Few of my quilts are square. I prefer rectangles. Nearly all of mine are lap quilts for the couch and mostly they are about 60 x 72 or close to that.

That seems to be the consensus. It's a nice general size (5' x 6'); roomy for a kid and big enough for an average-sized adult to be covered neck-to-toe, with room to spare for a small dog. (I say that because I used to have a Miniature Pinscher. It's characteristic of the breed that they cover themselves with a blanket.) Thanks for all your feedback; it was helpful!

I don't like square quilts either

Squares look best on Instagram too.

From what I understand, square quilts are great for keeping your walls warm, too.

Square quilts are perfect for the elderly who need a legs or shoulder wrap w/out the heavy weight. They can easily be added on top of bed or tossed off when feet get too warm.Having said this I still prefer an oblong design.Easy to add blocks for extra length.:)

I have tall kids and they like their quilts taller than wider. I make all lap quilts quite long. I am finishing one now in the Mountain Majesties pattern and it is 48 x 74".
