Rectangular seems to make the most sense to me for bed quilts or lap quilts. Guess art or wall quilts it wouldn't matter much.

Square for wall hangings, rectangle for one to cuddle with.

Depends on the pattern. Some look awesome square, others rectangular. I like a rectangular one to cuddle with on the couch, but for bed, square.

Square for a bed or lounging on a couch I want it longer so my feet aren't sticking out. For a baby or wall hanging I don't mind square.

I think squares look better usually but aren't as practical to me. I only make rectangular ones.

Otherwise, rectangular. I'm wide - but I'm still longer than wide.

The pattern is probably square because the layout looked nice - and it would have been more of an effort to figure out something to make it longer.

Agree...

Bed quilts should fit the bed. A queen or king bed is near enough to square that a square quilt has the advantage of being able to go on the bed in any direction, which can help it wear longer.
