This is so me. And there is finally a day where nobody calls and I'm home alone and I'm too sick to get out of bed. :( Happens every time.

I have a little sign in my sewing room that says, "Creative people are never neat." Keep quilting and disregard the mess!

marthe brault-hunt 09-20-2010 03:10 PM

My husband settled the problem for me,when I was qulting by hand on my loom. After breakfast, he would ask me if I wanted to quilt. Then he would take charge,
watching the kids, answering the phone and preparing the meals. He made sure no one would disturb me .He would bring me a glass of juice when he thought I needed a break! I do miss him

Quiltfanatic 09-20-2010 03:26 PM

Someone once said: A creative mess is better than tidy idleness!!

Annz 09-20-2010 04:09 PM

Not just when I'm working on a project.

Baglady1546 09-20-2010 04:55 PM

I thought I was the only one, whenever I get really busy my dh or my son or one of the dogs need my undivided attention.
If I'm not doing anything they are busy. I think it's like Murphy's law. i vote for the gagging and tying up. LOL

Welcome from Newfoundland, Canada. My career for this past 25 years has been Cooking and I am a messy cook. Someone told me once that a good cook is a messy cook, The same goes for quilting. A messy quilter is a good quilter.

jayelee 09-20-2010 06:32 PM

You know when I gt married 29 years ago my husband taught me how to d laundry and to cook his way(at least how his mother wanted it done) Now neither he or his mother remember how to do anything with the house They cant even remember to rinse dishes before putting in dishwasher

Baglady1546 09-20-2010 06:52 PM

Gee that sounds familier

I meant to say with OUR creative genius could we create a new version of neatness. I've heard it said that creative persons have their own version of organization which does not look neat to a type A, but they can find almost anything they need in a timely manner. I think it is a matter of priority...

Nope ....I just turn on answering machine and turn off ringer. If it’s important they will leave a message.
My DH though I had lost it for sure. Wish I could have had a video of that reaction. When I get ready to sew I don't want to get disrupted. Sewing is my time and usually when am on my time I have already taken care of everyone else needs. Its nor like I have little ones to care for I know when my kids were little I always did my sewing after they were in bed for the night. I still like to sew after my DH goes to bed.. Habits are hard to break, Am a night person and that’s when I get the most done. Since we have the computer I enjoy online visits with other night owls

penski 09-20-2010 08:27 PM

wow sounds like we both live in the same house !!!!

zz-pd 09-20-2010 09:07 PM

I have to clean up my mess unless I am quilting a quilt, as I have to sew in the living room, hubby does all the house hold chores now, and is very supotive if I am in a rush to get something done, because I had a lot of pain, and am now playing the catch up game. there are times he will insist that I stop for the night, and that is when he sees I can bearly stand sitting in the chair, and he can read the pain in my eyes loud and clear. He loves to watch the process of quilting, and loves to see it all come together, we can sit in the same room and not say a word, but we are together, and that has always been good. God bless.

I am the same way.DH always wants to do some thing the moment
I mention wanting to do it later. now my 5yr old gran-daughter is coming for a holiday and I have had to remove the fabric I had on the spare bed back into a half finished refurbishment of the sewing room. I will try and get every thing right with her help of course this next week.

Quilt4u 09-21-2010 01:32 AM

Your not alone. Same here.

Nope, I can't stand clutter, so I can't settle down to sew until all else is tidy and no one is "wanting", of course there are only the 2 of us plus the dogs now, so it gets easier with age.

Mine isn't too bad but it is amazing that my 11 year old dog Hunter knows when I go in there and that's the exact moment he decides he has to go out. My sewing room is at the far end of the house so it's a hike and by the time I get back, Fiona his "sister" decides maybe she'll go out after all.

krlowe 09-21-2010 09:45 AM

Not just when quilting, with everything I do! When I cook my DH comes behind me and cleans up because he can't stand the mess.

QuiltinGramma 09-21-2010 10:25 AM

I take the cordless phone with me to my sewing room so I don't have to go back downstairs for it.

My dogs do the same thing. My sewing room is in the basement, so if I have been down there "too long" they start woofing to go out. Usually one goes out and then when I get back to the basement the other one wants to go out. That's how I get my daily exercise.

shirleysonshine 09-21-2010 06:34 PM

yes, indeed. It is amazing how much a grown man can need with no kids at home, and just the two of you. I could get a lot more done without the telephone ringing, and the "where is?????" I can't find it..........Even the dog wants attention when I am busiest.

shirleysonshine 09-21-2010 06:38 PM

I love your quote, but I really love your wall hanging. I want to do something like that for my room.....one day after I finish some UFO's piled up. :D

shirleysonshine 09-21-2010 06:38 PM

I really like the quilt as your avitar. Beautiful!

shirleysonshine 09-21-2010 06:56 PM

Riversong, very nice. I also like mine neat when not working, and it is motivating to go into the room when it is so clean and organized. But, while I work it does get strewn and I have to clean up before I go out. Unless I have to stop my project to cook, etc.

Dee 09-21-2010 07:36 PM

Glad I'm not alone. Love your I love to sew room wall hanging. It is so cute.

anniec55 09-21-2010 07:44 PM

You are certainly in the right place! except mine almost always looks that way. But then, I am always sewing something!

Oh my, I am laughing so hard I have tears. Your comment was really funny but oh so true I am sure.

OMG I am not the only one???? All of the above for me too.

Loretta 09-22-2010 05:40 PM

I should put a sign on the sewing room door. Bless This Mess.

eleu16 09-23-2010 06:56 AM

Yes my sewing room looks like this because there is not enough space. But I won't be bothered by other family members while sewing , I live alone, only my cat likes to sit on every piece of fabric I'm trying to work with.

I just went to the Quilting Expo in Madison WI a couple weekends ago and my first purchase......a sign for my house that says "A messy house is a sign of a happy quilter"........

I also have one that says "creative clutter is better than idle neatness".....

They pretty much tell it the way it is at my house.

OMG, I'm laughing my head off! I can just picture it. Seriously though, when you find that button, post a notice so we can all dismantle it on our sewing chairs!

laughingquilter 09-23-2010 07:22 AM

Riversong....I am in awe! Not even on it's best day is my sewing room that organized!
