So I got this idea to make my son a Christmas present, yes I think this far in advance, and got the block basically made on the computer (it's nice having a scanner)

I know in the pic the little side pieces aren't centered or the same size, but the real ones will be. My question is should I sew the printed pieces together and then topstitch black fabric on, or should I treat the black like another quilt piece? I have a set of those bias makers and really, the black that will show will be the same size, a half inch. The center golf print piece will be 6" square showing and the print is smaller in scale.

Sorry about that, I don't know what happened to the pic, but you get the idea

I think if I was doing this project, I would sew the black as if it were it's own piece. If you want 1/2" showing than use 1" strips of black.

I'm making a quilt for my DGS with black strips. I made them 1 inch cut and wish I had made them wider, as they look so thin at 1/2 inch finished.

I would quilt the black with the rest of the blocks. It will give it a "smoother" look. well at least to me. Depending on how large you make the other blocks you want to make the black accordingly.

I agree, just figure out how wide you would like the black to be and add 1/2 inch.

I usually do those type of sashings as quilt pieces.
