I used to feel the way OP does, but found out that a square quilt fits my queen bed much better if there is no pillow tuck. I don't want the quilt above my head, just around my neck securely.

I make most of my lap size quilts.........60 x 70-75 as I have a kitty that likes to join me when I cuddled under mine. I also make my baby quilts about the same size so they can grow into them. They grow so fast that if I made them smaller, they wouldn't get the full use out of it.

I wondered about that when I recently made a baby quilt for a neighbor. I made it 40 x 48" - mostly because it's a tumbling blocks and I had had enough at that point. (But also because babies are almost square.) Sorry for the duplication; can't seem to remove the quilt top photo.

My GD's boyfriend comes from a family of tall people--all way over 6'. I've made her quilt very long, just in case.

No right or wrong, just do what you feel and have fun doing it!

I think part of it is that when you put it on a bed, you do not use it as a bedspread that you fold over the pillows. It is laid across the bed with decorative pillow shams on top. I would make fairly square twin bed size quilts for the kids in college dorm rooms. They lay across the bed but hung a bit further on the sides and covered the storage areas under their slightly higher beds. This also made a good size for them to grab to take when they had outdoor activities but still small enough that they were easily laundered.

Ha, makes me laugh, the comment about crib quilts for square babies! I like a larger crib quilt than many of the patterns as no one actually puts a quilt in with a baby (risk of SIDS) so they don't really use until little older, we are all taller, so throws need to be at least 66+". And unfortunately, we also need at least 50 wide! Even my tiny DIL asked for a larger quilt to snuggle with the g-boys---said the first one I gave her worked for her but left 3 boys no cover!

I think square patterns are adaptable, but much cheaper to show, fabric wise and effort wise. I don't mind that as I can either make them longer, wider or leave them the patterned size......

I tend to make square and rectangle ones. What ever fits for the use. Around here, throws are 65 x 90. We have tall folks, at 6'6", on down.
