Does anyone elses sewingroom look like a bomb went off in it when you are working on a project? Does everyone in your household suddenly lose all ability to cook, iron, or find something they desparately need...while you are sewing? I am feeling at my wits end!!

GENIUS AT WORK …………. DO NOT DISTURB |
I don't think you can be BOTH neat and creative at the can time.....I can't seem to manage that. And it's only my sewing room.....
|
ALWAYS when I am in the middle of a project!
|
My sewing room gets messy when I am working on projects. I usually close the door so I don't have to look at it or keep pesky Kola off my work. But if it starts creeping into the hall then I clean.
Rule of thumb, the moment you step into your sewing room, area or cubby. Somebody is in desperate need of something "only you can find or do". Other than gagging them, taping them to the sofa or nailing the door shut to your sewing area, we have to live with it. |
My room and my house sometimes too LOL
|
DH can go all day without talking-he works at home. Just let me go and start the sewing machine and all of a sudden he's like "Chatty Cathy".
Welcome from Western PA. |
Oh ya, that's me. And considering I sew at the dining room table, meals involve shoving things over to make room, or dining on the sofa! My son, age 10, thinks the sound of the phone or the sewing machine is his cue to come asking to look for something, get a snack, or get klutzy and hurt himself. His timing is awesome. Don't get me started on the dog - she finds all kinds of mischief!

My sewing room goes thru seasons. One day I can walk in and it is so organized and the next day looks like a hurricane went thru it. I am currently in the Hurricane season. Hopeing to get it organized again soon.
|
We just need bigger rooms and for everyone to get their own dinner and do their own laundry. LOL I have a big cutting table but most the time, I'm working on the only empty space on it, maybe a foot square. LOL

Live by yourself where the whole place is your sewing room! I don't even own a sofa; if you're coming to MY cottage, you're coming to quilt! Only my bedroom is mostly non-threaded, and even that is about to have a design wall 7' x 8' installed. LOVE IT! Jan in VA |

Gota love DH!!! And son started behaving the same! |
True storie....One night I started to sew and my phone rang…I jumped up and turned my sewing chair over and started looking and grumbling.. My DH just looked at me and said WHAT’S wrong????????????.... I replied
It seems like I can go all day and no one calls but the minute I set down at this machine the phone rings of the hook……..DH reply……. So why are U checking the chair …MY reply…..Am looking for a buzzer that triggers the darn phone. |
I tend to keep my sewing area clean so I can get what I need when I need it.
It only looked like a hurricane hit when I was doing the organize. |
I always, always promise myself I will put things away as I use it but never, never do. My sewing room looks like it belongs on one of those hoarder shows. I do have lots of baskets and such for stashing things but things never end up there. Not sure why.
|
I'm not lucky enough to have a sewing room, I have little stashes of projects tucked here and there in the living room!! (They're artfully stashed though!) By the way - Debbie U - I LOVE that piece you have pictured in your post - beautiful!
|
Unfortunately, mine is not just "when working on a project." I am terrible. I get it clean and resolve to keep it that way and then a project comes up and zap, it's right back to chaos! Woe is me! I am a hopeless mess!

Caroltee
You were so funny! LOL |
Uhhh, do you mean to tell us this does NOT happen with all quiiters?
Good grief, how can anyone sew in a sterile operating room-like sewing room? Of course, losing the cat or a small child in a pile of fabrics may be reason enough to clean the room, but not until it's really necessary. |
pretty much looks like a train wreck caused by a really large tornado while I'm working on a project.
|

---------------------------------------- Yup, husbands and kids are all the same. Just sit down at the sewing machine, or get on the phone long distance (with an expensive phone company) and instantly DH will need something desperately or son will come running to tell you that he told teacher you would bake five dozen cookies for next morning's school party and you have to call teacher to find out what kind. The very act of putting hands on a machine or phone triggers something in their minds that demands instant notice and not later, but now! |
Oh my and I thought I was the only one. It isn't only quilting its beading painting or any other thing I might be working on.
My DH calls the kitchen table my sewing table and the kitchen island my cutting table. I am so glad to know it isn't just me. Thank you all for confessing uh I mean posting.lol |
Thanks for the laughs. I was frustrated. A few glasses of wine and I am feeling better. I did have to stop sewing though.:o)
|
I guess I am anal. I like my sewing room in order. I pick everything up when I am done for the day because I don't like to sew in a mess. But boy watch out while I am sewing because I am like Elanor Burns. I just through all my scraps over my shoulder.
|
Yep! I'm in agreement with all of you. Specially about the DH not talking until its sewing time! As soon as I'm ready to sew all of a sudden he starts talking too. So what I do is invite him to come into the room with me because I'm going to sew. A couple of times he has joined me. He comes and talks for awhile and I start asking him about my project what he likes and doesn't like - ya know quilt talk - well he gets bored really soon and usually doesn't hang out too long! Then since I give him the talk about spending time together he decided ok I'll come and read for awhile but then I talk to much and with the sewing machine humming that was too distracting! Then I said come and watch tv for a bit but he ends up falling asleep so he totally understands now when I tell him I'm going to sew for awhile!  He's a great man and I really think he likes his peace and quiet times!
As far as a mess in the sewing room-it all depends. It is unorganized when I'm sewing you tend to find things easier! I try when I have to stop to have it somewhat cleaned up at least so you can walk in the room. After each project I take time to clean it up only to start fresh with my next project. :D :D |
I clean up and put everything away after I'm done sewing for the day.
It is best because I share my sewing room with my 4 cats and the will get hair all over my quilt. I must clean all the hair, litter, and food bits up everyday when I go in to sew. Oh yeah, and sweep the floor also. |
Never had a sewing room, but would love a little cottage all my own. One can dream, right.lol
|
I am lucky to have a nice sewing room, dh has been wonderful in assisting with making a big board ironing board, putting up shelving, peg board and such. I do have the same issue though of sit down at the sewing machine, and next thing you know it is "where you at?" I have my sr upstairs and I get plenty of exercise running up and down. Maybe that is a good weight program!
|
Oh, when I go to sew, everyone, including the dogs and cats want my full attention! LOL My sewing room is usually clean and orderly even when I am working on a project. I try to keep things put away when I am done using them. It doesn't always work, but I try! LOL

If I stay home to sew (often go to BFF's house, only older people there), there is DGS 17mo old, arms up, "Thnewing, Mamma, thnewing!" He wants to sit in my lap and punch all the buttons while I sew.
*sigh* thnewing is his elemental word for sewing. |
My sewing room is spread around the house - my sewing machine lives on the diningroom table, my ironing board is in the great room, and I use the island in the kitchen for cutting. Thank goodness I have a large walk in master closet as that's where I stash everything when expecting company!! If people "pop" in unexpectly, oh well - they get to see the "real" me!!
|
If it's not the Hubby, the kids or the phone.....the dog decides he needs to go out for a walk!
|
When I'm busy sewing I don't stop to do something just because DH thinks I should. He can change his thinking. I don't interrupt him during a ball game or a woodworking project. I do take the dog out but that saves me time in the long run!
|
LOL @ Caroltee response......Happens to me all the time only when i sit down to the computer for the QB, either it's knocking at the door or my cell ph going off!
|
I live alone and have a sewing room that has spread to the living room where I have my large ironing station and an end table full of hand applique. I live on peanut sandwiches and cheese and crackers, unless I eat out or get carry out. I have always said that they should come up with a pill that you can talke 3 times a day instead of cooking and eating. Wouldn't that give us so much more time to sew?
|
My problem is my 2 year old grandson. Quilting seems to be a magnet for him, and he always wants to "help".
|
my problem comes from cats, not husband--they know as soon as I pick up a needle and come running from who know where and must be petted by me and only me at that moment! How can they hear a needle going through fabric? A question for the ages!!!-----Glad to hear that more of us "Women Libbers" are taking our space back at home. No it's not selfish--it's sanity!!!!
