Is quilting a hobby or an art?

I think it can be both. For me it is a hobby. But I think one reason fabric and quilting notions are so expensive is because quilting is considered by the marketers as art supplies. Many times you can go to office supply stores and get the same thing for much less. In fact, I've gone to Art stores and bought fabric marking pens cheaper than at the quilt stores. So why hike the price when the words quilt or sewing are attached to it.

Yes, it's art. How much time is spent at something before it is considered a hobby? I paint and sew, and have many other interests. I don't know if I'm passionate enough about any of them to considered them a favored hobby. Especially when I read how all consumming hobbies are for some. I wish I was more passionate about something. I think I have the middle age "blues" ...
Quilting is definitely art, and I think it's great you are going to school to learn more about fiber arts!

I consider it both. I make traditional quilts that I do not consider art, but I also make artsy quilts that could be considered art. Many of the quilts on this board would be considered "fine art," as they are of excellent workmanship and the color, form is awesome. I too plan to take some college art classes to improve my color choices and skills this coming spring. Yahoo, a coed again and this time for fun!

Art is art, whether you paint, sculpt, or quilt. Painting does not have to be your "profession" in order for you to be an artist. The world is full of artists who paint and hold down a full-time job in a profession other than painting, just to pay the bills. Think how boring our world would be without the canvases created by those artists who earn a living doing something besides painting! Quilting can be viewed in the same vein. The act of pursuing your chosen art can also be therapy and it can become an obsession. So my vote is that quilting is an artform.
