Not a purist. Will use what I can find. I remember one of my quilts that my Grandmother made completely out of polyester and I loved it, so she taught me you can use just about anything.

Only cotton fabric and cotton thread for me. I will use polyester batting when I make a utility quilt for kids but cotton for all my other quilts. Hand piece and piece with treadle only and then hand quilt. I am going to try and quilt with one of my treadles, this will be my first machine quilting. glenn

I sure like cotton/natural everything, but if the spool of thread matches and it's poly, I'll use it. I like to use things that I have. Then I can buy more natural stuff! My machine loves cotton thread too. She can get a little uppity with the poly thread, but it still works out. I'd hate to discourage anyone from using what they already have. It usually works out fine and you're not wasting. When you run out buy what you can afford. Quilting is such a fun hobby, but it doesn't have to be so expensive.

I am definitely NOT a purist. I use whatever material I like and can get my hands on. Definitely am a low budget quilter, but there are some poly fabrics I hate to use for quilting. I use poly batting for most of my quilts because it is affordable for me, but I do love cotton batting and buy some here and there for kitchen items that I quilt like potholders, placemats, table runners, etc. I also like to use it for wall quilts. As far as thread goes- I use what matches!

I came at quilting as a way to use up scraps, at first, so I used anything. I still prefer to use what I have on hand. But when I buy new fabric and batting, I buy cotton.

For thread, I use poly-blend threads a lot. Sometimes cotton machine quilting thread. I was recently given a huge box of thread, and most of it isn't cotton, so that will be what i use for the foreseeable future.

For batting, I prefer cotton but have used a lot of polyester (My first quilts were poly, because I didn't even know cotton batting existed. The place I bought batting at didn't carry cotton.) I have a lot of polyester batting that was, again, given to me, so for baby quilts and charity quilts, that's what I'll be using until it's gone.

I guess I am not a purist....for the most part I do use cotton everything ...but I will use minky for some backings....wool in some quilts for battings ...but for the most part I do use cotton thread..I just like cotton thread the best. I don't have any material for my tops except cotton...only because I live in a small town with a local quilt shop...if I had a shop that offered otehr textiles I would probably experiment more.

Im not at all! I learned from EX-MIL who grew up during the Depression. And she could quilt! It seemed like she could take any cloth and make it beautiful!
I buy alot of my thread at garage sales, but never got too lucky finding fabric at any!

As a general rule, I do use only 100% cotton. When I shop that is what I shop for. That said, if I cannot find a 100% cotton fabric I will not turn away the perfect one because it has a bit of poly in it. I have also made texture quilts that have a bit of everything in them, and used fleece for the back of a couple of quilts.
