I sew on my dining room table. I try to keep clutter down to a minimum by only working on one or two items at a time and stashing extras under beds or in boxes. I set up the iron in the kitchen and take it down when I'm done. It's the only way to keep the mess under control.
|
I took my sewing room from my family room and put it into a smaller spare bedroom. I can shut the door and don't have to move anything. I love it!
|
I'm in the basement too! Just retired and built our dream house in the mountains of Eastern Oregon. SO....the daylight basement was designed around my quilting needs - 25' x26'. I think my hubby was tired of the projects all over the house for the last 30 yrs.
I have a longarm on a 12 ft. frame so that took up most of the space. Since we needed such a big mechanical room I got a separate room for my fabric. Talk about heaven 8' x 12' with scads of shelves. Cutting table is 4 lower cabinets with a cork counter with a big cutting mat and ironing station at the end. Sewing machine is under the window for light and close to the ironing station/cutting table. Little parlor stove in the corner with a comfy rocker and Ott light for hand work. This is really a dream come true. |
My husband remodeled two stalls of our four car garage into a sewing room for me, including heat and air. However, now since I am in the process of selling off most of my stash, I will probably be moving into my son's old room. Will miss the large space.
|
My grand plan was to use the big bedroom upstairs as my sewing 'studio.' That hasn't happened. In the meantime, I sew at my dining room table - in an open concept LR DR main floor, so yes , you see everything when you come in the door.
We just push things aside to eat. I also have reclaimed half of the basement for my quilting frame, since I have it set up at the 10' size. I had to evict my son's toys from half the basement. It works. |
Absolutely a dream come true... PLEASE take a few photos and post them, maybe there is hope for the rest of us to design our perfect sewing places. I know I'd love to see the photos.
|
Why are you selling off? And again, I'd love to see photos of the garage change, as this is still a hope on my part, I'm always interested in seeing ideas..don't hurt to dream (I drool  )
|
I sew in the sunroom, it is wonderful because of the natural light, three of the four walls are windows, and the view is great also the front window over looks the lake and the side windows over look the bush.
|
Sounds like a beautiful view, care to share a photo of it?
|
My sewing heaven in down in the basement. I have one room that does double purpose with sewing/quilting and scrapbooking. And the mess is out of site from upstairs, I just close the door.
|
Spare room and the living room floor for layout. Have a window to peakout but wish were at the front of the house, so I could peek out and see whats up :)
|
I have taken over both of my kids' former bedrooms when they grew up and moved out. My son's room is my "sewing room" where my machines, stash, tools, etc. are housed.
My daughter's former room is my "quilting room" where I keep my frame for hand quilting. Both rooms are about 11.5'X 11.5', so neither are very big rooms. Here are links to pictures of the rooms. After our kids moved out, I took over my oldest son's room that was 9' X 15'. It also has a 5' X 8' walk-in closet. A couple of years later, I bought my Voyager/10' Hinterberg frame. Since it took up most of the bedroom, I moved my sewing stuff into the closet. It's really pretty neat! Then I bought one of those fold-out cutting tables....that is now in the office we made out of one of the other bedrooms.
|
I took over the "spare" room but I have fabric, batting & other supplies stashed wherever I find room! lol.
|
My quilting area is a studio, about 30ft. fr.house. Two story small house shaped like a barn, with deck. Room is 12 X 18 dec. in Mary Engalbrite colors and fabrics. My dh did it for me. Love that man. Glo
P.S. first story is dh workshop. |
Oh, this sounds so cute, please share a photo of the building. My husband gets to build his shop next spring, wonder how far I could get talking him into a sewing studio on his second floor? Nice idea, at least it's sunshine and he don't have to give in converting the garage. Like this idea.
|
I have what use to be my daughter's bedroom, it's not overly large, but enough room for everything in there that I need.
|
My smallest bedroom is my sewing room,It's nice to have a desinated room for sewing but it also have a futon for the grandkids and it ends up being my junk room when I don't know where to put things and it's only 10x10 so it gets pretty crowded and I have to clean it out to sew.
|
We don't have a spare bedroom, so I sew in what is a utility room. The only utility in there is a water heater in one corner by the door. It's small.....but DH bought cheap cabinets from the area where they sell bits & pieces :-) He also made counters & I use a big desk for sewing on.A tall open bookcase holds fabric....most of it. I do cutting at the kitchen table. That gives me plenty of room to spread out.My room isn't fancy, but it's mine with a door I can close.

I was lucky enough to be able to transform our 2nd bedroom into my own place.

I'm working in my dining room right now too. My new sewing space upstairs is being remodeled/converted (new ceiling, lots of new lighting, paper, paint) from a bedroom with a separate walk in closet and a sloped ceiling attic storage room. The plan is to have all of my storage, and stash that's bursting at the seams, in the closet and storage area, while the main room 14 X 16 is for my work tables and machines. While all this has been goiong on it's been hard to find anything I need and when I get around to organizing its going to feel like Christmas to discover everything that's been in bins, etc.
|
Sounds like you'll have a wonderful quilting room.Worth the aggravation for sure.

Hi,I'm new to this board and am thoroughly enjoying my time on it. Have already gotten quite a few ideas and I thank you for them.
I am delma, been quilting on and off since I was 7, now its my passion. I belong to a quilting group of 7 women who meet each Tues afternoon, once a month, usually the last Tues of the month, we do charity quilts for various places. My quilting area is a room my DH had built on the outside of my large bedroom, needless to say it is totally full and I'm still adding to the stash. I still work full time while we raise a grandson who is now 16 and full of himself. Hope to retire in June 2012 which is his HS graduation date. Need to get to work now and earn my keep, sending blessings and small pockets of joy. delma |
I use my kitchen table.

Welcome,Delma.......sounds like you have a nice quilting space.LOL@ Grson being full of himself. At that age, aren't they all ? :-)

I am new to quilting, only made one so far! Two weeks ago we moved into our new town home, which has a loft. Bet you can't guess were my crafting area is!! I don't have it all set up yet, but when I get it finished I will post pictures! I can't wait to get all this unpacking finished so I can start on another quilt!!

I sew in the frontroom, the kitchen, ect anywhere but the bathroom so far. I even have been taking the machine to a few friends houses as they have room in there places and I have bodys in mine. Long story about that one. Anyway my landlord is convertting the garage out side to a sewing room for me if I can keep people out of there long enough for her to finish it. Till then I sew whereever the machine ends up.

I have had my sewing space in
1- a spare bedroom Don't have any spares anymore since my mom and oldest daughter moved in. 2- a space in the basement That was dark dreary and depressing and away from the center of the home 3- I am now in a small office off the dining room. This is my favorite, except it is too small. I used to work from home before I retired so it is still set up like an office with sewing stuff crammed in. My dream is to gut it, and make it into a nice sewing studio. It is usually in disarray, because I am not neat when I work. Then it gets to the point that I can't work in all the clutter so I clean and organize, and within a few days it is a mess again. |
I used to have all my sewing in the dining room when my boys were home. We have a cape cod and the bedrooms were all being used. I have an L shaped office table that I use for my machines. This table covered 1/2 of my sliding glass door and I had fabric stacked under it in storage bins. When we took family pictures you could see all the clutter in the background. Some times the clutter wasn't so bad.
My younger son's bedroom was upstairs and when he married at 19 while he and his wife were on their honeymoon my husband and I did a clean out (he already had his stuff moved). We took out the carpet, painted the walls--which now have flowers on them, put in floating floor and moved all my sewing things in! My dining room emptied out in a hurry! I was so used to all the stuff there I couldn't believe how big the room really was! So now I have a lot of space with a very nice closet for all my sewing table, cutting table, iron board and stash. I love it!

I would love a more dedicated space, so I may end up moving it all upstairs to the office.
Where does everyone else work? |
mione is a corner in my bedroom - I do have a huge bathroom and the ironing board is on one side. It works

My quilting space use to be the dining room table, then 2 years ago when we moved we set it up in half of the basement. But, quite often I still bring my sewing machine up to the dining room table (habit I guess). This last Spring my hubby bought me a long arm and since have put in a fabric bookshelf. I use the pool table I made in high school as a cutting table (the perfect hieght), one desk for a sewing table and a white table that holds the serger and misc. items, then have a small wall table that holds rulers, and notions and threads for the long arm. My husband has gotten a set of lights to put up that will lite up over the long arm and sewing machine, but needs to do some more wiring for them. This winter when things are slow we hope to get that done, as well as hanging the design wall, and putting up holders for the rolls of batting.
The only thing that I would change is to take out the carpet(though my toesy's stay warm in the winter) and use thro rugs where needed. |
A few yrs. ago we added on to our ranch home. With 3 daughters and 2 of them married, we needed a bigger dining area. So DH said I can have a bigger dining area but we are also going to add a full room to the basement as well. I said that was fine because that will be MY room. That is now my sewing and basket weaving room. It is 16x24. Love it.
|
My craft room/office is a 12 by 17 room that I share with my washer and dryer, furnace, water heater and water softener. I do have a closet which is crammed full, also a bookshelf full of quilting and genealogy books. I do my cutting on my dining room table. I am thankful to have my room, because I remember the time I had to use my kitchen table to sew and had to put everything away when it was time to feed my four children.
|
I have a separate building that will eventually be my office/workshop. There will be a small kitchen for making soaps, candles, and cheese, as well as snacks or light lunches.
My plans include a walk-in closet for fabric and other craft storage. A futon for relaxation and an impromptu nap. The office part will not require much space since I use a laptop. Hopefully, it will be solar/propane powered so I can still function during power outages. Also have plans to add a studio in the near future. |
I started out with my own room when we built the house. DH took half of it for CB radio. As sons moved out, I took over their bedrooms. Now I live alone and I have taken the Florida/rec room which is 15 ft. x 25 ft. I just close the door. I am in sewing heaven. I have my TV, phone extension, terrazzo floor for easy cleanup and big windows for light.
|
On the second floor of our house there's a 9x12 room off our bedroom that has windows on two walls that I now use as my sewing/quilting room. In our old house, I only had a corner of our bedroom to sew, and I had to pack everything up when I was finished for the day and lug it all back up to the attic. Sure lugging all the boxes of fabric, etc. up to the attic kept me in shape, but I sure don't miss it! I think about how much I love having my own sewing room every time I'm quilting and look across the CT river at the Green Mountains of Vermont.
|
I turned a small bedroom into my sewing room.
|
I finally moved my older son to the basement becasue I couldn't stand sewing in the "dungeon" any more. So I have a dedicated room. He is in the process of buying a house that has a perfect room for a longarm! :)

I sew in the corner of our sunroom. What used to be my sewing room now is the workroom for the longarm. All that fits in there is the machine and my stash.
I am a messy sewer. Is everyone neat? My sewing table is piled high with all my current projects. |
