If you want real accuracy, then PPing is the way to go IMHO!
If you want traditional piecing, then be sure to square up and measure up after every log addition.
Some of Eleanor Burns' patterns are terrific for explaining that, and giving you the measurements at every step/log

I have always cut to length and really tried to get every log sewn straight but always had some go off.
I bought the creative grid log cabin ruler and now every log is perfect and you don't have to cut the log fabric to size, you can use any size as long as it cover the log placement and it is cut on one side with a rotary cutter to get one straight edge.
I now enjoy making this pattern and it is perfect every time..
