I have years of magazines. Sometimes I will see a quilt I like and will look through the magazines at night while DH is watching a dumb movie and find the pattern that I could use for that quilt. Most of the quilts (even modern) are using traditional blocks. I use the magazines as information sources, kind of like encyclopedias (remember those?).

I don't subscribe to many since some of the magazines have a block but you have to buy the pattern anyway. I have enough paper and other magazines. I have recently gone on the internet and canceled the paper magazines but subscribe to online magazines. I hate paying the price of magazines when internet is much cheaper and as some call it saving a tree. I checkout the library and thrift stores and estate sales. I got a couple quilt books and I have probably 20 books and magazines and paid no more than a dollar for each.

magazines don't print the patterns for the complicated type of quilts I like. I quit buying mags clear back in 1996

I got 5 grocery sacks full for a dollar at an estate sale last month which have been both fun and horrifying to go through. That is away from this thread though, so I'll just say never.

I have made a few quilts from patterns I found in the Quiltmaker magazine. When I do buy a quilting magazine there is usually a pattern or two that have caught my eye. What I have done to reduce my pile of magazines is to remove the patterns I feel I would want to make at a later point in time and placed them in binders. Now if I need an idea for a baby quilt, lap quilt, etc. I check my binders first. lol ..... I also have a huge file folder on my computer with pdfs.

I have made 3-4 quilts from magazine patterns. After looking through a magazine, I mark any that I think I seroiusly want to make and keep that magazine. If there is nothing in it that appeals to me (which is often the case) I get rid of the magazine! Periodically I flip through the kept magazines to remind me of what's there, and sometimes the pattern I originally marked no longer appeals to me so I get rid of that one too! This way I don't have piles of magazines sitting around.

I have made more projects from magazines than from the many books I have or patterns bought.

I have made many things from patterns in magazines over the years. I have enjoyed magazines and have a couple of subscriptions. But, I am in the process of giving away 20 years worth of magazines. They not only take up space (8 banker boxes) but it would be daunting to look back through them. Besides, there are lots of new fun ideas to try.

I borrow from the library. very rarely do I do something from a magazine about once every other year.

I impulsively buy quilt magazines, but rarely make anything from them. I think I will, but I don't. Reading this thread, I realize what a waste of money, time and space. If I quit buying magazines, think of all I could do with the money I save. No more mindlessly buying magazines, books or patterns. I need to be a better steward of what I have been given.

My "rule" is I need to like 3 projects, and be pretty confident that I will make them before I buy the magazine. So far I've done pretty good. My magazines are marked on the cover, and I'm "collecting" fabric for several projects. Like many of you, I have far more projects to do than time will allow!!
