I have a dedicated area at one end of the basement family room. But I am hoping to get a storage room converted one of these days to strictly a sewing studio.

Latrinka 10-27-2010 07:36 AM

We have an extra bedroom with just computer, my sewing machine, a card table, bookshelves for fabric, and a futon.

inletjerry 10-27-2010 07:58 AM

Have a spare bedroom, but it is so filled that I just have a path around my machine and cutting table, a small ironing station next to the machine. It is so full that I need to move something and I think it will be my machine. A quilting friend has volunteered to help me if I will just call her and say, "It's moving day!" Can't wait.

I have a guest bedroom that has a trundle bed, a small cutting/work table, my computer desk and my sewing machine table. It is pretty small, but the setup works well for me. I just have to swivel my chair to get from computer to machine to cutting table. Iron is on other side, but it is good to gt up once in awhile. When I have lots of cutting or squaring up to do, I do it on the dining room table.

RkayD 10-27-2010 10:53 AM

I have a dedicated sewing room...but I have too much stuff for the space. I end up on the dining table when I need the room.. Husband is threatening to turn the garage into a room just for me. Whoo Hoo! Sounds good to me!

costumegirl 10-27-2010 11:17 AM

Nance - I'm a dining room sewer too!! It has great natural light from 2 large windows and I can see my pretty Rose of Sharon bush. Yes clutter is every where and I have to clean up when we have the family come for dinner every Sunday but I won't give up this space for the dark, windowless basement.

katiebear1 10-27-2010 11:44 AM

I am lucky in that I have a seperate room for my "studio" It is a very large room (24x18) in my downstairs. I guess when the former owners finished the downstairs( my house is a what used to be called a bi-level) I think now the real estate term is (split foyer) La Di Dah :) Anyway, Instead of making 3 or 4 small rooms they made one large "den" with a fireplace and one large bedroom and a decent size laundrey/powder room. So when we bought it I claimed that bedroom as my "library" I LOVE to read. Put in floor to ceiling bookcases on two walls and a day bed at one end, The other end has a big doublle closet. When I started quilting I fixed up a corner for that using one bookshelf for my quilting stuff. My stash is confined to 4 large plastic totes that fit under the daybed. (that way I can keep it under control) LOL I have a TV w/dvd and a good radio so I am set! It is a very pleasant place where I can be by myself. The kids are grown and on their own so it is just hubby and me and our 4 doggie babies but it is nice that we can each have our own space. (DH took pver the smallest bedroom for an office and has all his computer stuff in there)

Two bedrooms that have been vacated by our grown sons!

Psychomomquilter 10-27-2010 01:36 PM

I am using my front bedroom for my sewing room

GloBug 10-27-2010 02:05 PM

I took the small bedroom for a sewing room when I moved in here. I'm a widow and can leave a mess without worry of anyone complaining.company comes all I do is close the door.My husband made cutting table for me it is 36X60 and 39" high as I'm quite tall.

dkabasketlady 10-27-2010 03:44 PM

I use one of the extra bedrooms and have the bed taken apart, but propped against the wall(so it does use some of my space). I'm thankful for what I have, but at the same time I'm envious of everyone that has a STUDIO!!

Beginner64 10-27-2010 04:01 PM

Well I guess I'm the lucky one now. My DW and I will be moving into our new house (new to us anyway) next month. I will have a sewing room just off the living room that is about 12x14 with a lot of windows to bring in light. It will take me a while but eventually I will have all the cabinets and counter space and a cutting table in the middle that we all want to have. I'm so excited I can't get it out of my mind even to sleep at night. Will post pictures of it as I progress through the project.

sylvia77 10-27-2010 04:26 PM

My sewing room is one of the spare bedrooms upstairs. I use to use a room off the basement but I gave that to my grand kids to sleep in when they stay over.

When I married my husband 8 years ago, we started looking for a house with a large enough space for a longarm machine. The house we bought was 3 bedroom with a large livingroom just off the front hall, which would serve perfectly as a quilting room. I set up my sewing table with my Bernina and my serger, and when we bought the longarm, it was set up in that room. Then a few years later I realized I needed a large cutting table, and I also bought 2 commercial sewing machies, so I took the master bedroom for that. We moved into the second bedroom, which is pretty small. The third "bedroom" had built-in cupboards which served perfectly for all my stash. Our "den" became the living room and it all worked fine. Then last year my hubby decided to build on a new sewing/quilting room! It is almost 500 square feet and has its own 1/2 bath. So he tells people he got his livingroom and his master bedroom back. But, seriously, I really am blessed to have this space and I'm very thankful for a husband who enables my quilting habit! Of course, my business is paying some of the bills, so he can go fishing more! My avatar shows me in the old quilting room with the Bernina behind me. :)

What used to be the dining room. We live in an old house, the dining room is attached to the old living room. 30 yrs ago we used it as a dining room and I sewed up in the hall room. The kids came along, the dining room became the toy room, I moved my sewing stuff to our bedroom, which was part of the new addition. The addition enlarged the kitchen, so we 'ate' in it, and the old dining room was used to whelp litters of pups. Then the accident, my life as a breeder is no more, and my dearest husband turned what used to be a dining room to a sewing room. The whole room. I sewed my first project in the room today, a sewing machine cover.

LOL! I expect most of us have moved our sewing area several times for different reasons! One friend has moved hers upstairs and then downstairs several times! She has a beautiful "bonus room" up there, but now her health prevents her from climbing the stairs!
For us, there was a sun room on the back of the house which served as a dining room, just off the kitchen. That is still our every-day eating room, but the "den" will soon become our formal dining room. I'm dizzy, trying to figure out all this!! It's something like Trading Spaces!

Maybe1day 10-27-2010 08:07 PM

Well I would normally be saying I work at the kitchen table when at home otherwise I only sew when I go out to craft group however, about a week ago I got so fed up with having to pack and unpack all my sewing bits’ pieces when I wanted to sew that I set up a corner for sewing in our ‘house under construction’ and have been sewing out there. The house building project is on hold till next April so thought why not? I will have a designated sewing room in the main house having incorporated this into the house plans from the word go.

The attic is my whole sewing room.

Farm Quilter 10-27-2010 09:26 PM

I have the largest room in my house - a bedroom upstairs with 2 walk-in closets. Fits my 6' cutting table, 2 4'x8' bookcases, gate-leg table with my Janome, ironing board, my Elna on it's sewing table and my longarm Innova 18" on a 12' frame. I still have room to walk around!

I started out almost 3 years ago with my DH's Singer on a dining chair while I sat on my recliner, moved to the dining room table, then to a corner of the living room. When I bought my longarm, I moved my guest room to a smaller bedroom and snagged the big one for myself, moved everything upstairs.

I know, I'm spoiled!!!

KiwiQuilter 10-27-2010 11:17 PM

I use 4 rooms.

My office is where I store my fabric, rulers, notions and WIPs. They are kept inside 4 large plastic containers.

My dining room - when I usually cut fabric, and baste.

My spare room - houses my sewing machine inside a sewing cabinet. The cabinet looks like furniture when folded up. Sometimes I move the cabinet into the lounge - depends on the project.

The lounge - where you'll find me hand quilting, and attaching the binding :)

OOOHHHHH, I like the way you put that. You are so right, I am very well kept, cared for, loved and blessed!!! So, why am I thinking about knocking out the wall between my quilting loft and DSD's room now that she has gone off to college and making my room even larger??????????? Perhaps I best just make more quilts and my storage issue would take care of it self!

GailG 10-28-2010 11:19 AM

Well, it happened this morning!! There I was trying to finish up the machine work on a quilt so I could get to the binding. Still dressed in my nightie, barefoot, and hair uncombed. Yikes what a sight! My friend dropped in ON HER WAY TO THE BEAUTY SHOP. I was so surprised (and so embarassed, but I just invited her in, showed her what I was doing. (She's the friend I would like to get hooked on quilting.) She only stayed a minute and she was off to get pretty. I contnued my work and am now showered, hair done, and the quilt is ready for binding. :o)

Mariposa 10-28-2010 12:53 PM

I have a sewing room just off a living room. Has 2 big tables, and some shelves and a tall cabinet for storage. Plus some big windows.
I have a bedroom downstairs that I have a quilting machine set up in. Works great!

I work off a tray table in our motorhome. It's an older model without pull-outs & has no space. The tray takes up the entire aisle & DH says he needs a couple of months off from being cut off from the door/facilities all the time. I don't sleep much, so guess the next few quilts & projects will have to be stitched only during the night. Someday....
aahhhhh!! I can dream! :-)

dgsmom 10-28-2010 01:30 PM

when i'm at home i have a spare bedroom set up. when i'm in our motorhome i do all my sewing at the table. nothing like putting a king size quilt together in a 8' wide space.

CircleSquare 10-28-2010 09:47 PM

I once lived in a 9 foot camper for 3 months! It was torture! No room to sew or quilt or anything!

Aahhhhhhhhhhhhh!! I remember those days. We lived in a RV for nearly two years along with a dog. There was so little room but I still spent time crocheting and sewing. We weren't small people , so you can imagine how tight we were. DH sat at the table most all of the time and I set on the couch with my feet on it too so that he and the dog could pass by going to the door. My heart goes out to you. I hope you are in a warm place, we spent two winters in it and nearly froze. Hope things get better for you soon.

Becky Crafts 10-30-2010 03:07 AM

Thank you Irene. We've lived in our Motorhome 11 yrs in Florida after selling home in New England. Love Florida..not so much motorhome living. Claustrophobic. I used to sew outside with my old machine, but this newer computerized one said not to & I am rather protective of it. We have no couch. Bird cage replaced it. Only have two chairs & the teensy doll sized table my lap top is on. At mealtime, we put potholders/towels over the lap tops & eat on top of them. I have to stand in the wheel well or try to stuff my feet under my chair while my DH walks by. LOL!
My stovetop has a metal cover & though tiny, is only flat spot. I put my cutting mat there to cut. Ironing board is up & down so we can use the facilities. Must iron from one end only when it's up. LOL! I've been blessed in many other ways. Eventually, I'm sure it will get better. If not, I'll work around it! :-)

:-) It's our obsession - we just crave more and more! The more we get, the more we want - whether stash, machines, space, etc.
I am another one who is "well-kept" or "well blessed" and I am so thankful for an understanding man! (Of course, if you could see his 2 garages, you would know he is the same way with his tools and his "stuff.") :P

I am stuck up in the attic. Hot in the summer, freezing in the winter.

So you quilt naked in the summer and in thermals in the winter, right?

I am also on the top floor of my house, south facing windows, gets up to 110 in the summer up there (at 100 I have to head downstairs) and it's cold in the winter but I have an electric wall heater that is very efficient! Hard to quilt when your fingers are frozen!!!

lol Our summers are not that hot, so not quite naked. More of hats, scarves and fingerless gloves in the winter. Not much quilting gets done, but lots of planning, sorting, and bagging of projects.

right now it's my Dining room. We've got an extra bedroom, but it's got all of my 23 yr olds stuff in it along with some of dh's junk. They've been promising for 2 years to get it cleaned out, and more so since she graduated college last May of this year. I'm still waiting!

Bill'sBonBon 10-31-2010 03:51 PM

I am one of the lucky ones.. When we moved here from FL. this house had a screen in Front Porch, I knew I would never really use it because we also have a Patio area, So my DH closed it in for me a sewing room. It has its own entrance so I actually have 2 front doors, :-D. It has a door going into my living room so I can close myself off completely. I forgot its size DH just informed it is abt. 12'by 18' Give or take an inch or so either way. BillsBonBon

Debbie B 10-31-2010 05:44 PM

That's exactly my problem! My son is 24 and lives & works in West Virginia (been out of the house for 4 - 5 yrs), but he still has stuff stored in his room. He has everything from hunting & kayaking stuff to guitars & lots of cd's and books. I need room for my quilting stuff & sewing machines in there. Not to mention there's also two dog crates & an inversion table in the room. I was just complaining to my DH that when I talk with my DS I will be telling him to either take most of the stuff with him or donate it. I need to clean & organize! Thanks for let me vent.
