Today while I was working on my BOM Stitcher's Garden Quilt, I was thinking how much I was enjoying what I was doing and how slowly I was working on it. I guess I just take my time, savoring every step. I know I could work on it faster and be done with it, but I really do enjoy taking my time. Do you do the same thing or are you a fast sewer?
I definately take my time. I usually sew in my own room when my DH goes to sleep (he works nightshift), so I get from 6pm to midnight by myself to sew.
It depends on the project and if there is a deadline.
I'm usually really slow with things, but if there's a tight deadline I'm quicker.
Sometimes I set deadlines for myself so I don't have something that turns into a UFO. |
how about both? I savor each moment but I tend to work fast. I always have, even in school, no matter whether I did well or poorly on an exam, I was always first to finish.
Slow and steady wins the race.
I do both. I'm taking my time making the Piecemaker BOM Calendar quilt for 2011. It's all applique. It's my have to sit in LR and act like I don't want to be in my sewing room project. Amazing how much work I get done on it, lots of company coming over lately.
I like fast quilts to sew in my sewing room. I use my Go and can try out many patterns. I have one quilt project in my hand quilting frame I stitch on every now and then. No hurry for that one. My DGD will get it when it's finished. She has already claimed it as hers. |

I am on the slower side. My mom was my teacher and very much a perfectionist which was good because I learned to do it well. I have a friend who sews very quickly whether it is garments or quilts. However, I often think her finished product good be better if she slowed down and did the in between steps such as pressing well.
I'm VERY slow, and my sewing room is set up to keep me that way. I have to walk from the cutting board to the machine, from the machine to the ironing board, and from the ironing board to the design wall. My way of sewing keeps me moving around and I like it that way. Keeps me from doing things "automatically" and well ... screwing it up!!
I do take advantage of time savers when I can though - like chain piecing, and cutting multiple pieces at a time. But for the most part I'm a part-time sewer (*maybe* twice a week - *maybe* once every two weeks!), and I'm a slow sewere so yeah - it takes me forever to get a project from conception to completion. |
Both. Depends on what I am working on.
Piecing I do quickly, actual quilting I take my time and move slowly.
I definitely take my time unless the birthday is getting too close for comfort. I just like to relax and enjoy each step of the quilt I'm working on.
I am definitely "slower" than "faster". Do not do marathon speed sewing.
This is my therapy time. I definitely take it slow. Life speeds along so quickly, it's almost like stopping time. Reminds me of that old saying "Stop and smell the roses". Enjoy what you do no matter what speed.
Since I have so little time to actually sew, I go as fast as I can. But since I'm new to sewing, "as fast as I can" is actually pretty slow. (I feel like a politician with that answer.) I really try to get as much done as I can in whatever block of time I have. I love the process, but I love the feeling of being finished even more.
FAST...I am always in a hurry to get something done, deadline or not. Not because I don't enjoy what I'm currently working on, but, because my mnid is in super go-mode and I want to create my next project. My DH says "slow down, you'll enjoy it more". My comment to this is... I am enjoying it, but, I have a new idea brewing. I will never be bored quilting...too many ideas, so much fabric and too little time.
I prefer slow!
I want to finish, but then I'm almost sad at the end because it is almost over.
I do both. Yesterday, I noticed I was going slower. That is a good thing when trying to get that perfect 1/4 inch.
It depends. If it is an easy project that doesn't take much thought so as a rail fence but if it a more complicated pattern go more slowly ..I don't like to take things apart.i'm working on one now for my GD which is just squares layer. have all the squares cut now to the sewing machine. and sew away.
Depends on what the project is, if its strip piecing and rotary cutting it is sometimes pedal to the metal. Applique depends if it is hand or machine. If by machine it goes pretty fast, but hand is when I want to relax. So guess I work both ways, just depends on the project.
Slow here - faster when it comes to completing the top but then I accumulate a bunch of them and it takes me forever to do the FMQ'ing on them and finish binding. If I get one or two tops done a year I'm a happy camper!
I took a class once and while my fingers were fumbling at snail's pace the lady two chairs down had finished and was starting her third ruched rose! Intimidating to say the least, except she was so nice and said "My grandmother taught me this years ago!"Slow or fast, just enjoy!!
My first job years ago was as a Lab Tech. We got three deliveries of speciams a day. We had to get each one done before the next arrived. I learned in a hurry to get the job done as fast and efficiently as possible. My life since has always been that way. I earned my mpspeedy name more than 40 years ago.
My quilting and sewing gets done the same way and most other things in my life as well. I am a speed reader and usually produce anywhere from 15 to 20 Linus quilts a month. I can handquilt a queen size top in about 6 weeks while watching TV in the evenings. |
It depends on what I'm doing. I do a lot of PP and once I'm underway and stitching a block together, I can go at a pretty good clip. Other piecing, I find it works out better to be very precise, work slower and I won't have to rip out seams later.

I seem to find myself quilting and sewing too fast and have to make myself slow down in order to do a better quality of work.
I often start out slowly but then get excited to see the final project so my sewing gets faster and faster.
I just go with the flow. No pressure. Sometimes I have to get the ripper out, and most of the time it's cause i'm not paying attention to what i'm doing. Sewing is my hobby, therapy, and I truly love the outcome of all my projects.
It depends on my mood. I am generally a fast girl.
Whatever I feel like, or sometimes it depends on what music is playing.

If I take my time the quality definitely improves. The 1/4 seam is more consistent and I use "Jack" (the ripper) a lot less. When I have a rush job I don't enjoy the project as much.
I would say I'm a turtle. I work slowly so I don't make any mistakes and enjoy what I do

I'm sssslllllooooooooooowwwwwwwww.... but I enjoy every minute of it!!! When I see how much some of you accomplish, I sometimes wish I was a faster seamstress... but then I realize I'm not in a race... It's OK if I'm slow. On the other hand, it's sometimes frustrating when I think of all the quilts and other projects I want to try...
So, I just try to enjoy every minute I'm quilting... It's fun to read the responses! |
I cherish sewing and quilting so I take my time and enjoy what I am doing. I find doing it slowly eliminates stress instead of feeling pressured. However, I realize that younger people are working and raising families and have to cram it in when they can.
Process or Project people?
I speed up when the blocks are repeated - and repeated - and repeated. When the steps are "new", I DO slow down!
