quilter. tena

I have made a LOT of the denim quilts. No backing, Just 10" lengths sewn together in strips & strips sewn in rows.

I have charged $100.00 for king size, down to $25.00 for twin size. And that is if they furnish the levis!!!!! I figure that I am paying for the repairs on MY machine, using MY thread, as well as denim needles ( & they ain't cheap). If some one orders a quilt/tarp, I charge accordingly, as people give me old levis all the time.

I have donated them to our volunteer Fire District for auction, and have yet to have one go for less than $125.00. Once the people here use them, they want MORE MORE & STILL MORE!!!!!!

Good luck with your pricing.

Don't forget the electricity. The machine, and the light. I know it sounds like padding the payroll, but if you were doing this for a living, it would figure in.

I'm repeating what I said in a previous thread called "Please help me with pricing"

In addition to all the great suggestions
& funny things - as usual, instigated by Omak and Butterflywing

- this discussion is interesting, and it's why I make quilts for family and as gifts - weddings and baby. I like being paid with thank yous and compliments.

But I recognize that it's an expensive addiction, and some quilters need to earn money to support the addiction!

As far as I'm concerned, people who DON'T quilt don't realize that a lot more time is involved that the sewing time for putting blocks together and doing the quilting. They always ask 'How long did it take you to MAKE that?' I never know how to answer. I KNOW that they're thinking of the sewing and quilting, not the planning.

Sure, we could keep track of the time spent sewing, but we spend HOURS looking at patterns, looking at books, designing, petting fabrics in stores, deciding which fabrics to use from our beloved stash. Sure it's fun, but if you're running a business, all of that is part of the business, and it should be included in the cost of running the business. Is this true? Yes!!!! Am I dreaming? Probably. There ARE some very successful people in this business, but I don't think any of them are paid enough!

Moi?????
Surely you jest! :-)
(I sort of thought it was my job)
It takes me about 48 hours to make a 54" x 72" quilt ... I never thought about how long it takes to do the quilting and the binding! <slaps forehead in consternation!>

Heck, it took me 3 hours to iron and load 3 yards of 108" backing fabric onto the quilting frame just last night. I still need to load the top and batting and then quilt it. No stress, I have until Saturday to quilt and bind it. :-o
