I finally finished wrapping my fabric on foam core boards - and it has taken me MONTHS - but it was worth the effort - much better than storing it flat. The scraps I have in drawers will be the next thing I organize. Some of them have not been seen in YEARS! Get the picture? You may not be like me, but drawers are for things like thread, bias tape, scissors etc NOT fabric!

EDIT: I drape sheets over them to avoid fading - learned the hard way.

I have my fabric in drawers but I stand it on edge as if it were on a shelf. That way I can see every piece when I open the drawer. I also found I could get twice as much fabric in a drawer by standing on edge.

I use both...I have plastic drawers from walmart that stack...have folded all of my less than a yard pieces of calico, sorted by color and then put on edge in the drawers. Larger pieces are all folded on mini bolts and on shelves. Collections like Christmas, Halloween, all have their own boxes... whatever works for you is the key, it can be overwhelming to begin, but there is a great deal of satisfaction when you are done.

forget drawer you will lose the fabric or have to dig for it. shelves and layer it. from experience found fabric I had forgotten about as it was on the bottom never really look there.

I wanted to have a piece I could use again and again so I bought a chrome wire storage shelf unit with wheels from Costco. If I ever quit sewing the shelf can go to the garage or pantry for storage there.
One gal I know has one in her kitchen and it looks great.

I can easily find my fabric and get two rows on a shelf, front and back. As it moves so easily I just swing it out to check the other side for fabric.

I now have three of these shelves and my husband bought one for his shop. No construction.

When I'm having a bad back day I can't sort plastic tubs with fabric or open heavy drawers.

I vote for shelves too. I have been collecting pictures of sewing/craft rooms. I just looked back through them and only see one photo of fabric stored in drawer and I think they are small cuts (maybe FQ), all stacked facing up cardfile fashion. ditto to what Laurie said...I'd hate drawers. Give me shelves!!!

I bought these from Lowes.. I store my 1930's fabs in one and the other two hold fqs.. I use bookcases and my walk in closet for storing yardage..

here are some pics of my fabric I just wrapped on comic book boards and I love the way they look. As you can see, I ran out of boards halfway, I had 100 boards and thought that was plenty. I had no idea how much fabric I really had. I keep going into my room to look at them, they look so pretty. I got the bookshelves at Ikea, and they are perfect
