I actually have my own craft room now that the kids are all grown up, but since my GD has come in to my life it stays cleaner than usual so that she can enjoy my space also. In the summer it is one of the cooler rooms and it seems that we end up there more and more. Pretty messy right now as I am working on Christmas cards and another hankerchief quilt.

My "sewing Room" is the 2nd bedroom in a very small mobile home. Barely 8 by 12, with a twin bed, it doubles as the guest room....When that happens I have to pack up whatever I have out and stow it in the closet. I have my stash in rubbermaid totes in the closet....I hate guests....

The smallest of our three bedrooms.

Ladies, a tip... if you buy the folding tables for cutting or pinning quilts, add risers to the legs. Some use a PVC pipe, have hubby help you decide how high is comfortable for you so you save your back... some also use a fence post with a little drilled in hole to catch the leg. I like PVC as I can take them with to a class and give a 'lift' to a table for everyone to use on cutting.

They also have smaller tables to buy, especially Sam's Club, and you could put risers on those in a bedroom...of course they have those nice high cutting tables with fold down leaves, nice to get out of the way after your initial fabric cutting, I got one with a JoAnn coupon, also my craft table with JoAnn's coupons when they used to have 50%, seems now it's all 40%, economy hitting everyone.

Then we have an apartment where my husband works, and I have a couple smaller tables that collapse from WM, perfect as they also height adjust just right for sewing machine level (again, save that back & shoulders from strain).

The Avg. quilter only gets in 3 hrs because of improper height to machine (sitting) or cutting (standing)..your iron board adjusts height. It's important to have 'tools' even surfaces that adjust if your 5'2" or 5'10", if your body is comfortable, you can spend all day quilting, more productive, less pain at the end. I can quilt easily a 12-16 hr day..often forget meals until 4:00pm for a breakfast/lunch...9-10:00pm for a supper...just get so caught up in quilting or projects, forget meals since I'm alone 99% of the time. Hubby works 4 hrs from here, oil field, so not home much.

Has anyone tried those irons that have a push down, pops up on a stem/leg so you don't have to 'stand it up' on it's end? Can't think of the name just now...curious what you think of it if you have one or know someone.

My sewing area is in my dining room - a good friend of mine helped me install the shelving and curtain. Materials cost under $100. I love it! Of course, it doesn't usually look this neat...

Chrys 10-26-2010 05:25 AM

I took over the family room for my studio/sewing room. I have many years to wait before I can move upstairs to one of the boys rooms. But that's ok. I like being in the heart of the house. :)

MaggieLou 10-26-2010 05:27 AM

Mine is the sunroom. I have windows on three sides so I get great natural light. It's off the living room but I have sheers across the opening I can close to kind of hid the clutter.

1rottendog 10-26-2010 05:39 AM

I have a folding table set up in the back window of our 5th wheel with a 3-drawer plastic set of drawers for extra table space. My fabric stash is under the bed and WIP are stored in craft bins. Every time someone comes to visit, the stuff gets hauled up to the bed. We host for Oregon State Parks but we get to settle for a couple of months at a time. But we're thinking of moving back to Arizona and that is two musts for the new house -- a sewing room big enough so that I can find things and a door to close.

Tudey 10-26-2010 05:40 AM

I am blessed to have a whole room for my sewing! It's a little small, but it's MINE!

stevendebbie25 10-26-2010 05:45 AM

My daughter has an older house with an upstairs sunrm, and it's her sewing studio, she designs clothes, and off of it is their TV rm, but they also have their living rm (TV)downstairs, no kids yet, they have the nursery ready & a guest rm, nice big old house..working on remodels and repairs for the old place.
The other daughter 'curtained' off a 1/4 of her bedrm for sewing/crafts, and totes in their closet. She has a nice home, but 4 kids and no basement, no spare space.

We have an apartment where my husband works (double expenses, oil field town and our home here). When I'm there, we have a spare bedrm, but it has a q bed and no extra space except I store in the closet..yes, even things up there now. I sew at one end of the dining tble, and have a folding table beside me too. I know both ends... spare bedrm as my home sewing rm, kitchen at the apartment...raising our 5 kids in a 3 bedrm, I sewn on the dining tble also, and after they went to bed, until 2-3am, night owl.

We appreciate what we gain from what we've survived... and we dream, always nice to dream too.

mollygirl 10-26-2010 05:53 AM

It is just me and my husband so we have an extra bedroom that I turned into my sewing room. I have my cutting table open all the time.

mhansen6 10-26-2010 06:20 AM

I have a wonderful sewing room. When we bought the house it was a hot tub room. But we are not hot tub people. So my husband wanted a shop/garage for all his toys and I agreed if I could also remodel the hot tub room into a sewing room. It has windows on two sides and I have a lot of natural light. It has a sliding glass door onto the deck so I can open it and get fresh air. I just love working out there.

tall2 10-26-2010 06:40 AM

Its a 3rd bedroom for me, but i share it with the computer, books, and sewing supplies. Bookcases for the books the room has 2 closets--one is for the fabric, not sure whats in the other one off hand, might be art supplies. I use 2- 4 foot tables- end to end (in the corner) for puter and printer. Then I have my sewing machines- in the bookcases and one on the table, with the iron beside it. Yes, I know Im lazy, but also have a back fusion that makes me want to stay down when i can. I do most of my cutting on a table in the kitchen,as well as ironing the fabric there also. Its a metal table 38inches tall. I made a cover for it with that ironing fabric and used (awe crap I forgot)for the padding, but it works great. I usaully use my larger cutting mat over the iron surface, and if i need touch ups to fabric, theres space for it.

I work in my room. It is 21' x 11' feet, but with a king-sized quilter, a 7'x3' cutting table at one end and my bed and other stuff at the other, it is rather crowded. I have paths going from one area to another, but I love it. it's my little space.

sheila bee 10-26-2010 07:03 AM

I have a converted garage...now my car is outside..!!!!

neonparrot 10-26-2010 07:25 AM

Well, I lucked out. There are 3 huge rooms upstairs...our bedroom, my dh's office/room and my sewing room (plus bathroom). Mine used to have a hot tub in it, so it is ceramic tiled with big windows overlooking the lake. It is about 25X30 feet and all mine. Huge closets at one end with sliding doors we filled with white wire shelves. Down the center are 3 36x66" long tables for cutting, etc. I have 8 machines but I want to sell my Designer 1, as I just don't use it much anymore. This room is a sewers dream and guess where I spend all my tiime?

Beginner girl 10-26-2010 07:32 AM

Hi. When we retired we went from a 4 bdrm to 2 bdrm and a condo instead of a house. I have only half the space I did before so my guest bedroom is my work room plus my computer room. I have my quilting things all over but am slowly organizing so it looks neater. As for now, I just close my door. Not giving up quilting because of space. I feel that if someone should see the room, it is cluttered for a good reason and if they don't like it, then please don't come visit....aren't I cruel.
Jean (a beginner)

Sounds wonderful. I envy you for the space.

leiladylei54 10-26-2010 07:50 AM

We live in a "servants" quarters and so there are two bedrooms only. Now that we are empty nesters, I use the "guest room" as my arts and crafts room. But 'tis small but works in most cases. How I envy everyone's talk about their basement....Hawaii....no such things as a basement or you'd hit a geyser (actually ocean water). LOL

catrancher 10-26-2010 08:03 AM

I have a large space in the basement. Love the room. Hate that it doesn't have any windows.

I'm in my kitchen, but have one of those desk/shelf combos from Ikea... I still use the kitchen table for cutting. I've already told my husband that when we move, I need to have a space just for my sewing, lol!

jdavis 10-26-2010 08:16 AM

I work in a number of spaces. My supplies are mostly in "the back room, " along with my sewing machine table. I do my cutting on the kitchen table. I prop up my 4' x 4' design wall on the humidifier in the living room. When I'm working on a whole quilt, I move the sewing table to the living room because the back room is too cramped (and dusty). The living room is rarely used except for the holidays, so there's always something "staged for storage" in there. I take over the room as needed; with the understanding that I will clear out for the holidays. Some day when my son moves out, I will take over his bed room!!!!

happymrs 10-26-2010 08:17 AM

Lucky me, I have actually taken over the two small extra bdrms here. One is my is my studio & strictly that. The other, no bed in it now either, now has machine quilter frame in it, so am gradually taking over it too. Hubby would like to remove the wall between them, but as slow as he is about remodeling, I prefer to just leave it as is. At least I can use the space I have, & I love it!

jbj137 10-26-2010 08:25 AM

In the 3rd bedroom, but
the Hinterberg frame is
set up in the living room
in front of the big window.

When we moved into our house 2 1/2 yrs ago I got the formal living room for my quilting space. We put a couch in it and entertainment center as well. Since then the couch and entertainment center have gone bye bye so I can fit in my new LA machine and the room will soon be called a quilting studio instead of the "sewing room". We hope to put up french doors to close the room off shortly since it's the 1st thing you see when coming in the front door.

patdesign 10-26-2010 08:36 AM

Now that I am an empty nester, with 4 bedrooms, one is the office, one a guest, the master of course and last but not least I converted the second guest room into my very own sewing room. It is jam packed and organized or I wouldn't be able to find a thing. I also teach sewing lessons from that room so it has to stay CLEAN. Will try to get dh to photo and post the room.

klgreene 10-26-2010 08:41 AM

I've devided...I have a spare bedroom, but it still have the bed in it and it's small, so the sewing machine and ironing board are in there. And I use my card table in the computer room to cut. So I am constantly going back and forth from room to room. I'd like to knock the wall out between the rooms, but not going to be able to do that.

jdeery 10-26-2010 08:52 AM

Right now I am sewing in my "dinning room that once was".
Once upon a time I had a dinning room, then two little people came into my life and it became a playroom, then the big guy said "oh, the computer will go well in there", so
then it became a computer room, then when the little people
got a little bigger, a piano came in the picture, my poor
little sewing area...squeezed into the corner of my once was
dinning room". Now there are two little people again and one on the way, plus the two bigger ones, that never left. And the big guy, my poor sewing area is in captivity
under lots of stuff.....
Sew on, and Sew on....

laughingquilter 10-26-2010 08:55 AM

I have a room that houses my quilting (complete with requisite TV and rocking chair), my scrapbooking and my computer............it's a large room - but still not big enough! A friend helped me build a countertop set-up so I have counterheight cutting space - he also fashioned a fold down ironing surface. I feel so blessed - I love my room!

The bedroom has big closet, 1/2 with shelves, some I hang fabrics on hangers for specific projects. Enough room I have an old heavy legal office desk, perfect, no bounce on machines, drawers for supplies, and two pull out side wings, one has iron, the other cutting. Then those tall fold out cutting tables for beginning cutting. A craft table for more supplies, my computer printer is there too.
A book shelf for all the DVDs, books, and I take patterns out of magazines and put them in sleeves in 3-ring binders in catagories (baby, floral, holiday, table runners, etc).
I have a smaller folding table in front of a closet door I keep a quilt machine on, and have my embroidery machine (much bigger) on the desk, keeping both humming at once. I have 2 good windows E & S for light, a couple table clamp lights (sewing & cutting tble), and the iron board set up in front of the printer. A tad crowded, but it's working great. This isn't the largest or smallest bedroom. I have a tiny rm with a twin & lots of toddler toys for a couple grandchildren, and a med rm with full bed set for guests. I've spilled into that closet & dresser with prearranged projects. Really need to get more UFOs done..but each class starts another UFO, and I love to keep learning.

If you can dedicate any space in the home, just to quilting, a corner in a room, have hubby build legs over plywood resting ontop a guest bed for more surface (cover the bed with a sheet protection). Most important, organize, and good light.

Sounds great, any possibility of us seeing photos? I seem to be organizationally challenged, my space is a " mess magnet"

My bedroom and bath, both quite small, are the only rooms that are not my sewing space. Unfortunately the only wall large enough for a decent design wall is in the bedroom, so that will going up as soon as the Military Barracks Quilts Project is more manageable and then I'll truly be living in my studio. :?

Want to see some pictures of it? These were taken before I moved in. Sure wish it were still this neat!!

So he said I could probably use that as a bigger sewing rm next. Then when the other half the basement is finished, we really don't need another family rm, so that could be my sewing rm, and it be about as nice as the garage, just no windows down there (man cave has 1 egress window), and I like natural light, being able to look outside at the flowers. Still, a bigger room would very much be appreciated no matter where. Yes, we had a very tiny home raising 5 children in 3 bedrooms for 25 yrs, bought a much bigger older home now, but when the kids come home for holidays, they've multiplied! We need more room now then as children, even when they aren't here all the time. I used to sew on the kitchen table and stash in my bedrm closet too. Some downsize, we upsized..more stairs and work as I get older, but still love the place. Photos added to share. My husband has built this place from a gutted to studs shell, 3 yrs ago it was weeds to the windows, it's come a long way.

WOW! With those beautiful views how do you come inside to get any sewing done?

I live in a 100-year old house where all the rooms open into each other. I sew in a room between the two most popular rooms in the house...the TV room and the kitchen! But I like being close to both rooms and DH is usually in one or the other of those rooms! He'll be moving his hobby stuff out soon so I can have the whole room for sewing. (He has a whole building to himself, but I'm not jealous, not much anyway.)

I'm trying to use vintage furniture but will soon have some shelves built in and I have a nice-size closet. My machine is on an Ikea desk in a corner and I cut on a vintage table set up on bed risers....but I'm hoping to replace them and make a big investment soon...the table in the pic below. It can function as both sewing and cutting table. I think I'll like the height.

Basement... I have a little corner space in the room that we finished. I share it with DH's desk/computer and the kids play area. That way we can all be together if we wish.

I took over our daughter's room when she graduated from college - in 1986 and it is truly all sewing. It had a bed in it for a while, but we no longer consider it to be a guest room. Too many pins in the carpet.
Last year we did a make over when the college discarded lab benches and glass front cupboards from the Physics lab. Lots of wonderful storage for me, but I am starting to leak out into the hall. Think I need to perform some stash reduction - in other words get busy and sew.

ka9sdn 10-26-2010 10:28 AM

I started out in my eldest sons room when he left home then moved to my youngest sons room when he left as it was bigger. Now my DH has made me my own room 16 x 32 in the second floor of our barn shaped garage. It is great. I have all my machunes, computer, longarm and tables there--my hideaway!

PattyJean 10-26-2010 11:12 AM

Have everything set up in my large master bedroom in front of large windows that look out into the backyard where I often see deer. Sooooo peaceful!

quilting grqmmy 10-26-2010 11:28 AM

i am very lucky. my husband gave me 2/3 s of the attached garage. my finished area is 20 x 20 feet with 10 ft. celings. he bilt a large area for my fabric. it is 18 ft. long and 10 ft. tall and 4 ft. deep. it is packed full of fabric and have fabric in baxes on the floor. i will never live long enough to use all the fabric.....but.....you see i can not help my self. i must buy fabric and books. i have about 700 quilting books and magazines.

imjustme 10-26-2010 11:35 AM

I migrate from the bedroom, to the kitchen, and the livingroom. It's exhausting lol
