I don't know about 10, but there are some basic commandments that I seem to break over and over and over and over again!

1. Thou shalt sew right sides together. Right. I just made 8 half square triangles - thinking about putting RST as I went and ... 4 of them are wrong. Four. It's light fabric and you have to look really close, but ... really? Four of them?

2. Thou shalt have thread in thy bobbin. I thought a 42" seam was my record, but then remembered quilting a diagonal on a quilt and ... no bobbin. Happily sewing away with ... no. bobbin. thread.

3. Thou shalt have a threaded machine needle. If I cut it too short - and somehow I often cut it too short - the thread pulls out of the needle. I can sew quite a while without thread, too! (I've had machines where you had to hold the thread or it would pull through, but this one you're not supposed to do that. Most of the time that works.)

ADDED: (I knew there was another one!)
4. Though shalt change machine feet when thou changest stitches. That's an oldie, but a goodie!

Sometimes I just amaze me!

:) funny

Been there, done all that too...lol!

I hear you there. Someone here on the board suggested putting a small piece of velcro on the side of the machine to dock the thread in so it doesn't slip out. Great piece of advise.

Thou shalt apply fusible web to the wrong side of the fabric for applique. . . just broke this one today!

blueangel 10-05-2011 08:25 PM

Funny

MadQuilter 10-05-2011 08:27 PM

Though shalt not covet thy quilting buddy's stash or wallhanging. lol

LucyInTheSky 10-05-2011 08:28 PM

Thou shalt measure twice and cut once. Especially late at night, I just love cutting my pieces 1" too short. *head shake*

LindaM 10-05-2011 08:28 PM

Ah Ha Ha HA HA! Yup, have done all of these.

JanTx 10-05-2011 08:31 PM

I was happily making a Farmer's Wife Block - I've made about 30 of them. Got everything cut, made the half square triangles - half of them wrong sides together, of course - and .. the pieces don't fit. They're supposed to fit. seriously. Somehow I cut some rectangles short. I put it all in time out, closed the door, and came to join you all here. Enough.

lindyline 10-05-2011 08:31 PM

How about thou shalt not sew thy clothing in with the binding.
No truly it wasn't me!! Not much.

JanTx 10-05-2011 08:35 PM

How many times can you sew a corner of a quilt onto some other piece of it when you're quilting on a domestic machine? Is there a limit and then you won't do it anymore? Please?

ogama 10-05-2011 08:38 PM

thanks for sharing i thought i was the only one doing these things, lol. blessings ogama

Ummmm I give up how many?? Oh not a quizz! If it's me then the answer is infinite. I can do just that for hours at a time. Keeps the rest of the family amused listening to me yell at the fabric. Like it's to blame.

JanTx 10-05-2011 08:46 PM

Isn't it wonderful to know we're in such good company? I do find that when I start breaking these commandments, I might as well shut it down for the night. Hard to break just one!

Jan in VA 10-05-2011 09:14 PM

Oh dear, oh dear.
I assume this means none of us will be going to quilters Heaven as would be the case with the original broken Commandments issues.

Repent, Quilters! The End is near!

Thou shalt not sew late, late, late at night, especially in poor lighting conditions. Every time I do this, I look at the work I did the night before and wonder "what was I thinking, when I did this".

QM 10-05-2011 09:59 PM

Thou shalt not sew thy calloused fingers to the applique....don't ask.

Now that's a good one!!

BKrenning 10-05-2011 10:22 PM

Thou shall not let thy fingers hang over the cutting edge of thy ruler.

Thou shall not applique thine clothes onto thine quilt block.

Thou shall not test thine iron by touching it. My 14 year old son still has trouble with this. I have no idea why. We suspect he may not be entirely human--LOL.

I always do this... my mom always touched hers so I do the same :)

I would have to add...
thou shalt keep thy fingers away from the iron when pressing seams, learned this the hard way today. (it is one thing to tap the bottom of the iron real quick to check it, but quite another to iron the side of the finger.. ouch)

Jim 10-05-2011 10:53 PM

Darn!!!! I resemble all of them and many more

cr12cats 10-05-2011 11:24 PM

oh oh looks like someone better pack a fan in my coffin cause i hear it is hot down south lol broken most of these and sure i will more haha

purplemem 10-06-2011 02:39 AM

Thou shalt not sew through thy finger with the sewing machine. The needle is to go into fabric only.

shnnn 10-06-2011 03:03 AM

I've done all of these - last week I was ready to pitch my iron and head to the store for a new one, so...

When all else fails, make sure it's plugged in!

And your son is not the only one who has issues checking hot stuff with his hands, my neighbors dd has on more than one occasion watched me take a pan out of the oven with a hot pad - and ask me "is it hot?" as she puts her hands on it!

LindaM49 10-06-2011 03:09 AM

Thread coming out of needle...check.

Sewing without bobbin thread...check.

Cutting strips and blocks for my Christmas wallhanging...and some are too short...check. And what makes it worse is...when I cut them the 2nd time they were too short again...LOL. Check

I also touch my finger to my iron...taught by my mother too. She always wet her finger and then touched the iron so of course I do the same. Love to hear that little sizzle...lol.

MoanaWahine 10-06-2011 03:49 AM

I am sitting here LOL at all these, but have to realize that I am part of the crowd. I think I have committed all of these at one time or another, some more than others  So much fun being in the same crowd

Dolphyngyrl 10-06-2011 03:49 AM

Thou shalt make sure all settings are correct before sewing on a different machine. I am too used to my espire where settings are saved, turned on my brother started to sew and needle hit the foot.

Ellageo 10-06-2011 03:50 AM

As ye sew, so shall ye rip............been there done that!

JanieH 10-06-2011 03:57 AM

When I was younger I wanted to be a rebel and break all the rules - guess I finally made it! I have broken all of these and probably more that are still unwritten.

scrappy2 10-06-2011 04:02 AM

I also have broke the above commandments and the sad thing is I will probably break them again, again & again but not meaning to. Looking forward to many more yrs. of quilting.

laalaaquilter 10-06-2011 04:14 AM

sewtruterry 10-06-2011 04:17 AM

Thou shall sew and ye shall rip and rip and rip and rip. How many times do you have to sew the seam over and over and over again before you give up and say that is good enough. My "record" so far is 7 times. I kid you knot. I was ready to pull my hair out until I realized that I had twisted the one block by 90 degrees. That is when I realized the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

quiltinghere 10-06-2011 04:22 AM

How about...

Thou shall not *DRINK* and do *quilt things* at the same time...(unless, of course, you're free motion quilting...then a *DRINK* seems to help with the free motion).

Do I? No way...cause then I'd sew my fingers or my fabrics the wrong way together, cut my fabric the wrong size, iron my fingers or touch a hot iron! :) :) :)

mountain deb 10-06-2011 04:27 AM

I take it these commandments are ageless? I mean really, at what age do we learn not to make mistakes? lol

Jo Belmont 10-06-2011 04:45 AM

I can still hear Mother Superior droning, " ... birds of a feather ... "

Glad to be in such good company!

quiltmom04 10-06-2011 04:45 AM

Thou shall not use the single needle plate for a zig zag stitch !
