With or without yellow roses - your advice please

Below is the block I made for my stitchin sister exchange. My person's block was anything TX. I digitized this block and paper pieced the flying geese. The question is, do you think I should also add the fabric yellow roses or leave it alone? If adding roses, which placement do you like best?

Thanks for looking.

kristakz 08-20-2012 06:36 PM

The block is lovely, without the roses. But they do add a nice punch of colour (helpful, right? :) ) If you add them, I like the second layout best. It looks like they are supported by the flag stand that way.

Edited to add: 3rd picture. Second layout with roses. I like the 2 on top and 3 clustered in the lower left.

Tartan 08-20-2012 06:39 PM

I like the clean lines of the original design without the roses.

Patti25314 08-20-2012 06:54 PM

What about one yellow rose in the star in the middle of the state?

DebraK 08-20-2012 07:02 PM

without roses

kathdavis 08-20-2012 07:04 PM

No flowers. I like it without.

Good idea except it would cover up my bluebonnets - u probably can't see them in the pic.

nativetexan 08-20-2012 07:09 PM

oh gosh, perhaps the first one without them is best. if not, the last placement would work all right. so cute though!!
no body remembers The Yellow Rose of Texas song. of course, I do!

Dina 08-20-2012 07:14 PM

Oh, don't cover up the bluebonnets!! :) I vote for leaving the rose off. Your stitchin sister is going to love this!

Dina

It's THE yellow rose of Texas, so I'd see how just one looks - maybe at the top left corner of the support. And add a little green leaf or two. Are the three smaller ones separate - maybe one of them??

I agree - just one in the upper left would give it the "pop" you mentioned.
I so love it without as well.

Aren't we helpful? LOL

Crqltr 08-20-2012 07:26 PM

I like it with out, or my second choice would be just one....feeling more mixed up now??

quiltsRfun 08-20-2012 08:46 PM

I'd put three in the lower right corner and omit the other two.

Melrose R 08-20-2012 09:34 PM

I prefer it with no roses. If I had to pick, I'd go with the last photo.

ArtsyOne 08-21-2012 02:53 AM

I do like the punch of color that the rose adds. Have you thought about putting one rose inside the circle at the top right corner? It would like framed that way.

DOTTYMO 08-21-2012 03:02 AM

Prefer no roses.if you want colour one rose top left corner only. 3 together definitely too many.

scrappingfaye58 08-21-2012 03:05 AM

I love the block...but not the roses... Very nice work!

hopetoquilt 08-21-2012 03:10 AM

Did you make the roses?i love them. However, I would prefer your block without the roses. Would love to know how you made them

RonieM 08-21-2012 03:33 AM

Skip the roses. It is great the way it is.

i agree with this one. and the song came into my mind the first thing i saw the pics... and i've never even been to tx!

chips88 08-21-2012 03:53 AM

i like the second picture with the 3 bunch roses to the right as you are looking at it... leave the 2 off the top..

orangeroom 08-21-2012 03:56 AM

Nice job. My vote is the first one without the yellow roses.

Ditto! I would not use the roses. It's a beautiful block. Perhaps another block could be for the yellow rose of Texas.

liont 08-21-2012 04:34 AM

I would put one rose or one cluster of roses in a corner of the main emblem. The rose is meant to be a symbol, not to interfere too much with the overall structure. JMHO.

northerncreations 08-21-2012 05:22 AM

Without....I vote for leaving the rose(s) off. Can't wait to hear how pleased your stitchin sister is when she receives it.

Delta 08-21-2012 05:25 AM

Love the block, don't care for the roses on it. there just doesn't seem to be a place for them.

susie-susie-susie 08-21-2012 05:30 AM

My vote is to leave the roses off. The block is great just the way it is. I'm sure your quilting sister will love it no matter what you decide.

You have created a fantastic block!!! As others have said, the addition of the yellow is a good thing and the roses do look nice but your original plain block is also great on its own. Have you considered appliqueing a yellow rose? You might have a piece of fabric in your stash with a yellow rose on it that you could carefully cut and applique. I like the dimension of the roses you've added but depending on what she does with this block that will either be a good thing or maybe not. Whatever you decide, she will surely LOVE this block!

ShowMama 08-21-2012 05:46 AM

I am a born and bred Texas girl and the yellow rose is one of my absolute favorite flowers. However, for your question, I like the plain block without the roses best. I like things simple and am often of the opinion that "less is more". I personally think the roses detract from the rest of the block. But that's just my opinion.

SandScraps 08-21-2012 05:48 AM

How about putting the roses in the four corner squares of the border?

bigsister63 08-21-2012 05:56 AM

No roses!!!!

bearisgray 08-21-2012 05:59 AM

The roses seem to be distracting.

Annie68 08-21-2012 06:05 AM

Without looks much better.

Very helpful as I had not thought of just ONE...lol. I will let you all know what the stitchin sisters say tonight! Thanks for all the feedback!

Peepers 08-21-2012 06:22 AM

I like the idea of a couple of other replies of taking the two roses off the top and leaving the cluster of three at either the left or right bottom corner. I know from watching decorating shows that groups of 3 are more pleasing to the eye for some reason. If you have the time, try setting it up in a room you don't go into all the time, walk away for at least an hour, walk back in and look at it then repeat for a couple more set-ups. You'll know which one you like best after you take a break from it. (By the way, thanks alot! The song will be in my mind all day!:p)

How about 1 tiny rose marking the city where she lives?

Great idea but the star interferes as Dallas/Ft. Worth would be right on the satin stitching. Wish I had thought of this before hand...lol.

Going to put this in the kitchen today just to look as I pass in and out! I know what you mean about the song....sorry.

cmw0829 08-21-2012 06:38 AM

I also prefer no roses - "less is more" as they say. If you want roses, I like the first one with the roses on each upper corner with roses in the lower right as it balances the curlicue in the upper left corner.

NOW...please tell us what you mean by "digitized"? Thanks a lot, Cathy

joyce888 08-21-2012 06:39 AM

I think the block is great without roses but #3 if you're going to add them.
