    Hey Mary,

Which shops are closing in Western Mass. I live in Ma as well, and was just curious which ones were closing so I didn't make the trip. My guild enjoys going on road trips. I live in Central Ma.

Yes, I just got the email about Valley Fabrics
Knew about Quabbin because they vended at our guild meetings a couple of times.
Didn't know about Calico. Been to Textile, never to Southampton. Will have to go there.

Have you been to Marden's in Sanford Maine. GREAT place.

If you're in Massachusetts, then you might already know that when Wal-Mart decided to stop carrying fabric in most of their stores, that was the death blow for VIP fabrics, as far as doing the printing in their Massachusetts plant. I was fortunate enough to get a tour of their plant last summer, and was so sad to hear the news that they will only be printing overseas after next month. They had a wonderful crew of people there, some of whom I had the privilege of meeting.

The good news is that their VIP and Quilting Treasures lines are still available, and should be the same quality as always... just... not printed here anymore.

P.S. the tour was absolutely fascinating!

Wow, I am from Greenfield and have only been to a couple of the shops listed. I am writing down all the ones still open so when I visit this fall I can shop. Thanks!

26 yards? Sorry, I may have missed something. Do you have a store?

That depends on if you're asking me or DH

Nancy, I'm sad to hear the news about VIP Fabrics - sad, but not surprised. Doing business with WM has done that to companies.

We had 1 close in our area and it is sad to see. I can say that I spend less then half of what I was spending a month last year...and, I don't see any sympathy from our fabric people...the prices just keep going up around us here. Now, I am espec buying only what is necessary. Even the 'sales' aren't good sales...Skeat

Many quilt shops in Jersey have closed in the past few years. My nearest shops are about an hour away either north or south of me. Joanne's is about 1/2 hour away but I usually use my coupons for threads, notions, etc. there. There is a Walmart 1/2 hour away but they have limited fabrics.

This is one of the reasons I bring a written list with me when I got to Lancaster PA for the quilt show in March. I try to stock up on basics, wide backings and fabrics for new projects while there. I get top quality fabrics at great prices and we hit almost every shop in the area, and a few on the way home too. From time to time I've ordered on line but really like to see and feel fabrics before I purchase them. What's missing at Joanne's, Walmart and online is the advice you can get at your local quilt shops.

With our quilting addiction we'll always find a way to buy more fabric, LOL! May in Jersey
