I would start off doing just the cross hatch quilting in the body of your quilt. Once you get that complete, see what you think. It will tell you if you need to do the outlining.

    Gorgeous quilt and lovely quilting.

I would definitely outline your applique and then do the cross hatch. You will have a defined line of where to start and stop.

Because you have already put so much work into this quilt with all the appliqué (my opinion only-not experience) I think you should quilt around the appliqué. It makes it stand out so much better. By just stopping at the end of the crosshatching, it will look like that area was “missed”. (1” gaps everywhere).

As I said, you have already put so much work into the quilt, you should not skimp on the quilting. This will be a fabulous heirloom when you have finished it.

I do just the opposite. I quilt right over the applique pieces. If I want the applique to stand out I do trapunto. Your quilt is very pretty anyway you decide to quilt it.

Your cross hatching really does make it "pop". Lovely!

Imho, I would not quilt over the applique. I think they would look better quilting around them, not over them.

When looking at the picture close up I wee the lines are already there to cross hatch, where to start and stop on each applique. It will be smashing no matter what you choose.
