I bought a red transfer pencil (lines too light) and a black pen that you use to trace the pattern and then put the pattern on your fabric and iron to transfer the pattern lines (lines too thick).

So far I am having the best luck with a pencil, although I haven't tried it on anything other than white fabric. I bought a shadow box picture frame and use that as my mini light table.

I use a light pencil and don't transfer the entire design, I do the gist of it, and then when I embroider I have the paper page sitting beside me so that I can stitch from sight. I prefer it that way.
