I am so sorry for you. I am also a widow, been a little over 5 years for me. I put Don's shirts aside and am only now able to think about doing something with them. Don't rush yourself. Be patient it is a long process. I am going to make Bonnie Hunters Smoky Mountain Stars out of mine.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers. Whatever shirts you don't want to cut up, may I suggest that you donate them to your local veterans services office? They are always in need to help homeless and struggling veterans with decent clothing. Like several have mentioned, put them away for a little while and grieve first. Then select the shirts that mean the most to you to make into a memory quilt(s).

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my husband in 2005 and wish I would have thought of doing this with my husbands shirt.

I am so sorry for your loss. I made a hawaaian shirt quilt with Sunshine for a Cause pattern...by Howard Marcus by Moda. It was beautiful. So I decided to make the same quilt made out of my husbands hawaiian shirts for each of our five kids to have as mementos.
I even embroidered buttons on all the shirts and got custom made labels for the shirts.

Wow! There are some beautiful quilt suggestions. Here's one more. I used my Step-Dad's jeans and shirts to make this for my Step-Sister. I lost the finished picture, but this is in progress. It's the Denim Stars pattern that's done quilt-as-you-go.

Whatever you make is sure to be a family treasure.

So sorry for your lost 🙏🏻 and time for you to adjust to your new normal.
I like QuiltingNan’s idea, Bonnie Hunter is a good resource too. You will be surprised how much fabric is in a shirt or tie. I also agree just cut around seams don’t rip.
An easy and great looking pattern is Triple Barn Star by Amy Gibson. You would just need to add a background fabric.

So sorry for your loss. I have seen many wonderful quilts made from men’s shirts. It will be a labor of love. There are several great u-tube videos on deconstructing men’s shirts to remove the seams, collars, cuffs, etc that you might find helpful when you get ready to start. Just google them. I am sure your family will treasure them.
