Lucky enough to have an extra room strictly for my sewing stuff! Every so often when DH is working for the day, I will sew in the living room and watch movies.
I am taking over the family room!
My sewing "room" is a laptop stand next to my bunk. I am currently living in an rv. My cutting is usually done on the picnic table outside, depending on the weather and the wind. My dream is to actually find work back home so I can go home. Haven't been in my house for more than a day for nearly 2 years.
My sewing room is the larger half of my basement.

Every room except the bathroom. I sew in the living room, cut and press in the kitchen, store fabric etc in the spare room. House is not big so have to make do.
I have a dedicated sewing room on the first floor with walk in closet. I have my long arm in there along with sewing machine, embroidery machine and cutting table, dresser for fat qtrs etc, and 2 book shelves. also downstairs I have a sewing machine and 2 design walls and a large board ironing board. I also have this area set up for retreas and can have 8 quilters.
wish we had put in a walk out basement but oh well good excersize. |
Dining room table, don't have room for a sewing room
I use the dining room, and computer room to sew on electric machines. Kitchen to cut. The treadle is in the foyer and that's where I use it. I have fabric in the guest room closet and dresser, notions in the guest room closet and computer room. It is very frustrating not to have everything where I need it or remember where I put it. But, I don't want to give up the guest room because people are here often enough that I'd have to put away all my quilting stuff anyway.
I am lucky enough to have a spare room that I share with my husband. He has his grandmother old school desk set up where he ties flys for fly fishing. The rest of the room is mine, all mine. I have my cutting table set up all the time. Earlier this summer I installed shelving for all my stash. My sewing machine and seger are out and ready to sew at a moments notice. I love my space and I love the fact that it is upstairs out of the way.
Mine is in the basement also... My husband made me big cutting table with an area for my sewing machine.. work out really good...
I have the best husband in the world! He had a 28' x 28' sewing room (studio) added on to our house a little over a year ago. He got scared I would take over the whole house. LOL It was a total nightmare while it was being built, but that is another story. I am still trying to get things sorted out and situated. It has been difficult doing this with a new baby too.
I love my space though. It is right by the laundry room and a bathroom and not to far from the kitchen. I am trying to set up "stations" for my different crafts. I do scrap booking, sewing, and I have my quilt frame and my knitting machines. I am just doing a little at a time as time and money permit. Baby and diapers always come first. :-) |
  In the basement
  In one bedroom   In another room I need to clean up my act! :) |
We have a 10x10 laundry room. I have my own adjustable height table, cabinets mounted on the walls for my stash -a file cabinet, rolling drawer unit and book shelves. Tubs with more fabric are stored under the table and batting is stored over the washer and dryer. I like it because I can close the door. And then there is the dining room table and the front porch for quilting and then there is the bedroom .....
Mine is currently in the extra bedroom with my computer. My grandaughter is moving in there in November so the computer is moving to my bedroom and the quilting projects are moving to the dining room. Its currently a very pretty walk-on-by room so I will use it and to heck with the threads on everything. (Actually I would move my quilting to the garage to have my grandaughter here!)
We have four bedrooms and no children left at home so I turned one bedroom into a sewing room with cutting table and another one for my quilting frame and fabric stash. Somedays i wish it was all one large room, but this works and both rooms have closets for supplies.
i use my kitchen. there's no table in there cause i have a pond where the table should be but there is lots of counterspace to work on although i find it irritating when i'm cooking because my sewing stuff has taken over. it's the only kid free space in the house other than the basement but i find it too creepy down there.
When our son moved out to go to college years ago I then had a sewing room. So it's so nice to be able to leave a project out and not have to pick up.
Mine is in the dining room also. As soon as we get a quilting frame, I will move to the back den so I can make quilts and hubby can watch t.v.
I am lucky enough to have a family room in the basement. My husband says that the fabric is overtaking the space (it is sort of).
The lounge room.
I am a new beginner quilter..and just finished my first project..a wall quilt I call it "Autumn's End"..I am already soo addicted and overwhelmed by looking for my first real sewing machine I did my first project on my grandma's old Singer..any suggestions would be great!!!! both of my daughters are in college or out of the house soo my dining room is now my sewing room..I practically live there..lol
I have just moved my quilting from upstairs (my children were giving me a hard time about climbing the stairs) into my den. Except for my reclining chair and TV, did away with most of the den furniture, including dining table and two china cabinets. I
didn't use the den often when I have guests. I purchased two TV armoires that have five large drawers. Found them at a discount place that sells used hotel furniture., and along with my other storage cabinets, baskets, etc., I have a very workable quilting area. So what if someone comes in and sees the mess! "A creative person is never neat." |
I cut my fabrics on my kitchen counter/bar and have a card table set up with my sewing machine in a spare bedroom.

So seriously, does the family REALLY need to use the dining room table???? Oh I think not..... WE NEED IT AS A CUTTING TABLE PEOPLE..... figure it out....LOL
I have space in our downstairs family room however after the holidays I plan to move to a room I previously have used as my craft room. I no longer plan on doing crafts as I like to sew now. Nevertheless, I need to clean up both areas...fold lots of fabric, etc. Need to get the Christmas presents done first.

In my sewing, painting, craft and "whatever" room
i took my large heavy and sturdy wooden kitchen table and moved upstairs in a vacant bedrom ! courtesy of my son that moved out , i was sad for a long time because he moved ,but now that i have a large sewing room i am starting to get over it

You are indeed doing the right thing. So glad you brought up this aspect. This is more of an important issue than many of us know. Harriet Hargrave covers the electrical demands of the most commonly used items in our sewing area and says many of us are probably way under-amped to correctly protect our precious sewing machines and our home. This is especially true for our computerized machines. For example, the average iron today is rated at 1200 watts. She states that irons with that wattage alone require 10 amps and most bedrooms, living rooms and basements are wired for only 15 amps. Start adding all of your other equipment: sewing machine(s), lights, lamps, often times a computer, printer, maybe a stereo, TV... you get the picture. Those of you that are sewing at the table in your kitchen are likely doing so more safely than if you were in another room as kitchens are usually wired for 20 amps, giving you a little more available amperage to work with. Harriet goes on to suggest that we should at least consider setting up our iron in another room of your home on the opposite side of your quilting 'room', as often times adjacent rooms may be on the same circuit. Overloading your circuit can cause your lights to dim, or worse, cause your sewing machine to operate at less power or even worse. I've been using one of those travel irons in my sewing room as it is only rated at 600 watts, thus keeping my wattage use in a safe range. For more details, you can hire an electrician, perhaps query your electrical company, or, read all about it in Harriet's "Quilter's Academy Vol. 2 Sophomore Year - A Skill-Building Course in Quiltmaking". |
Dining room table. With an open floor plan it's kinda like being in the middle of the dining room, living room and kitchen at the same time. Waiting for DH to get my sewing cabinet built then I'm taking over DD's room -- she's at college, has her own apartment there.

I have two studios. We have a house in town where we spend most of our time, and then we have a house in the mountains about 40 minutes from here, where I have a huge loft area. I have both completely stocked but it never fails I will be needing something and it is at the other house. The loft is large so I have a Handiquilter there all set up but seldom use it because of my arthritis. I am hoping that when the thumb heals I can use it again.

I am so blessed. I have a very large house and I have sewing in one end of the basement. The opposite end I have a king size quilting frame for quilting. This room has 2 doors as the prior family used it as a BR. I built shelves on the outside walls and attempted neat stacks of fabric for insulation. I have a light attached to the machine carriage for extra light. I have a radio in this room.
In the sewing room I ran TV cable so I have TV and radio. I have an actual sewing machine cabinet but not the one that belongs to my Janome. Also have ironing board and separate table for cutting. I also built shelves in this room on the outside wall for fabric and supplies. Also keep an overstuffed chair for visitors as my husband has dementia and he comes and sits and watches TV sports and me sew. Then he is quiet and not demanding. No door on this area but it is the end of the baasement rec area and I have a pool table just outside my sewing area for laying out quilts. I started out 40 years ago in another house just behind the furnace in the basement with my machine and radio. I like to sew in the basement. |
It's after 3 AM and I have read every one's comments on where they sew Some of you are so blessed to have such large sewing areas and it fills all of us with envy.I've had five houses in my lifetime. The first was only a two bedroom and I sewed in the living room and stored my stash behind the bedroom door. When we moved my uncle said he didn't see how I got so much stuff behind there. Our second home was two story with large rooms but I didn't have a particular place to sew since it burned to the ground after six months.
We built another two story with very large rooms, and I had a 10x10 area in the upstairs hallway. Leaving that and moving to another town, I bought an old house that we remodeled from studs out, and I finally had a cutting place on the counter that I could walk around. My sewing room was 8x26 and DH built cabinets down one wall of this long hall way. I loved it since it connected to a bedroom that we had turned into a computer room where he stayed most of our free time. Leaving that behind I now live in a small 3 bedroom and have converted one bedroom into a computer room, sewing room. I have an ironing board set up in there where I sit my sewing machine, closet for stash and chest for fabric. I have a sewing cabinet, but the room isn't big enough to open out and have room to get into closet. Since we both have our own laptops I would really like to get rid of that huge computer cabinet, and make more room for sewing, but don't have the nerve. It does have three windows that give a lot of natural light, but for some reason he doesn't like the blinds open.My serger and extra sewing machine are setting on the floor under the sewing cabinet, so I can switch them out quickly when needed. I have a fold down table in the kitchen for cutting , that serves as a magazine rack of his Time magazine's that he seldom reads. But when I'm piecing a quilt, I bring a folding table into the living room and set my sewing machine on it so that I can listen to the TV and be in the same room as he. I find that I don't like being in the other room working alone. So I guess what it boils down too we each do what we have to do to survive this madness we call quilting. |

Where does everyone else work? I work in my sewing room (empty nester's original girls' bedroom). when I'm piecing, but all of the cutting and quilting is done on the dining table (also visible from the front). Once I pick everything up to use the table for it's original purpose, it's hard to get back to the sewing, so I try to leave it all out until I've finished my project. |
I have a sewing room , lots of storage , all my sewing machines on a specially built desks , cutting table on castors ,(very handy) big window for light , radio at my finger tips , lots of shelves on the wall filled with all my bits and bobs, it is my idea of heave and I just love it .

My quilting space is also our office so it's tight. I use folding tables when needed. Wishing for a dedicated room some day.
You keep on going it dose get better. IN the summer months my neighbors think I am strange as I drag my machine out to the front yard and sew most of the day. The winter machine is is electric, the summer one is a 1902 tredell that still works just fine.
I have a sewing room in the basement but find that I really like to be at the kitchen table so that's where I usually end up!
We have a finished basement and because my stash has grown so huge over this past year (I inherited someone's stash) I have pretty much taken over the space. My oldest daughter has a corner for her scrapbooking space, I have a scrapbooking space and a quilting space.
