Question on what a quilt is worth in a non quilters eyes..

in my world the 60"x80" would cost $250
the 80"x100" would cost $400
that is a basic...base price for those sizes- if i did extra hand work- applique or other special time consuming technique more would be added...but the base- the prices start there- and go up. :thumbup:

They went to walmart and looked over the fabric there and decided right now is not the time it was to expensive. So now when someone asks me to make them a quilt I send them shopping. It has helped a lot to open the non quilters eyes to at least some of the cost.

The one thing that we tend to do is sell ourselves short thinking we are charging too much. It is our time, our labor, mind you we love to do it, but I have learned the lesson the hard way. Someone else mentioned sending them shopping which is great idea..or save your receipts and show them what the fabric and batting costs then remind them of the many hours we spend doing it. that sometimes helps open peoples eyes!

Once upon a time, when I was attending a church that wanted to put in a new stained glass window, a group of us got together, designed and created a queen-sized quilt to raffle off. We made sure to log in ALL of our time ... it took this little "committee" over 780 hours of actual time to sew, layer, baste, quilt, and bind it. That did NOT include the amount of time we met to discuss design, to shop for fabrics, wash material, or to create "kits" for the blocks. With this knowledge, we were prepared to advise people who bought raffle tickets exactly how much went in to this quilt.
I have always used that as my benchmark whenever someone asks me about prices for a handmade quilt: it takes roughly 750+ hours of time, PLUS materials, PLUS creativity to make a queen-sized quilt. Can someone else do it faster? Sure. But remember that when you pay for something. If you are willing to put out the money for a QUALITY product, you will always be happy with the end result.

I made a small quilt for my neighbor who is 73 and still mourning her dog for the past 5 yrs. She wanted one with dogs on it to lay on her couch. So we shopped for fabric she chose I bought, but it had to be no more than 100.00.
So I was going to do something nice and offered to print a picture on fabric of her fav pic. 1 mind you she got a little carried away , in the end I did 6 and put them all in the quilt. I usually do pics for 25.00 a piece. so last time I offer to do an extra. But I chalked it up she is a good neighbor.
