I have seen these Quilt Halo gadgets that are suppose to help with free motion quilting and was wondering if they are helpful. I usually use gloves to help me handle the fabric, but this looks like it may offer very good control.

What do you think?

I have one after testing sewing with it at the Paducah quilt show. Sharon Schamber was demoing it. She used two Halos together for precise control. One works for me. It helps when doing smaller detailed shape quilting. She said she put handles on it but the handles got in the way so had them removed. It's a heavy rubberized ring that grips the fabric and easy to move and to hold on to. I use it more to make perfect curves by quilting inside the ring edge. I don't use it for most of my quilting but when I need it, I'm glad I have it.

I have one. I like it. I sometimes use gloves. But when I am using the halo, I love being glove-free. When I pick threads off, I have to take my gloves off. When I scratch my nose, I have to take my gloves off, etc etc...

The halo is not great for small projects. You need to have room all around the edge of your piece in order for the halo to sit on. If you quilt close to the edge, you will find that your halo will grip/stick to your sewing surface.

I blogged about it the first time I used it here.

I am in the "love the halo" group.

My machine quilting greatly improved once I started using the halo. The gloves never really did much for me.

I am not really sure what about the halo does it -- I don't know if it forces me to concentrate on one area and then move on, pick the right speed, doesn't stress my hands. I just don't know, but it works for me.

I have let others try mine out and a few of them found the gloves worked better for them. It really is a tool that if possible try before buying.
