I am a saver. Give tiny scraps to a woman that makes cat/dog beds for shelters.

I'm so happy to read that so many of you are saving and using your scraps! I do love scrap quilts. I love getting gifts of scraps, so if you are a tosser, perhaps you can find a sewing friend who would love to have them instead.

I'm a saver as long as it's a large enough piece so that I can cut it into a 21/2 inch strip of some length since that is my preferred way to save my scraps.

I save most scraps and have places/people to give them to if I don't need them myself.

Most of the timeI save the scraps that are 2 1/2 inches or larger. The others are thrown away.

I save the fabric (love to use for applique on my embroidery machine) and the batting. I use the batting strips in quilt sandwiches for testing out new free motion designs and a bit of a warm up before I start on a quilt. They often have a bit of stickiness left and since the sandwiches are small I just add a couple of pins for good measure.

I have found out that St. Vinnies takes rags. They can sell them by the pound, so they get all my raggy clothes and quilt trimmings that are really unusable. I gave them all the left overs from jeans that had been cut up into squares for quilts: the seams and waistbands. I, too, have a liner in my waste basket and only such scraps go in there. The quilting scraps that I throw away are mostly "lint".

We had a lady in our quilt guild make a challenge out of her scraps. She put scraps from a project in zip lock bags. Wrapped them up, we each picked one and had to make at least one 12 1/2” square to return to put all together for a donation quilt. Out of my package I have two 12 1/2 “ squares eight 6 1/2” squares. With the rest I added slashing and backing and made two 30” squares baby quilts. Lots of fun using someone else’s fabric.
