I've never broken a knot, but if I did, I would take out some stitches and try again. After pulling the knot through, I was taught to take the thread in between the sandwich, come up about an inch over, go back inside a couple of threads from there, come up another inch over and clip the thread there. A little extra insurance.

Now, a question about breaking your knot. Are you doing a single knot, or a double? The double might be a little hard to pull through and isn't really necessary if you use the above proceedure.

I don't do knots. I started out as a cross stitcher and never used knots because it would wear the fabric. So I just backstitch and it seems to work for me

I was taught to do a secure stitch before burying, I just double the last line stitch then knot and bury. I'm also careful how hard I tug.

Thank you for sharing the methods you find helpful. I'll have to go back and try burying knots. (There aren't many and I probably would have a hard time finding them) I especially like the method of making a thread loop and catching the knot to pull it through although I have many crochet hooks; most likely have a few small ones. Thanks again. You are the best!

I assume you mean a knot as you are ending the length of thread? I don't knot there, only at the beginning. I learned to quilt from my mother and she took one backstitch in the last stitch and then ran the thread over into an unquilted area to leave thread in the batt before snipping it off. I've done a lot of hand quilting that way and have never had my quilting come out, even with regular use and laundering of any of these.

Burying knots is so satisfying. I know that I am nearing the end.

I do the same as Illinois, that's how I was taught, whether hand or machine quilting. I use an easy thread needle to bury the threads when machine quilting.

When I get to the end of the thread trying to be as frugal (tight) as possible, I learned from my grandmother to half way bury the needle in a couple zig zag moves like I'm going to do another stitch leaving the eye out and grabbing the thread with a needle threader. Pull it through like normal so you can then pull the needle out and the thread will be left buried.
