Question about Ott Lights
 

I was going to buy myself an Ott light for Christmas today, but I didn't realize how expensive they are! I had a cheapie floor lamp from Wally World and I trashed it so now I have no good light for hand crafting in the living room. I have an Ott on my sewing machine table so I wanted to get a floor model. They have 25% off at JoAnn's today. Any suggestions as to which one I need? Better place to buy one?

I personally refuse to spend that kind of money on an Ott. People rave about the light, but as long as you get the right "temperature" bulb, you can use any standard lamp and get illumination that is just as good. CFLs have temperature ratings on the packages to help you decide what kind and how much light you want. For "working" light, such as quilting, sewing, and handwork, I prefer a temperature rating of about 5000K. This is a bright, true white light, great for detailed work but too harsh for relaxing and watching tv.

I'm a real Ott light fan. I have 4 in my sewing room and one in my sitting room for hand sewing. All but one are floor models. I got them all at JoAnn's when they were 50% off. To me, they are worth the expense. My oldest lamp is 15 years old. I replaced the bulb last year and I use the lamps every day. Oh, I also have a folding desk lamp that I take to classes. I am 78 years old and I think I see better with Ott light.

I've had mine well over ten years and love it. I think sometimes they are marked down more at Joann's but not sure. Also check Home Depot on line. They have quite a few.

Thanks. Can you tell me what wattage I should be looking for? There are different ones and I am confused.

As far as wattage, I would think the more the better! See if they would turn on a floor model at JA's.

I agree with Peckish, although I bought an imitation of an Ott floor lamp and the darn thing just quit working for no reason. I love my Ott lights, but they are expensive. It's probably most important to get a good lamp that can accommodate the bright bulbs.

I love Ott lights and have recently seen them marked down - maybe at the craft stores - plus the coupon. Well worth that money, although I wouldn't pay full price.

I have several Ott lights but will not be purchasing more. I have spent hundreds of dollars on their floor lamps alone. I love the lamps but to be honest, the hardware is chintzy and you can't get replacement bulbs from Joanne's or Ott. Hard to believe but true. I also purchased a folding task lamp which flickered so badly at startup that I gave it away( I kept returning them as I originally thought it was defective.it made me feel really sick. The last lamp is own is floor task lamp. It has the big box type plug. The plug keeps sliding in to the plastic box so I can't use it. So, I have spent about $500 on lamps that I can't get bulbs for or don't work right. If you look in Joann's or Lowes you can buy a 25 watt screw Ott bulb for $7-8. I would and will purchase those bulbs to use in other lamps that do not use the proprietary bulbs which are unavailable. I think the bulbs are awesome.
