quilts with panels
#22
I used panels on this quilt surrounded by pieced blocks and after the ladies at our church quilted it, it sold at auction for $95. The center panel design was copied and used as the quilting design in the corner white blocks, the rest of the quilting was feathers and outline around the motifs. it was hand-quilted and finished at about 62" square.

I love to use panels, especially for baby and kids quilts. If I'm in a hurry, I just add borders, but I prefer to jazz them up. Two of the LQS near me make darling quilts and wallhangings from panels and they are a great inspiration. Susan Teegarden Dissmore has two great books with wonderful ideas for using panels: Clever Quilts (Making the Most of Panels, Borders, and Theme Prints) and Clever Quilts Encore. I've made a couple of quilts using her patterns and plan to do more. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures-I was in such a hurry to get the quilts in the mail that I didn't think of photographing them until it was too late :).

The Northcott web site also has many free patterns using panels. Our LQS sponsored Patti Carrey the Canadian Northcott educator and she had numerous quilts in her trunk show using panels. Many of them were absolutely beautiful so go ahead and use panels. Most of her quilt tops can be finished in 10-12 hours which is great for quick quilts or last minute gifts.

I used to have a lot of pillow panels in my old business. It was so much fun to use them up with traditional blocks attached. I also used a site that I used Wilmington Print quilt that I made for the relay for life quilt. Sorry they are all sideways

I just used my first one to make a wall hanging. As you can see its not quilted yet;still in pinning stage. I don't see any reason to not use them short of it took me forever to figure what to do on the outside of the panel. I just made a filmstrip to go along the sides but would love a mini logcabin or star.
