I prefer single fold binding so I usually cut anywhere from 1.5 to 2 inches. If I'm doing French Fold Binding, I use about 2.5-3"
It depends on a couple of things:
1. The size of the project. For small projects I prefer 2.25 but for a large quilt probably 2.5. 2. The amount of fabric I have to bind. Sometimes it has to be narrower in order to use the color I want without another trip to the store. |
2 1/2 inches.
2 1/2 unless it is a small quilt. then 2.
Mine is always 2-1/4", but batting thicknesses would have to be considered I think. I mostly use Warm and Natural.
2.5, works great for me.
I actually cut it 2 3/4" sometimes and move my needle 1 stop to make a wider 1/4" seam. The finished binding is the same width. I did it a couple times to hide my oops on the edge and liked it a lot so I've done it that way a few times now. I still use 2 1/2" sometimes, but never narrower.

I cut at 2.5" and fold in half. I Sew it onto the front by machine using a 1/4" foot and whip it down on the back by hand. I enjoy hand work and I love the clean look of the binding with no visible stitching:-)
I cut my binding 2 3/4 inches wide, press in half.
Machine stitch to the front with my walking foot, turn and hand stitch to the back. |
2 1/2" - also fold to make it double.
