My paternal grandmother made scrappy quilts for every one of her 8 children. She did not have money to buy fabric, so everything she made was scrappy. The distinguishing design was that every quilt used blocks that pieced in the first letter of the first name. I still have my dad's quilt. I guess I have wondered if she named her kids with easy letters to piece. Three were N's. My dad's was H. The others were M,V,F, L (seems unlikely so many easy-to-piece letters would be happenstance). At any rate, I love her concept.

I really like the idea of QuiltsRfun about trying to use fabrics from a family member. Also, I agree with the other members as to use your favorite or easy pattern and use manly fabrics. Good Luck and I am sure your grandson will treasure the quilt you make whatever it is.

My husband and I both have several quilts that were pieced by our grandmothers. All are scrappy, using simple blocks, and each is loved. My favorite scraps are the plaid and striped shirting fabrics from the 40s and 50s.
I love the idea posted above of making a scrappy quilt block pattern from the first letter of the child's name. To me, that is more timeless than the whole name. |
I really enjoy reading everyone's responses. some great ideas here. I will check later on to see if there are more ideas posted.

I made this one for my adult son. It is done in flannel but doesn't need to be. It was fun and easy and the rectangles presented many opportunities for different quilting designs.

Everyone posted great ideas, & the quilts shown are beautiful! Any one of them would make a wonderful quilt for your new grandson. And I know he will cherish it, knowing that it was made by grandma with love.

I see so many beautiful quilts and ideas given here- for a young child, I agree there's no way of knowing his interests coming into this life. What I do when I question what I need to make for a certain person...I pray...then I start cutting out...each quilt is unique and made specifically for that person. I hope you post pics when you decide what design this special new little one will have.
