Ok so my sons Star Wars quilt is ever changing. I've never done a lot of quilting on my quilts, mostly stitch in the ditch.i had a professional do one but I decided I just needed to try free motion quilting so I could improve.
So I did some stitch in the ditch to help stabilize then did free motion quilting over tissue paper with my designs. Now I'm looking at it thinking "needs more quilting!" It's not perfect but it looks cool. I just didn't have a plan for more and it's for Christmas. Long story LONGER!
Since I did stich in the ditch and some free motion quilting all over, if I quilt my borders can I bind and quilt more later so I can give it to him for Christmas ? Should I wash it after binding or wait until I've quilted more?

I​ have gone back and added more quilting to an already bound quilt. I would not wash it though before adding more quilting as it will move the layers some.

I agree with Tartan. I am hand quilting a grid on a hand embroidered quilt right now. I first stitched in the ditch by machine to stabilize everything and did a wavy line quilting in the border, then bound it. It makes it so much nicer to handle without all the batting at the edges.

I have added quilting to finished tops.....these were bought at great clearance prices, quilting was sparse, so I put up on l/a and added more...so can't see why not on a d/m too

I also have added quilting to a 'finished' quilt---no problems.

Awesome! It seemed logical to me but I'm a total newbie so I figured I'd check and see the consensus!

I've even put a quilt back onto the long arm and added a little quilting.

Sometimes I notice something that I "missed" and I will put it back on my longarm and quilt it.

I also had an older quilt that I had batiked. This was before I knew anything about the actual "quilting" process of making a quilt. I had only stitched around my characters on the quilt. Several years later, I saw how distorted it had become from numerous washings and lack of quilting. I put it on my longarm and quilted the entire quilt. It looks so much better now and is also stable. So the answer to your question is, yes, you can add quilting after the binding has been applied.
