Where is the most economical place to buy thread?
I'd like to stock up on thread but I don't the prices well enough to know if I am paying too much or getting a deal. I mostly use Aurofil.
Also, when piecing, do you match the fabrics or use a neutral, so you don't have to keep changing thread? Which colors do you find are the best to keep on hand? Thanks |
I use aurifil thread too and I mainly purchase cream color, light and dark grey. I do have a spool of black for when I want to do blanket stitching on something. Our LQS sells it for $13.00 each spool approximately but they do have sales once in a while and that is when I buy several. Their sale is usually "buy 3 and get 1 free". I really don't know where the best prices are but I am sure someone on this board will help you out.

I use Gutterman's pale tan (neutral) for 90% of everything in top thread and bobbin. Only change to black if absolutely necessary.

I get mine mostly at Walmart (piecing) or JoAnn's (machine applique).
As to color I like a soft grey, or light beige. |
I like Superior Thread's Masterpiece (Alex Anderson) and I get it at Red Rock Threads. I use mostly #151 Canvas.

Try the fat quarter shop..

When piecing, I use neutral thread. If I had to change thread for every fabric/color change, I'd quit making quilts.
Walmart is where I get my coats and clark piecing thread. I quilt on a long arm and use Connecting Threads polyester cones for it. I generally use a white or natural color thread, but have a few colored cones as well. |
Two places I look for anything quilt related: Amazon (so-so luck, but you never know) and quiltshops.com.
I only use Aurifil, and usually a taupe or grey, although I have used a peach color I got on a great sale. It was fine, no showing. Amazon has a 12 pack w. storage box of neutrals for $97.49. A big investment, but works out to $8.12 per spool. quiltshops.com - entered aurifil sale http://search.myquiltshops.com/cgi-s...myqssearch.cgi Also - Walmart.com it's $9/spool. If you would use a cone: Pumpkinvinecorner.com has cones on sale for $37.99, with large color selection. |
Redrockthreads.com, joanns, superior when they have sales

I also like Aurifil but simply cannot afford it for day-to-day piecing.
i have relied upon connecting threads 50wt for just about everything. I recently tried YLI Soft Touch, just for giggles. I like it and all my machines like it, too. (My Brother brand machines work better with 60wt. top thread) the YLIST is about $20 for 6,000 yards. about $5 for 1,000 yards. (https://www.uncommonthread.com/YLI-S...read-s/159.htm) compared to $45.95 for 6,452 yd of 50 wt Aurifil, or an average of at least $10 for 1,500 yd, YLIST comes out the clear winner for me. |
