Virtual Quilting Weekend--1/16-1/19/15

First virtual quilting weekend of the new year! Do you have a large pile of UFOs you're struggling to shrink? Have you started Christmas presents for this year? (If so, good for you!) Or maybe you just want to make yourself a little something. Whatever you're working on, please join us this weekend as we virtually gather in our quilting rooms and share encouragement, ideas, and pictures.

For first timers, just post on this thread what you're working on this weekend and check out what others are doing. Pictures are welcomed and encouraged.

Just a heads up, next VQW will be Feb 13-Feb 16. That's President's Day weekend.

I have quite an ambitious list for my weekend. I'd be happy if I got more than half of it done.

Happy Quilting! :) Any questions, just ask.

bee3 01-16-2015 06:03 AM

I was going to clean, but this is an even better idea! I'll have to figure out what to work on :)

cjsews 01-16-2015 06:07 AM

Sounds great. I am off to a retreat next week so I need to do some major prep work.

erindipity 01-16-2015 06:07 AM

Hello! I've been a member here for a while; but rarely post. I will join in as I have a few swaps I need to get on and this will keep me focused and busy. I just got a grace queen frame and I am kind of scared to even try it out...maybe after I get my cowboy boot swap blocks and my machine embroidery swap blocks done I will head to the frame...wish me luck!!

PaperPrincess 01-16-2015 06:08 AM

I may be able to join in! My original plans got canceled.

bee3 01-16-2015 06:10 AM

I was going to clean, but this is an even better idea! I'll have to figure out what to work on :)

Sewnoma 01-16-2015 06:49 AM

Yay! I have a 3-day weekend so I'm hoping to get some sewing time in!

I have a pile of hot pads half-done I'd like to finish first...because I NEED new hot pads! After that I'm not sure - my new year's resolution was not to have any quilting deadlines; 2015 is my "sew whatever I want, whenever I want" year. So maybe I'll work on a UFO, or maybe I'll start a new UFO!

I was given some of the Derwent "Inktense" pencils and ink blocks for Christmas so I want to play with those, too.

pennycandy 01-16-2015 07:10 AM

A couple of days ago I started a scrappy Irish chain from mens shirts and a few homespun to add some interest. Found a light golden camel color fabric for the light part. This will be for a man so I'm going with dark fabrics for the large squares. I'm in the preparation stage and still have lots of starching and cutting to do. Don't think I'll be doing much sewing. I wait for the starch to dry before I iron and cut.

tropit 01-16-2015 07:17 AM

OK...count me in! I've been sick all week and I need to get off my duff and do something constructive. I'm working on a scrappy, "lover's knot," quilt and I have a few UFOs that I've been pondering about. I'm not sure I can do pix, but I can certainly give some, "colorful commentary." :D

tucsonquilter 01-16-2015 07:25 AM

I'm in. Working on two different quilts at the same time.......why? LOL

Raggiemom 01-16-2015 08:32 AM

Sounds like we have an energetic group already!

erindipity 01-16-2015 10:17 AM

I have the last six embroidery blocks done and getting ready to start on the boots. I have no idea why but it's taken me 45 minutes to find this thread again..LOL Anyway- still sewing along.

Krisb 01-16-2015 10:32 AM

Well, add me to the "I was going to clean but this sounds better" list. My goal today is to finished stabilizing the inherited Dresden Plate blocks, find an appropriately-sized circle template for the centers, and applique the centers.

Doggramma 01-16-2015 11:28 AM

I'm in! I'm still working on my snowman quilt from the last time. I also started hand embroidery on a small art quilt.

IrishgalfromNJ 01-16-2015 11:39 AM

Yeah! Virtual Quilting Bee! It's going to be a fun weekend. I'm going to be trying my hand at paper piecing a Union Jack block (free pattern from Craftsy), cutting my Civil War reproduction fabric into squares for my Civil War Buckshot Pin Cushion (I have emery sand on order to fill it), ironing and marking my fabric for this embroidery pattern: http://www.123stitch.com/item/Bobbie...ry-Kit/13-2553, sewing charm squares for my Christmas quilt, making some test embroideries with my new embroidery machine, installing software for my embroidery machine, and organizing the container I keep all my current project materials in.

Julie R 01-16-2015 11:53 AM

Yay - reorganized the sewing room last weekend, so I'm free to join in this weekend. I'll be attending a Sew and Meet for Quilts for Kids on Saturday (hoping to get the binding on 3 quilts) and will quilt away Sunday afternoon/evening while my hubby watches NFL playoff games.

quilt addict 01-16-2015 12:16 PM

Wow, Irishgal you have lots to do. I have been putting off the yard work so that will be first thing tomorrow. But I want to join in later in the day! Still haven't taken my camera in for repair, they will probably tell me you just have to buy a new one. I hate this throw away mentality but if no one will fix it for less than a new one costs, kind of crazy. So sorry I will not be able to share pictures but love to see everyone elses.

Oh and there is Mystery Train #8 to climb aboard also!

Quiltngolfer 01-16-2015 02:37 PM

I will join in. Yesterday I finished all the unfinished blocks for a BOM from a few years back. Today I cut out the cornerstones, sashings, and borders for it. I am ready to get those put together and I can call it another finish. I also organized my BOM project sheets into sheet protectors and a notebook. Tomorrow I will continue work on the BOM project.

Nammie to 7 01-16-2015 03:03 PM

Count me in -- I have 4 pair of jeans to cut into circles for the next jeans quilt. I'm still working on my applique quilt. Last VQD I was on block 3. I'm now on block 19. Also want to put the next round on the "All Star" quilt I'm designing for my grandson. On Sunday my granddaughter will come up to start on her chevron quilt.

IrishNY 01-16-2015 03:30 PM

I'm in. I have a baby quilt top that I need to finish. If I get through that, I have another top that's half made which is supposed to be souvenir of the time DH and I spend in Provincetown every fall. Unfortunately, I also have a lot of chores and errands that need to be done this weekend and a funeral to attend, so I may not get nearly as much sewing done as I would like.

AngeliaNR 01-16-2015 03:51 PM

I sandwiched a Carolina Chain today. Tomorrow, I'll work on paintmejudy' s next clue on the mystery train ride. I need to do borders on a D9P, and I'd like to get to my challenge project from here on the board. However, I have a sick cat who needs a lot of attention, so we'll see how it goes.

Judith1005 01-16-2015 04:12 PM

I will also be joining you. I planned to join you last time. And that didn't work out so well for me. I will be working on a baby quilt and a little boys sports quilt top.

Raggiemom 01-16-2015 04:35 PM

Well, I didn't finish anything today but made a lot of progress on stuff. Well, I did finish the January block for Pat Sloan's BOM. I'll post a picture tomorrow as I'm too lazy to get the camera out right now and take a picture :)

See you in the am.

kristijoy 01-16-2015 04:48 PM

I have one quilt I'm working on putting together (it's quilt as you go). I only have a couple more of the long seams to go. I'm hoping to get that put together and binding put on! :) After that, I have a couple of piecing projects in the works: the challenge quilt on my design wall that I'm hoping to get started on and another modern one with some zippy fabrics in the cupboard.

We are taking a ski vacation on the 23rd. The guys are going to ski while I sew in condo while it's snowing!!! I'm so excited!!! But because of that, DH leaves with the 'luggage train' (he's driving all our stuff) on Monday. My son and I will fly in a few days later. So I'll be without my machine for a few days. *Gasp* My plan is to finish the hand bindings on a few small quilts and cut out a couple other projects.

retiredteacher09 01-16-2015 04:52 PM

I will be joining too. I need to finish fringing and tying 3 fleece blankets, however, before I can start on any sewing projects.

Goals for the weekend:

1. Complete clue 2 for Judy's Mystery Train #8
2. Sandwich/pillow turn 3 baby quilts

memepat 01-16-2015 06:08 PM

I will joined or I have joined. Working on a scrape quilt (Railfences and Pinwheels). Have to prepare a back for a quilt and load on the longarm and start stenciling design. It I have extra time I need to prepare back for a flannel quilt. Just to get a portion of this done would be great.

cannyquilter 01-17-2015 01:22 AM

I am in. Have done nothing except sandwich a quilt since before Christmas. Very ambitious for this weekend but nothing ventured nothing gained as they say. Things I want to do this weekend.

1. First and second clue for mystery train 8.

2. Cut out D9P

3. Cut out zipper quilt.

I will be using a Sizzix to cut so should be doable. If I manage to do that with time to spare I will start chain piecing. Going on shopping trip with DGDS this morning then the rest of the weekend is mine.

GailG 01-17-2015 01:56 AM

I jumped in yesterday by printing out the tutorial on the Boxy Stars as shown a couple days ago. Began by cutting strips and then WHAM*** slashed my finger with the rotary cutter. Got that patched up and finished cutting strips. Then slowly cut pieces for a few blocks. By last night I had six 1/4-blocks stitched and pressed and six 1/4-blocks placed for piecing. After these last two weeks of cold and rain, it will be nice to see sunshine coming through my windows.

donac 01-17-2015 02:26 AM

I am hoping to join in on Sunday. Tooday I am going to my LYQ to hear about the dear jane they are starting next month. Then dh and I are going to have a late lunch with ds2. I have to get some things done. My quilt shop is running a challenge to get 4 ufos done in the next 4 months. I got mi e recorded last wedk. My machine went iin service last week and I pick it up today. Ontop lof that I am working with a local high school on their production of Annie and we have 8 weeks to get the costumes together.

I'm working on my latest hexie creation, so I definitely won't get it finished this weekend but I thought I'd share my progress so far. I started it at the end of November and have done a little on it most days since I started.

This is my second hexagon project and both of them have been purple! Haha, I obviously have a thing for purple!

I'm also working on another EPP project, but as I will hopefully be entering it into a competition, I'm not sure I'm allowed to post pictures of it, so that one will have to wait until another time!

I hope everyone gets to do at least a little bit of quilting this weekend :-)

jmoore 01-17-2015 04:48 AM

I have to work today until about 2 pm but it's supposed to snow here Sunday & Monday so I'll be indoors with you all. I need to make a baby boy quilt before March due date and have two throw size to sandwich and FMQ. I'm in.

chickadeee55 01-17-2015 04:50 AM

Penny, I would love to see your project, the colors sound great and I have always wanted to do an irsh chain.

I will be working on my quilting all weekend. I have an applique tulip basket block to finish for my local guilds quilt show and have to finish putting together Bonnie Hunter's Illusions Mystery Quilt.

Oh, goodie! I missed the last few VQWs you had. I had major surgery the week before Thanksgiving, so have been out of the loop. I have been itching to do some quilting. I made the MSQC binding tool star and am working on adding piano key borders to make it rectangular. I haven't mitered in ages, so I need to do some unsewing and restitching. Hope to post pics of it later.

Virginiagirl 01-17-2015 06:10 AM

I'm in. Hand quilting on one quilt (different shades of aqua and piecing a burgundy, pink and gray block in a block.

IrishNY 01-17-2015 06:38 AM

Thanks to the push of VQW, I got a lot done on my baby quilt last night. I have to go to a funeral this morning so won't be back at it until late this afternoon, but hope to finish it today and get going on another WIP. Have a productive day, everyone!

kauailover 01-17-2015 07:53 AM

I'm in. I have a quilt on the longarm need to finish and several baby quilts cut out for project linus. The ladies are coming over on Monday to sew, so hopefully will get some things done that day also.

OMG...(((Gail))) How's your finger today? It seem that you, "took one for the quilters." I hope that you're on the mend.

I've continued working on my Lover's knot quilt. I've been sewing the 6.5" squares, pressing and squaring them up. I've then been sewing four of those squares together to make a large, 12.5" square, then squaring that up. Then, I've started sewing those big blocks together into rows of 5, or 6...I haven't decided the final size of the quilt yet. Right now I have 6/row, but I may take a block off of each row. I plan to tie the quilt, but I may try my hand at hand-quilting it with a big stitch. I'm about 1/3 of the way done with the quilt top.

The look of my quilt is very, "down home," and scrappy. Some of the fabrics I'm using are from the 1920s. I wanted to do the whole thing with '20s fabrics, but I didn't have enough, so I just looked for the ugliest, most appropriate fabrics I could find. The quilt will be for a cabin, so the funkier, the better. I haven't decided on a backing yet...maybe a plaid.

I'll try to get some pix over to the thread today. I'm excited to see what everyone else is doing!

I didn't see this post yesterday but I'm definitely in! Managed to get my Grand Illusion pin basted on a friend's basement floor yesterday .... it's taking it's place in line to get quilted :D And last evening I worked on the machine quilting of my 2013 Aurifil thread BOM quilt. When I get home from my walking group this morning I will be spending the afternoon in the sewing room again.
This is the Aurifil top that I'm working on, I know it's posted at some point on the site already when I finished the blocks.
