging the blocks.

redquilter 07-23-2016 03:19 PM

Agree with the others - try rotating the blocks to give it some interest.

Onebyone 07-23-2016 03:24 PM

The blocks are nice, it's the setting that is awful.

ontheriver 07-23-2016 03:31 PM

I agree with rearranging. I think you may see some curve if you do that. Have fun playing with them to see what you can come up with, your blocks are nice its the boring layout your not liking.

Chester the bunny 07-23-2016 03:41 PM

I would find preprinted small panels around the same size, or a kids print in the same colorway and alternate panels/print with blocks, you would then have enough for 2 quilts and it would make it more kid friendly.

susie-susie-susie 07-23-2016 04:18 PM

I would change the layout so there are 4 blocks across the top and 5 rows down. Then rotate the blocks so the red's are together to start and if you don't like that keep rearranging the blocks until you get a pattern you like. The colors aren't the problem, it's the layout as others have already said. Good luck and let us all know what you do with it.

Keep rearranging the blocks until you find a pleasing look. The blocks are pretty...they just need better placement.

nonnie60 07-23-2016 05:01 PM

Rearrange and use a complimentary juvenile print for a sashing that use primary colors.

Peckish 07-23-2016 06:30 PM

Agree - rotate! :)

sewbizgirl 07-23-2016 07:00 PM

Yes! Turn some blocks!

cathyvv 07-23-2016 07:42 PM

Swimming against the tide of comments here - the fabric on the bottom of each block doesn't, as you said, play well with the others. I think it needs a darker color.

Rearranging - I suspect you've done that already. If not, that might be the answer.

I would love to see the finished quilt, so please show us the finished product when it is finished.

Thrifty Quilter 07-23-2016 07:49 PM

The curve will be more evident if you re-arrange the blocks....just play around with it some...perhaps an 'open window' layout.

ScubaK 07-23-2016 07:53 PM

Rotate the blocks for some pleasing lay out options..

Try different setting of blocks and then applique baby shapes on.. Baby will love it.

Here's a link to some log cabin settings. I agree that you'll be pleased with the result once you change the setting of the blocks.

illinois 07-24-2016 03:31 AM

Like everyone else, rearrange the blocks into something more pleasing and I think you might like it better. Newborn nursery? It sure doesn't scream Baby but I wonder if you have an adult in the congregation who would enjoy this as a thoughtful gift. Perhaps someone undergoing long-term treatments? A shut-in? Wheel-chair bound? Or maybe have it in the sanctuary for someone who needs a little warmth during services? I do like your colors! Very rich.

nantucketsue 07-24-2016 03:38 AM

They remind me of toy trains, so you could embellish them with lighter colours, but I would also put sashing to separate them. This would make a lovely quilt for a small child.

ckcowl 07-24-2016 03:39 AM

Everyone is correct , rearrange the blocks to show off the ( curvy log cabin ) blocks and the colors will work. They are lovely. Just need to be laid out to show the design.

Reba'squilts 07-24-2016 04:25 AM

I agree with switching the blocks around...It could become very interestinging!!

I agree completely, it needs a darker color along the bottom. The current fabric seems out of place. Making that change and rearranging your blocks is what I would do.

tessagin 07-24-2016 06:04 AM

I agree with the others. First thing I thought of. Many patterns for a log cabin. Just google or go to the gallery here.

Jordan 07-24-2016 06:07 AM

I also agree as to changing some of the blocks around and I think you will be surprised at how different it will look and maybe you will love it more.

Yooper32 07-24-2016 06:09 AM

This was my first thought also. just changing the layout to different sides up down and sideways will make a huge difference.

ManiacQuilter2 07-24-2016 06:09 AM

I would remove that outside tan and replace it. Then rotate the blocks until you find a layout suitable.

sprice 07-24-2016 06:30 AM

rearrange the blocks and add more red--maybe for a border!

Rose Bagwell 07-24-2016 07:18 AM

I agree with grammysharon, if you change the blocks around , it would make a lovely quilt. Love the blocks & color, just need the 4 dark to meet in center , or alternate the blocks for that curve look.

Pennyhal 07-24-2016 11:13 AM

Since you are donating it to children, I'd get a great baby fabric for the back that would pick up a couple of colors from the front.

wendiq 07-24-2016 01:17 PM
I agree with grammysharon, I think if you rotate some of the blocks you will get some interesting patterns because you've got really good value contrast going on.

I think if you batt it and quilt it with a cute backing, that it will be used and appreciated.

MadQuilter 07-24-2016 01:51 PM

If you rotate the blocks so the light fabrics meet in the center, you will have great space to add some fun quilting.

bernamom 07-24-2016 02:00 PM

If you just want to finish it and be done with it, I would find a kids fabric with boats, trains or blocks (something more boyish) to use as a border. Back it with the light polka-dot fabric if you have enough, bind it with one of the dark colors and call it done.

What about the Barn Raising arrangement for Log Cabins? I just made one like that, and I think it might work for your blocks...(My first arrangement of blocks did not work, so I feel your pain...)

Mine is in purple and white, but maybe it will give you enough of an idea to play with?

I don't think your blocks are so bad...

Dina
