Default Restoring or patching older quilt - resources needed

    Hello Everyone,
(Admin - if this should be somewhere else, please move).

I was approached by a friend today who is a fellow quilter - an acquaintance of hers has an older quilt that needs restoration/repairs..... more than my friend is willing/interested in doing....
I myself do not have time, and I doubt I possess the expertise either to be honest to tackle this...

Apparently there is leftover fabric to match, some of the fabrics are poly-cotton.... and I haven't personally seen the quilt to know how much work is needed....There is a big sentimental value to the quilt to the current owner.

I know about the various options (make it smaller, add appliques, make a framed work from the best parts etc), but the family wants this quilt repaired as close to original as possible.

So - Is there anyone in SouthWest Ontario Canada who can do this? Is there anyone anyone here knows? I would appreciate any/all help. Thank you in advance!

I cannot help unless I may have some stash that resembles the fabric needed to do the repairs. Will they give you pictures of the fabrics needed to post in here? I don't mind sending fabrics to repair the old, nostalgic family heirloom. Even if I am mailing to Canada.

Good luck finding someone that can help in western Canada!

With this type of request, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ask to see the item before giving a Yes answer.

ElaineCovid ... Probably the best suggestion, would be to advise the quilt owner to inquire via a local guild and/or LQS for someone capable of doing what they want done. There are some who love taking on this sort of project and do excellent work. While the quilt may have huge sentimentality, the owner(s) may not be prepared for what it may cost to have someone do the work. So they need to make sure they know what they are committing to. Best to let them do their own direct contacts, discussions and the ultimate decision as to what is right for them.

Some words of caution ... they want to make sure they have seen the work and/or received excellent referrals and fully understand what and how the work will be done and the costs involved. In the hands of the wrong person or through misunderstandings, all too easily their special sentimental quilt could be easily ruined, and what should be a joyful recovery could turn into heartbreak.

I'm here in SW Ontario and only wish I could give you a specific contact. Good Luck!

In our area, a "quilt appraiser," would know how to restore the quilt and may even be willing to do the work. Or they may know someone who is able. So try to find a a "quilt appraiser" in your area.

Check out "Loose Ends Project Finishers" on Facebook, they may be able to help.

ETA - they are volunteers, and will not charge you.

My wife and I have seven quilts constructed by our grandmothers for us when we were young. All but one were stored safely and remains as when gifted. Now with mixed emotions, we have one that we used for a number of years and has suffered fraying on parts of the perimeter binding. Because we used it, it is the one that retains the greatest sentimental value.

At 78, we have four grandchildren and two great-grands and are thinking it is probably best to soon pass these to the grands and greats but would like to have the one repaired.

We live in Nebraska. I noticed in the response the suggestion of contacting a local "guild" for guidance. Are there any or other repair services located in our area or possibly Kansas or Iowa.

I will take the suggested photos and post.

ElaineCovid ... Just wondering, were you able to find anyone
to help your friend's friend with her quilt?
And how the process has gone?

It sure has been a perfect winter, for staying home and quilting
... or for someone to be doing the repair work!
