I just tell them I would like for them to use the quilt when I give it to them and hope that they do.

What about a take on an old Depression saying - Use it up, wear it out but don't do without.

I always give them with a card asking the recipient to use it not store it. Play on it, sit on it, lay under it with or without your pets, make a fort or a tent out of it, use it for a picnic blanket or to hide under when the rain comes and interrupts the picnic. Above all, use it to make memories and when it has been loved to pieces I will make them another one.
