I used to use an old fashion metal luncheon tray with a piece of warm and natural glued to it, and a small roll of W&M covered with muslin stitched to one side for needles.
I don't sew by hand in the car any more, but I've fallen in love with the silicone baking sheets, everything seems to stick to them, so if I were making anew one I'd try one of those for the base material.

Just saw a friend get inexpensive lap tray, kind of like people would use in bed. It had compartments on either side. She was going to use it when doing handwork in recliner. Wonder if that would work?

Thanks; Kalama Quilts and FWLover for ideas. I was thinking about covering foam board with fabric, but now I will be gone to the picnic basket for one of my lunch trays, I like the idea of having compartments and a silicon. Maybe I can glue a pin cushion in one compartment or maybe at should be a magnet. Much to think about. Thanks ladies
